What ever happened to implementing avatars on the board? I'm fairly new to MP (compared to some of the old timers) and have noticed that at one point, there were avatars, correct? I assumed this because some of the older users have avatars that show up in their profile but not on any posts.
Is this an issue where somebody abused what could be used as an avatar, or is it related to the speed issue everyone's griping about from the vBulletin upgrade? Also, when perhaps would we see a re-introduction to avatars to the board?

Duh, I should have thought of that!

BTW, for any lurkers out there wanting an instantaneous answer, zapppop's old post on this thread should set the record straight:
Avatars were enabled when MousePad opened April 24, 2001. By early 2002, MousePad was running really slow and we were told it's due to lack of bandwidth. On March 5, 2002, avatars were disabled indefinitely. Since then, the staff has gone on to say that a new version of VBulletin is in development and when it's released, avatars will be enabled again, but possibly for a small fee. This topic does come up frequently which is why the staff can be a bit annoyed when asked about this topic. Although we don't know just when, eventually, avatars will return.
Serves me right for not searching first. Lazy me. :D

Bill, your link comes up 404 (well, not technically a 404, but it says there are no matches).

Hmmm... It was a link to search results. It seems the new software uses search IDs instead of search parameters in the URL and the links go dead after a while.
To further elaborate, although we have now switched to the aforementioned version of vB, we have decided to put Avatars and some other new features on hold until we move to a new server. This new vB upgrade requires more system memory than we expected, which is part of the system slowdown that some users have reported since we upgraded.
Although we know that there is interest in having Avatars reenabled ASAP, we thought it would be silly to enable something that would create a greater strain on the system.
I can't tell you when we will move to a new server because at this moment we don't even know. Let's say we're working on it, and you'll all know as soon as we're ready to announce it.

Mod: This board needs to be taken to a new server!
User: What is it?
Mod: It's a big, metal case with lots of blinking lights, but that's not important right now.
User: My gosh! Surely you can't be serious.
Mod: I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.
