View Full Version : Upcoming vBulletin Software Upgrade Sunday, March 21 2004
Notice:
MousePad will be unavailable for part of the day on Sunday, March 21, 2004 while we upgrade to the new version of the vB software.
This upgrade will take place starting at 1:00 pm Pacific time on Sunday, and ending as soon as Tony can get everything up and running again.
This is all subject to change if vB delays the software release (again).
Thanks for your patience,
AVP
Gemini Cricket 03-18-2004, 08:14 PM Does this upgrade mean we have to re-register?
Does this keep the threads we have already made?
What's vB? Is it like VD?
Mark Goldhaber 03-18-2004, 08:20 PM In the words of the Guardian of Forever, "All will be as it was."
(And vB is vBulletin, our discussion board software. Look down at the bottom of the page....)

I see it: vBulletin 2.3.3.
Now I get it. I thought it had to do with MB or GB stuff. You know, Mega, giga what's its.
So this new version is vBulletin 3? Or 2.3.4? Or something altogether like Mac OS Panther or Jaguar...
Will it have avatars?

This will indeed be vBulletin 3. I believe that it's 3.0.0, actually.
And you'll have a wait a little bit longer for news on avatars. I'm pretty certain that it won't be too long of a wait. :D ;)
Gemini Cricket 03-18-2004, 08:33 PM How does vBulletin 3 differ from what we're seeing now?
mousketeer 03-18-2004, 08:33 PM Besides avatars, what other features are going to be enacted?

Besides avatars, what other features are going to be enacted? We have not made a final determination yet. And don't log in Sunday night expecting to see Avatars - we're not there yet.
I imagine the first incarnation of vB3.0 on MousePad will look pretty much like vB 2.x.x or whatever it is we're running this week. That's the beauty of vB - we can make it look *just* like it does now.
Once the basic package is stable, we'll start adding any new features we are going to implement. Again, we haven't decided which of those features are helpful / useful / needful here on MousePad.

DisneyFan25863 03-18-2004, 09:24 PM If anyone is interested, there is a demo board here (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/index.php) that uses 3.0.0
Of course, this is using the default skin, not the MP one.
I can't wait for the upgrades (and I'm sure the mods will like the nifty new mod panel :fez: )
Kevy Baby 03-18-2004, 09:31 PM Is this a democracy? Can we vote on which features we get? :D

Seriously, if you are familiar with vB 3.x.x and there is something you think MousePad can't live without, you can PM Tony. But honestly, we have been working with this system since JUNE of last year, and we've seen all of the bells and whistles. We've had a test pad version of the release candidates running for a while too, and Tony's been playing with that as well.
We know what the options are - we just have not made a final decision about which ones are coming to MousePad.

SzczerbiakManiac 03-19-2004, 11:39 AM Just for the sake of argument, if (I'm not asking for a commitment) avatars are allowed, do you know what the dimensional requirements will be? Some of us might want to have something prepared....

Hypothetically? I haven't decided.
We are still playing with a lot of different options, posibilities, capabilities, etc. Final decisions probably won't be made until we are forced to - i.e., the changes happen. Start watching Sunday evening - we'll definately have a better idea by then.

....Yeah, like any of us will pay for something you get for free on every other message board that has them.
OK, we're back! Please use this thread to report any bugs or to ask questions about the new system.
I'll answer the one I know is coming - no, the Avatars are not back yet. Stay posted for more info later.
Edited to add - the boards will be pretty slow for another few hours, as the Search system re-indexes the database. During this time, the Search function will not be available.

justagrrl 03-21-2004, 05:45 PM Oooh... it's the same. Only different. :)
DisneyFan25863 03-21-2004, 07:29 PM Hmm....I don't really like it. Are you guys still working on a new theme? The buttons are in a little bit of a strange configuration, as is the new WYSISYG post editor.
PS: Am I supposed to edit my geek smilie to fit the new theme?
JeffG 03-21-2004, 07:34 PM On the old version, there was a "home" button on the "There are no newer threads" page that was given when navigating through with the "next thread" links. With that, you could easily navigate back to the Mousepad home page to choose the next section with new messages. That seems to be gone with this version. As far as I can tell, there is now no place to go from that page unless you click the "back" button on your browser, making it much less convenient.

Look at the top bar, above the User CP link. If you click on MousePad, it will take you to the forum home.
DisneyFan25863 03-21-2004, 07:44 PM Tony-
Could you also put a link to the MousePad home page on the bottom of each page, as you had with the old MousePad?

The top bar is missing on the page I was talking about.

Ghoulish Delight 03-21-2004, 08:14 PM Tony-
Could you also put a link to the MousePad home page on the bottom of each page, as you had with the old MousePad?There is. Above the brownish bar with "User CP", there is a tree list of which thread or forum you're in. So if you look up there right now you'll see "MousePad > Community Center > Administration > Upcoming vBulletin Software Upgrade (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?p=367955#post367955)" If you click on "MousePad," it will bring you to the home page.

Yes, but there also used to be a link at the bottom of each page to the MousePad home page, which was extreamly useful for lazy people like me who don't want to scroll back up to the top ;)
David R 03-21-2004, 08:43 PM How do I disable that box that pops up with the first few lines of the thread whenever I rest my mouse anywhere on the board?
It's rather annoying and it gets in the way. If I want to read a thread, I'll click on it.
I would also like to be able to make the font smaller. It looks huge now.
