I'm sure this has been talked about in threads have since
been deleted, but has anyone tried spitting broadband
modem costs with their neighbors on Wi-Fi?

I guess this could work especially well in apartment complexes!!

Well, a few years ago, our entire street (I live on a street with like 15 houses) tried to create a street wide B network. We would all pay for our own equipment, and then at one house, have one of those Dual WAN routers hooked up to 2 cable modems (We figured if we each paid 10 Bucks a month, we could do it). We had a bunch of ideas of what we could do with it in the future (VoIP, Data servers, email, etc). Sadly, we found out that all the ISP's in our area prohibited us from spreading it beyond one household. But it would have been cool :fez:

I didn't say anything about getting Mommy's(read: Cable Co.'s) permission!! :~D

But yeah, I'm sure they have rules about that. I would think though; with Wi-Fi they'd have a heck of a time finding out about it.

They have ways. You can actually be procected under Federal Law, I believe, for doing that. Besides, unless you have a really strong antenna and like no walls between the rooms needing Net access, its gonna be hard to get a good connection.

Actually, I wouldn't think they can find out if you're sharing with your neighbor through wireless. Since it would go through a router, the isp would only see the router's ip, not the subnet
below it.

The 801g wireless routers are pretty good through walls. The only time you can have problems is if you put it in a corner. Even if that's your case, you can buy wireless repeaters.
