Is DDR compatable with DIMM RAM and what is the difference between PC2100 (266MHz) and PC2700 (333MHz) RAM and are they compatable with each other?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Thanks! MonorailMan 10-16-2003, 09:40 PM Ok, but here's the nittly gritty. There are basicly 2 types of RAM used today, both chip layouts are DIMM, so that's kinda irrelevant. DDR and SDRAM. DDR is faster, and is used in more higher end systems, and newer systems. SDRAM is the older type of RAM, and is also common in low end systems. RAM is very specific to the type of MotherBoard. However, most systems today are backwards compatable, such as a 333MHz system RAM type shoudl work with 266MHz, however, nothing is garenteed. If your going to by ram here's my recomendation for the best kind of ram. Head to www.crucial.com, and get to your specific system. There, on top of the pice should be the specific details, like the Mhz, and PC type. There, you can get the details, and then head out to Fry's or CompUSA, and pick out some cheaper ram of the same type. RAM can be confusing. If what you buy doesn't work, take it back and buy something else. ;) :D HB Tigger Fan 10-16-2003, 10:00 PM Thanks MM! Basically I am trying to figure out if I can use the RAM from my old computer (133MHz) SDRam with my new computer (266MHz DDR). I'll check Crucial. THanks! Sorry Bruce Bergman 10-21-2003, 05:16 PM Unfortunately, computer technology is going to take a leap every couple of years, so you can't plan on reusing components in newer computers for more than 2 or 3 years, things like memory and some peripheral boards like sound cards. Hard drives can be moved, but after a few years they're too small to mess with... :( Either the hardware requirements will change, or they'll re-write the OS and won't write new drivers for your "legacy equipment." I have one old machine I have to leave at Win98SE because there are no Turtle Beach Montego II sound card drivers available for WinXP/2000. Do what I'm planning on doing - move all the files on the old computer over to your newer machine (and archive them on CD-R or DVD-R media), wipe the hard drive, and now you have a fresh system to learn Linux on... (Insert Tux the Penguin smiley here) And when you add memory to a machine use as big as you can install on one DIMM (256K, 512K...) and as fast as the machine can use - that increases your odds a bit of it being reusable later. That way if you want to run a really memory-intensive program and need to bump the memory up again, you won't be pulling out a perfectly good 128K strip (that you can't reuse) to make room for another 512K board. They make "surfboard" adapters to put 2 or 4 small memory SIMMs or DIMMs in one motherboard memory slot, but they're a kludge. :fez: --<< Bruce >>-- |
