Ok, it happened. After a virus destroyed all of my dad's work (and the backups on CDR didn't work), my Dad has given me permission to buy a mac. The only restriction? It has to be under $1500, and it has to be an iMac (he likes the look). So I was figuring on getting the 15' iMac barebones with Final Cut Express for $1599, then adding on 256 MB of RAM from Crucial for an additional 40 bucks (I have $150 in Birthday/Holiday Money saved up). Do you Mac diehards out there think that this is a OK setup? Or should I wait for the new iMac G5 thats rumored for the Summer?

Also, does anyone know if I qualify for an educational discount? It seems from their webpage that only staff of K-12 schools qualify, not students (even though most of the stuff I do on it will be for school).

Thanks all!

EDIT: But, the G5 is tempting...
Look, I used five smilies. I gotta start cutting back.

Not really, been using them in school with our video club for 1 1/2 years. It's kinda a weird thing....you get, like, a "Happy" feeling when using them compared to Windows, like nothing is ever going to go wrong....:fez: :geek:

Edited to adress your edit:

Yeah, I was thinkin bout the G5, too. If I can get that stupid educational discount down, I might be able to get the single 1.6 GHz one.....

*A tear actually rolled down my cheek*;)

That's exactly how it feels. I just never knew how to put the wonderful feeling into words.:geek: :fez:

ahhh, it's threads like these that are just so fun to read, aren't they?

It's hard for me to talk because we have a G3 iMac and I have an iBook already, so waiting for G5's this summer just isn't that hard for us to do, but that's our current plan. Of course, we're looking at an iMac a little out of your price range (must have SuperDrive. Doc would love to talk me into 20" monitor, but we'll see how my first and second quarter sales go, first.)

Congratulations, DF. This is truly a beautiful moment for you. Are you going to start wearing black mock turtlenecks, too? ;)

Go for broke and get a 512 MB RAM chip. 512 total is okay but 768 will be a lot more comfortable with Mac OS X, especially since there are only a couple of RAM slots. I have 832 MB and still pageout from time to time!

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the "consumer" machines like the iMac but if a "professional" machine is absolutely out of the question, I think you've chosen a solid configuration.

All hail Steve! :D

Yeah. I was thinking if I wait until summer, I might be able to save enough money to go to a G5 17' Widescreen. A SuperDrive would be nice, also (although, I could also probably just use a DVD-R drive thats on a different computer, right?).

Don't know bout the turtlenecks. Maybe I'll wear one when we go into the store to buy one :D

Oh, and Uncle Dick, I'll go with the 768 MB. Thanks for the tip.
