View Full Version : Managing solo with an infant [WDW]
Fantasyland_girl 11-10-2003, 08:33 PM Okay, my baby is almost 3 months old, and I live in the WDW area. I go to the parks occasionally while my husband is at work, just to walk around and stuff. But doing some stuff seems difficult to do with only one adult and an infant. As you can probably tell, I am very new to motherhood.
For example, I have taken the baby a couple times now, but I've never stayed more than a couple hours. I know that it would be too hard to ride the tram in the parking lots, since he is still in the car seat part of the stroller, and I can't fold up the stroller, carry the car seat and the diaper bag all alone. And I don't want to hold everyone else up. So I just hope for a not too far off parking spot.
But another thing I was thinking about was the restroom. I can't bring the stroller in with me, but should I just bring the car seat, and use the large stall so I can put the carrier on the floor? Does that make sense?
I just wanted to hear if there are any other parents out there who have gone to a park solo with a baby, and how they've managed everything! :D
KinLA 11-10-2003, 10:42 PM I'm a father of a 15 month old and I've had the same concerns in the recent past. Here are my thoughts: At DL (I've never been to WDW), cast members (or nice strangers) will assist with strollers onto the tram. The first and last cars of the tram accomodate strollers without folding, so you could leave your diaper bags and such there and just carry the baby in the car seat.
As far as restrooms, I'd look for a "unisex" restroom which should fit a stroller no problem. Again, they exist at DLR so I assume they exist at WDW.
adriennek 11-10-2003, 10:47 PM I've done the same thing with the DLR trams- there's always at least a CM on the back most tram, and often CMs in between in the waiting area, to crowd control. I have two kids plus the double stroller, usually.
I ask the CMs for help, IF they don't offer (usually they offer, but if they don't, no shame in asking for help!) Usually I put the diaper bag over my shoulder, fold up the stroller for the CM, put myself and the baby/kids on the tram, then the CM puts the stroller up for me.
If I'm on the back of the tram, the CM on the back can hop down when we stop and come get the stroller off the tram for me when we get to the park gate. I've never had to ask them to do this for me, though, they're always jumping off as I turn around to ask.
Sometimes it takes waiting for the next tram to do this all, but I always expect to be slower than normal when I'm alone.

adriennek 11-10-2003, 10:50 PM I forgot to add this part: Are you familiar with Baby Bjorns (http://www.babybjorn.com/mainframeset.data,en)?? They're marvelous baby carriers, the greatest on earth.
Now, I never used a stroller with a carseat attachment, so I don't have that experience, but I could handle both of the above mentioned chores (getting on the tram and using the restroom,) 500 times easier with a baby bjorn (assuming I couldn't get the stroller into a HUGE HCA stall.)
It's not a piece of cake to potty with a baby in the carrier, but it's doable if you need to.

miss_sonja 11-13-2003, 11:12 AM Adrienne mentioned Baby Bjorns, which are great. But with a sling, you can nurse discreetly, the baby can nap, and you can still go on rides (any of the boat rides, train, tram, monorail, etc).
We're going to DLR next month and the five month old will be in the sling most of the time.
Add a backpack diaper bag and you're good to go!
miss_sonja 11-13-2003, 11:48 AM This is my favourite sling--the designer is a really nice lady!

mckat 11-25-2003, 12:38 PM Sorry I didn't get to you sooner, I hope you are still checking your answers. I went to WDW with and 18mt old- so alittle different. Also we had two adults and two children- so that made a big difference too. However I think I would go if I was in your situation as well. I would use the handicap stalls in the bathrooms (that's where I always go with a stroller anyway). I would pick places I like to sit and people watch- e.g. mainstreet on the bench by Walts Statue, and I would take frequent sitting breaks and take the baby out and just watch (at that age they usually love the changing noises and sights- especially if they aren't to close to their faces). I would also pick some rides that I find fun, that baby would be ok on (small world, jungle cruise etc). Fastpass-Fastpass-Fastpass! Standing in line with a baby trapped in a stroller for long periods of time is never fun!
Basically, I think WDW with little kids means slowing down, watching more and doing less. I found it more peaceful and actually rejuvenating (great for a new Mom). I envy you your closeness.
PS- the lockers are cheep and right in the entrance and you can get in and out of them with a key all day. I used that for all that heavy "just in case" baby stuff and only took a couple of diapers and wipes in a small bag with me. Unload as much as you can!
PPS- Give yourself a break and ask the CMs for help like all the experienced Moms said. Asking for help when you need it is a key for surviving Motherhood!
