Very cool! Not announced yet, but Disney and the Daytona 500 / NASCAR are teaming up for some cool merchandise!

Here is the official PR stuff:

Kicking off Mickey Mouse’s 75th Anniversary in 2004, Disney Consumer Products and Daytona International Speedway are pleased to announce a special merchandise promotion combining the worldwide leader in family entertainment with the most prestigious motorsports event in the United States – The DAYTONA 500.

At the core of the merchandise program are a full line of collectible die-cast replicas celebrating this event. This product will support the fully integrated marketing platform that begins with the official world wide announcement from Times Square in December, 2003. From New York the marketing initiative continue with a “Road to Daytona” show car program giving the many fans across the country up close and personal access to Mickey and friends on their way to the Daytona 500.

The overall program will be supported with over $3.5 million in advertising and promotional activities consisting of on-track integration, print, television, radio, internet and sponsorship programs with VISA and Pontiac.

And here is where you can get it: (i hope this link works)

I don't think everything is on sale yet, but whatever, I already ordered my shirt!

Which begs the question, since Disney already has a race track on site in Walt Disney World, could this just be the start of something?

The link worked-thanks! Hmm. My guess is that they'll be announcing this at NASCAR week in NY next week. Interesting. I always thought that Disney has stayed out of NASCAR due to the inherent danger involved in the sport and the potential of negative publicity involved but I guess that pull of millions of fan dollars had management overcome their "scruples".

Should be interesting to see what these two can do together.

Nascar has a scheduling problem that grows with each new track. There is only one big show and only so many weekends in the season. Only by extending the season (and crew nerve endings) can they possibly cover every track that wants the show.

The Elite (west) and Grand National (east) units attempt to fill as did the Busch series at one time...but the crowds are not there for these lesser 'lights' and it costs BIG bucks to run a Super Speedway with out the crowds.

There was word that the Craftsman Trucks MIGHT be coming to Irwindale next season BUT they do not have the grandstands to handle the money needed for the show. The BIG Toyota National Championship show that ran a week ago there had the BEST drivers in both Elite and Grand National...and even the small capacity stands were NOT NEARLY full.

For the absolute best race of the year (anywhere!) head to Irwindale Thanksgiving Night for Turkey Night...Midgets and Sprints and the WORLD'S top racers (Tony Stewart etc.) and Indy Drivers etc. AWESOME SHOW on the country's BEST 1/2 mile paved short track! $30
