 Please, Please, Please!! Don't bother referencing a story from an online paper that has to make you register before you can read it.
I would rather skip the story completly than have to go jump through thier "hoops".

There are some of us that don't mind registering for free.

There are also some of us that are already registered with the site in question.

So just skip the story. That's what I do. If I click on a link that asks me to register, I usually just close out the window. Some people don't mind registering to read a particular story, so there's no reason they should miss out on the links just because you don't want to see it.

My sentiments exactly.

From what I've seen at other websites I read, it's getting harder and harder to do that. Many, many online news sources are requiring registrations these days. As cstephens said, if you don't want to register to read it, you don't have to, but as CP said, I'm already registered at a couple of the bigger news sites so I'd rather have the option to read these articles myself and I'm glad to have the links.

There's no obligation to register to read a story just because someone links it! And sometimes it's hard to tell if registration is required to make a note of that on the link. I know I've thought a link was "free" or it was free when I linked it to friends but the article's status changed later. It's not always the linker's fault! Websites change their restrictions over time.

As one of those that provides news articles for MousePlanet, one of my sources is Google News. If I have a choice of multiple links for a news story, such as an AP article, I try to provide the link that is first, the full story, many papers do not list the entire article, but an edited version. If I have a choice of multiple links, I try an offer one that does not require registration.

Alas, the three major newspapers that are located in Anaheim and Orlando do require registration. (The Tribune Company for both the LA Times and the Orlando Sentinel (one registration works for both papers), and the Orange County Register.)

As the folks mentioned above, I provide a "QuikQuote", which is the maximum amount I can directly quote due to copyright and fair use issues. Feel free to click on the link, and if it requires registration, then the choice is yours......

Actually, that's a bit of a disservice to those hard-working folks like Darkbeer who provide links.

What might work, however, is a short note in the post, like "Subscription required" or something so you know not to go if you don't want to register.

That said, Adrienne is right; it's getting more and more difficult to find newspaper sites that don't require any registration. Most of them are free to register, and it's really only fair when you use their resources for free. If you don't want to register, then don't read. :)
