View Full Version : Star Trek Themed Rollercoaster to open in 2004
CoasterMatt 01-16-2004, 06:17 AM This gets my vote for funniest name EVER...
Paramount's Carowinds is opening a Vekoma flying rollercoaster in 2004, and they're calling it "The BORG Assimilator".
Formerly located at Paramount's Great America, where it was known as "Stealth", Borg Assimilator is the first Star Trek themed coaster.

I still don't see how they count it as 8 inversions...
hersheythecat 03-21-2004, 01:43 PM Went to the park today on its second day of being open for the season and the Borg seems pretty impressive although not what I thought it would be. It did not seem as fast as I thought and you are not in the flying on your stomach pose as much as I though you would be. You spend alot of the time on the back. The theming of the ride is pretty cool with a Borg Sphere in water that you go around.

No one ever has, in any of its incarnations. For what it's worth, it looks like they count each half-flip as an "inversion", though I don't know why.

The Carowinds Press Release (http://www.carowinds.com/corpinfo_press12.jsp) claims 8 inversions.
Brian Noble 03-22-2004, 06:24 AM I know what you mean. If you look at the rcdb entry, it counts the "lie-to-flys" and "fly-to-lies" as "elements", which Paramount (and SFA/TPSTBFKASFWOA) must all count as "inversions". I've always assumed inversions were 360', not 180', but what do I know? I don't market coasters.
I would like to see a Star Trek based section of a theme park. My idea would be to feature the Borg Coaster, Borg 4-D from Vegas, a interactive shooting gallery ala MIB or Buzz, Quark's Bar restaraunt/gift shop promenade also from Vegas, and an indoor coaster similar to space mountain but trek themed, a few flats with a space theme, that would be pretty cool. I'm sure with all of Star Trek's current troubles with sinking popularity, a new Trek themed mini-park would be a cheap license to get.

Well, since Paramount owns the Star Trek franchise and owns a theme park(s?) as well, they're not going to license the theme park rights to another company, so it would have to be done at a Paramount-owned park, in which case licensing rights are a moot point as long as they stay away from specific actor likenesses.
I see your point, but Star Trek is part of the Las Vegas Hilton and the two trek attraction featured there have/are featuring cast members from the show, so obviously the franchise can be licensed out. Similar to how the Looney Tunes characters are featured under the SF parks, along with SpongeBob Squarepants, Scooby Doo, depending on the park. Or Cedar Fair and their license of Snoopy and the Peanuts gang.
