After reviewing the so-so reviews on kids CD's in today MousePlanet, I thought I'd ask you guys for suggestions. My 4th grader, just got a CD/walkman style player for her birthday. I bought her a Lizzie MacGuire CD and a kidzbop 1 CD. Haven't given her the kidsbop one yet - saving that one for Christmas. I'm thinking I'd like to get her another one though.
Do you guys have any suggestions? Obviously, it shouldn't have any cuss words or that sort of inappropriate stuff.

Our daughter is also in the 4th grade and is a huge Dixie Chicks fan. I'd recommend Fly. She also likes the Soundtrack to Disney's Annie TV Movie. lisap will probably post more as I'm blanking on other stuff at the moment.

Oooh ooh! An Annie CD is a great idea! They are singing several songs in chorus - and we rented the movie and she just loved it. Thanks. :)
And I'll check out the Dixie Chicks. I'm not much on country stuff myself... not sure how much they qualify as Country artists or what.

One of my all time favorite CDs is "Simply Mad About the Mouse".
A very fun compilation of Disney songs as sung by some of your favorite (and not so favorite) Early 90s artists.

This is a very fun CD. I highly recommend it. Brian's favorite song is the Clappy Song (also known as I've Got No Strings)

Courtney loves the Dixie Chicks as well. Her favorite CD though is the one with "Landslide" on it. I'm also NOT a fan of country music.....but I do know she also has the Wide Open Spaces. I purposely didn't buy the one with the Earl song, as I know that one was about killing an abusive spouse. Apparently, I can read about country music, I just can NOT listen to it, without wanting to hurt small animals.
She also loves Averil Lavigne and Michelle Branch. She has some Vanessa Carlton, too. We listen to the Annie Broadway version CD all the time. It's incredible. Another favorite is the Best of the Carpenters! I love that CD, and so does Courtney.
Another favorite of hers is a Canadian singer, Aselin Debison. That kid has a fantastic voice.......so gorgeous. Courtney is really into her.

Kat loves the Dixie Chicks as well! What is up with youngins these days?! :rolleyes: ;) (Being a Texan...I'm still holding a grude! ;) )
She also likes the new Hillary Duff CD...I have to admit it's not that bad either...
Avril Lavingne, The Soundtrack from Freaky Friday, all in heavy rotation...
She wants CD's for Christmas..but I too am stuck on what to buy...

I think Jump Five is a good alternative to "slutty girl pop." I might get some of their stuff for her to try.

Hilary Duff's "Metamorphosis" is quite good. My review of that one should run next week.

I'd suggest soundtracks from her favorite movies. Those usually have a good variety of music on them, and aren't offensive or anything. My personal favorites are Agent Cody Banks (one of these songs might need to be screened though-- sexual content), A Walk to Remember, You've Got Mail, and Uptown Girls. Yes, I'm a soundtrack junkie.
Hilary Duff. Although I've been subjected to ridicule because I bought her CD, I think it's safe to get it for a fourth grader. It has some dancy songs, some slow ones, a good mix. The lyrics might make you want to burst out laughing, though...
Oldies are good too. She might like Beach Boys.

Disney has some really good compilation cds of movie songs and such, and some that have "Disney" artists - guaranteed to have the beat people want without the content.
Also, you can't go wrong with Newsies. Those songs just make you wanna get up and dance!

I think the Kim Possible CD would be a good bet--even though Andrew was not overly gushing about it ;). My girls like that show and the title song is very fun anyway.

If we are talking oldies....I agree with disneychica, the Beach Boys are great for kids. Every song is pretty kid-friendly.

If you are gonna introduce them the greatest band of all time (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=music&field-keywords=the%20beatles&search-type=ss&bq=1/102-5152255-2265724), I'd recommend the compliation "The Beatles 1." However, you may want to have her listen to a few Beatles' radio songs or your own albums if you are unsure.
The soundtrack from the second version of "The Parent Trap" is great. The reggae version of "Groovin'" is worth the price of the cd alone.

We have the They Might Be Giants kids' CD called "No!" and it's really funny, if you like their kind of off-beat music. My son is almost 6 and he loves it.

Our kids also enjoy most of the "No!" album. They Might Be Giants have a new children's book out with four stories, included in the book is a CD with the stories as songs. I heard one of the songs on the National Public Radio program Fresh Air. It was ok, nothing great. If you develop a taste for the Giants from "No!" you or the kiddos might also like "Flood."

Katrina loves jump 5, disney mania, kim possible soundtrack,zoegirl (christian girl group)and plusone (christian boy group), and any of the radio disney jams.

Don't summarily dismiss classical. You can't go wrong with "Peter and the Wolf" or "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," and you can even get both on the same CD. There's also a "Classical Kids" series, with stories illustrated with classical music: titles like "Vivaldi's Ring of Mystery" and "Beethoven Lives Upstairs."
Then, there are some albums that feature arrangements of Disney tunes in the style of famous classical composers: "Heigh Ho Mozart" and "Bibbidi Bobbity Bach," for example, and similar ones, if I remember right, with well-known jazz musicians doing their own take on Disney melodies.

Depending on how old the kids are, I'd recommend the CD version of the Schoolhouse Rock songs. We gave that to a nephew of mine a few years ago, and he loved them, never having heard them before. So of course, the next year, we gave him the videos. :)
(Yes, this was before they were available on DVD.)

My mom got Bailey a CD player for himself! Now....I have to get CD's for him!
I'm good with buying CD's for Kat...she and I like the same stuff!
But I'm stinking at buying CD's for 8 year old, almost 9 year old Boys!!!!!
Suggestions please?
He likes Rap...but I dislike some of the lyrics!

Okay, I enjoy most of it as well. I don't like that perky crossing the street song, and the Edison Museum song is spooky, even to me. (But I know the words to both somehow:geek: )
My son also loves the Barenaked Ladies, so his tastes are pretty odd for a small kid!

A friend with an 8 year old son mentioned Uncle Kracker (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?cat=4118&dept=4104&product_id=1930539&path=0%3A4104%3A4118%3A5096%3A41408) as someone her son really likes. She got him the "clean" version.
