Ok, so I am trying to access a DVD drive (which has a DVD-R filled with important info in it) from a computer on my network. They are both connected to the same router, and neither is running ANY sort of firewall at all. The only firewall is in the router, but that is to the net, and I can't disable it anyway. Yet, when I go to the Network Places window and click on the Drive (which is shared), I get an error that says I do not have the proper network permissions. So I try to ping the IP of the computer. I get an error that says "Error Code 65". According to the MS KB, this is a firewall blocking the request. The XP firewalls are off on both computers, as is ICS. What is wrong with these damn computers?

And please, no "Well, Macs/Linux would solve this....". I would love a Mac, but I don't have the $$$$, and my Dad won't let me switch to Linux.

Is that the only shared drive giving you trouble? Can you access other shared drives?

All shared drives are giving me trouble. I can't even ping the computer.

It sounds like it's the router firewall. I'm pretty sure that it monitors all traffic on the network, not just internet traffic. Have you checked the configuration of the router? You could also try just temporarily replacing it with a hub to rule out the possibility of it being the router.

I thought it was the router too, so I called up their tech support. The tech guy said that The firewall has no Configuration settings for the entire network, only for each computer to accept connections from outside the network. I don't have a hub here, and used up all my allowence on a recent school trip, so I can't buy one. I tried setting up a DMZ also, but it will only set one up for one client at a time.

I just tried pinging and accessing another computer on the network. I got the same error. I've never had this happen before. What could be wrong?

Ok, I figured out the problem. It completly baffled me, but apparently the Registry could not load a hive. By replacing the hive with the one from my XP cd, I was able to fix it. Sure, all user accounts and software information was lost, but the important files are there, and I can access the other comps on the network.
