Since the mod didn't answer your question, I will.

Avatars were enabled when MousePad opened April 24, 2001. By early 2002, MousePad was running really slow and we were told it's due to lack of bandwidth. On March 5, 2002, avatars were disabled indefinitely. Since then, the staff has gone on to say that a new version of VBulletin is in development and when it's released, avatars will be enabled again, but possibly for a small fee. This topic does come up frequently which is why the staff can be a bit annoyed when asked about this topic. Although we don't know just when, eventually, avatars will return.

Didn't we have someone who self-appointed themselves to answer the Avatar question whenever it came up? Did their term expire? Maybe we need to hold an election - any candidates?

Zapp, I understand your frustrations, but Age was just trying to be helpful.

I just want to say that I've changed my answers since the last survey was done. I would now pay a small fee to have use of some special message board stuff.

I can't believe it's been almost 2 years since the no avatars thing. Have I really been coming here that long? :eek: So...many...lost...hours... ;)

Heck, I would too if we could get the use of avatars and some expanded smilies! :D

I must admit I've never really liked avatars. I think they make the threads look to cluttered. However, I would like to have an avatar on my profile, just like it has been done for pre-2002 padders.

Actually, vB2 even allows that, so hopefully that feature won't go away in the next version.

I will state, though, that I fervently hope that the staff won't consider reactivating avatars unless they are really sure that the bandwidth problems have been resolved. This is still frequently a really slow site even without avatars and I'd hate to see it get any slower.

This concern is one reason why we have not reenabled Avatars yet, despite the changes we have already made to ease the bandwidth burden. Although we understand that many people would like the Avatars back, we far prefer to have a useable message board.
