Pout! :(

I got "Uru" for Christmas. This is the the fourth sequel in the "Myst" interative computer game series. I was sooo excited as this looks to be a beautiful, intriguing game.

Unfortunately, I must not have the right graphics card on my laptop or something -- it wouldnt let me play. THEN I installed in on our desktop computer, which DOES have the right graphics card -- but it still mysteriously quits before I even start!!

It's a shot in the dark, but does anyone else have "Uru"? Have you experienced these problems? I figure that people with the good sense to love Disneyland may also have a passion for the "Myst" games.

It's another 12 hours until I can call the help line and I'm about to explode!

Pout! Pout! Pout! :( :( :(

I have the original, and I never even finished it...I tried and tried, but I guess I didn't have the patience to keep going. I remember how addictive that game was...I have one friend who did it almost non-stop when it first came out and finished it in one weekend.

I hope you get a solution to your problem!

I would suggest going to the Ubisoft support page at this link: http://support.ubi.com/ then navigate to the information on Uru. You also might try doing a Google search using "Uru problems" or something similar.

I loved the Myst games, but haven't picked up Uru yet. I probably will eventually. Did you do Myst 3?

Yes, my sisters and I (with a little help from our dad!) have completed the 3 previous Myst games.

Now that I've wrenched myself out of bed, it's time to call the support line.

Thanks Mousepadders!

Are you sure you have enough RAM and such?

***Sigh***

I found the problem. I don't have a fancy enough graphics card. So in addition to the $50 game, I'll now have to buy a $150 graphics card in order to actually play it.

Such is life....

I'm guessing if you don't have the 32MB Graphics Card it requires, you probably don't have the 256 MB RAM or the 800 MHz processer either. Unless, of course, you are using intergrated graphics...

It is always possible, particularly if he has been upgrading his system part by part. The graphics card was the last component that I got to in my most recent round of system upgrades, which meant that I had a 2GHz P4 system with 512MB of RAM and an 8MB graphics card for a while. I very rarely play games, so the graphics card just wasn't a priority. I only finally upgraded it after I purchased a digital camcorder and wanted to start doing some video editing.

JeffG, other than the fact that I'm a "she," you're right about my problem. I have enough RAM and a fast enough processor. It's just the stupid graphics card. I'm not a big "shoot-em-up" video game player, but I do enjoy the Myst games -- so I've never before had the need for an upgrade.

We'll see if I'm up to investing $150 in a new Nvidia card!

Snitcherus-
My sis works at Cyan (they're located here in Spokane) and has picked up the Uru boxed set for me. I've just upgraded to DSL and am getting a new computer, and so I will finally be able to play this great game she's been taunting me about for the last five months..... Back in the early nineties, Robin Miller and his family used to get their hair done at my shop, and Robin would go on and on about this great game concept they were developing, which to me sounded kind of boring. Of course, when I finally got around to playing it I became a total addict. I can't wait to get going on Uru; and if I get hopelessly stuck, I can whine to my sis for a bailout!:D

That is neat-o Wendybeth! I once corresponded by email with Rand Miller. I felt so special! I think I was about 13 years old at the time, and all I could think of was to ask him questions about the game! Once a dork, always a dork. :)

Good luck with Uru -- I am so jealous. Incidentally, I find the "Myst" chatboards and hintboards almost as addicting as Mousepad. So go there when you get stuck, but beware of the Myst siren song!

Ooo, and one more thing. You can explore D'ni online, as an extension to Uru. They're giving free previews for the next couple of months -- how cool will that be -- just walk around D'ni and explore! I was granted admission, but my predicament prevents me from participating. I hope you are granted admission -- you'll have to tell me all about it! PM me sometime.

Have you ever found yourself looking at something like a spigot, or a gauge, etc, and had a Myst flashback? My sister says there is actually a name for that; I forget what they call it, but apparently it's quite common with Myst enthusiasts. I remember I was in a drive-thru at Arbys and I saw a valve with a lever on it- I wanted to turn it to see what happened in the worst way..My sister said that's the sign of a true addict:geek: . She says Rand is very nice; I have only met Robin and his family, but very cool people- very down to earth. I remember Robin had to have an emergency 'do' for a Gap shoot- we all laughed our derrier's off at him, because he was as un-Gap as you get.
Btw, the Cyan building looks like something out of one of the Ages, and the elevators have D'nai markings , etc.

It's nice to see a Myst game done by Cyan Worlds again. While Exile was okay, it's whole story line seemed kinda forced, and the fact that the ages had no real secrets, or past, just "teaching ages" was kindof lame.

Now that I know that Uru has 2 parts, and Offline, and Online part, I'm thinking more about picking it up. :)

I definitely have Myst flashbacks, that's funny you mention it Wendybeth. At Arby's of all places! And I would love to see that Cyan building, it sounds awesome.

As for my flashback -- At my university there is a a freight elevator that takes you to an underground mailroom. The elevator ceiling is so high and the walls are totally covered with metallic silver panels...everytime I walk into it I get that excited "what buttons can I push and where can I go!" Myst feeling. I'd love to know the name for the Myst flashback -- cause whoever I walk into the elevator with always thinks I'm a total freak because I inevitably start hopping around and giggling.

Monorailman, I definitely agree with you about Exile. My favorite part about the whole game was that cute "squee" creature that looked like a cross between a squirrel and I don't know what. Whereas, in Myst my favorite parts about the game were how cool the solutions to the puzzles were (the Redwood tree puzzle was sheer genius on the creators' parts!). I hope Uru lives up to that standard.

I thought Exile was okay, but I still love the first one the best. The second was cool, but it got kind of annoying having to switch cd's every few minutes. The Redwood entrance to Channelwood was definitely brilliant, although I was really irritated for the longest time until I accidently figured it out... My sister warned me not to lower the scope too much on number two, so of course I did, and opened the crevasse. Btw, on my way to work, there is an industrial area with a building that looks just like the boiler in Riven- actually, the whole area looks like parts of Riven, now that I think about it... You never know, it's only about three miles from Cyan. I'll ask her about the term for Myst flashbacking- she has been practically living at work during the lauch, so it may take a bit to track her down..:|

Yeah the switching CDs in Riven was annoying...Interestingly Uru contains only one CD. I wonder how they got it down to only one. Another question for your sister when she has a minute!

Snitcherus-
My sister says the data is compressed (and every bit of space is utilised on that disc!) is unpacked to your system and then decompressed. She has forgotten the flashback term, but says they all get it there! (She is going to check with the historian).
