Our beloved LaserWriter 630 died last week. :crying: Considering it had a 5-year expected life span and lasted over 10 years, including printing several copies of someone's dissertation- and dissertations for others even, it lived a very very good life.
But now I'm lost without it!
We could get a networkable HP for $600 but for about $500 we could get a non-networkable laser printer and a printer server, which would save $100 but also possibly allow us to network our HP 930C ink jet printer. Plus I could get the server now and be able to use the ink jet networked NOW and save up to replace the laser printer later.
Here's the problem: DocKrock is reading two different stories online. One says printer servers are compatible with the HP930C. Others say they only work with Post Script driver printers (which the HP 930 C is not.)
Anyone with a Mac have experience with this???

I'm not familiar with the newer Mac OS (basically anything after 7.5.3), but can't you just do print sharing? The one computer that's hooked up to the printer runs print sharing. When you load the drivers on the networked computers you just tell them it's a networked printer and find the printer on the network. This should be a built-in capability.

the print servers shouldnt have any issue with PCL drivers. Word to the wise, if you get a print server, get a good one, get an HP Jet Direct, then you can print to an IP address, MAC or PC should be able to handle that.

well, Doc ordered a print server from MacConnection but it's on backorder of course... (Do I look like I want to pick up my ibook and walk into the office just to print one page? I know.... it's not that hard, I need to just do it and get my mailing OUT...) I'll let you know if it works when it ever gets here.

how many computers in the house? if you have a desktop thats running constantly, you can just attach it to that, instead of the print server option...

no, we can't. Our operating system doesn't allow USB printer sharing.

The data still has to go through the USB port, though. A converter wouldn't work.

I think with a converter, though, the device would show up as an LPT1: (or other number) port, so it should work fine.
Obviously it has to go through the USB port, but the converter makes the USB port look like an LPT: port to your computer.
