Okay, we're taking the plunge and getting a digital camera for our next trip in October/November. We're going to Spain, Italy, Phoenix & (of course) DL, so I figure it will get a good workout:)
So far, the Sony 5.0 one looks good (sorry, I am so not technically-minded:p ), but I have heard good things about a Canon one too (I forget the model). What does everyone recommend? Thanks:)

We have 2 Cannons - a C30 and a C50. We love them both and would recommend them to anyone.

Not Afraid, I think you have the S30 not the C30 (cause I have the S30 and have what you have).

Anyways I have the Cannon S30, bought mostly on the recommendation of Not Afraid and Cemeinke. I love it!

I have not seen the S30 around anymore but I do see the S40 and S50 around. The difference is the pixels and a few more options.

I highly recommend the S30 :)

P.S. Here (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13862&highlight=digital) is the link to the thread I started when I was looking into buying a digital camera :)

My husband and I just got a new digital camera. We were deciding between the Canon Elf and the Sony DSC-V1, and we ended up going with the Sony. It is 5.0 mega pixels, and the thing my husband liked was that you could take MPEG movies with it. With this feature, we figured we would never need a video camera since we would probably never watch what we videotaped anyway. But with this Sony camera, we can take short clips. Supposedly, depending on how large a memory stick you have, you can have a longer movie clip. It also has a 4 X optical zoom and lots of other features that we still have to learn.

Thanks for all the recommendations:) I just got a call from the bf, who informs me that he has just bought the latest, greatest, super-duper, etc, etc, Fuji camera (link attached)

he is very excited. I am (slightly) nervous, as I'm not sure I'll be able to drive it:p

Nevermind. It looks cool and we'll have pretty photos of DL:)

The newer Mavicas (the model I'm loyal to) have a 2x optical. What's the point?

Check to see if you can buy a larger memory card. Otherwise you'll spend time every night trying to download images to your laptop. 16mb isn't very big - I shoot with a 128mb memory stick, and I wish it were larger sometimes.

Be sure to buy / bring a card reader. I just picked up a spare at Fry's for $19.99, so they are really dropping the prices. (My first one was over $80 two years ago)

OOooohhhh, and it has a lens adapter ring... Pretty!!!!!!!!!

I bought a Kodak 4900 on eBay. I've never actually tried one, but it's 4 MPixels, and it takes Compact Flash (both are important, because I want near-film quality, and I don't own a single computer with a USB port, and CF is the only type of memory card I can be absolutely certain my two PCDOS-2000 notebooks can talk to through a PCMCIA adapter (having actually tried it with the card and adapter for the corporate videoprojector).

I won't know how the thing performs until sometime next month, but the reviews seem decent enough.

After reading the review on the-gadgeteer.com, I brought my wife the Sony DSC-U20 on her birthday. She enjoys it because it takes good pictures day and night.

It's a tiny 2 Meg pixel digital camera without zoom. The features are: close-up built-in flash, 15 seconds tiny mpeg without sound, 250+ 2 Meg pictures.

Most important of all, it runs on two AAA rechargeable batteries.

We took three set of AAA to the California State Fair last Saturday, and managed to take 300 beautiful pictures.

He bought a couple of memory cards with it, so hopefully that should be okay.

Hehe...I have *no*idea what these are...you guys all sound like experts compared with me:) We had a play with it last night and actually it's not so scary. It even takes video pictures which is kind of cool. Really looking froward to using it on holiday now:)

Hello:

I guess I spotted this thread a bit on the late side... However I just wanted to put in my vote for the camera I use:

The Minolta Dimage XT. The thing is a gem. It's smaller than a deck of cards, takes great photos (3 MegaPixels) has a 3x optical zoom, and doubles as a digital video camera with SOUND. It can also record sound bites to go with each picture...

It has a start time of about 1 sec. That's a feature I REALLY love. With two small kids you gotta be quick or you miss them smiling!

Steve.

Ps. If you would like a sample photo from our Niagara falls trip send me and email to photo.5.steve0@spamgourmet.com

I have lots of gadgets :D and I got the new digital video/digital still/mp3 player/audio recorder camera - the Panasonic SV-AV30 (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-DAYPayO9Z8V/ProdView.asp?a=&s=0&cc=01&g=10230&id=essential_info&i=133svav30). It's $400 (BestBuy.com) and is smaller than my GameBoy Advance SP. It has a lithium ion battery and can record for over 1.5 hours. I have a few 256mb SD cards that I use for this.

Pictures - Fine: 1924, Normal: 3850, Economy: 7703
MPEG4 - SuperFine: 41m, Fine: 1h25m, Normal: 2h35m, Economy: 5h53m
Voice - 17h14m

It will also record TV shows using the TV Cradle that also charges the battery. You can buy another battery.

It doesn't zoom, and the flash sometimes is too good (meaning the picture comes out mostly white). The sound on the video doesn't happen when I play it back on my iPaq 2215 unless I use the software (which is good.) BUT - it is very small, very cool, and takes good pictures/video. I've been able to watch whole movies at a time on this and am considering not taking my portable DVD player because of this.

Yes, the screen is small, but if you are going to take pictures of the kids/animals playing or embarassing moments, what would you pull out first: the bulky camera or the little one that fits in your pocket?
