William Randolph Hearst called his estate at San Simeon "La Cuesta Encantada" -- the enchanted hill -- and there is little doubt that the Hearst Castle is the single most famous landmark on the Central California coast.
It was evacuated Monday after a big earthquake rocked the region -- but apparently the main Casa Grande and its sumptuous outbuildings survived with no apparent structural damage, said Steve Capps, deputy director of the state Parks and Recreation Department.
That is good news to visitors to the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, which has been in state hands since 1958 and is the most popular state park in California.
