View Full Version : PDA Download Recommendations
Dlandmom 07-20-2003, 08:04 AM I finally got my Handspring working again (Visor). I'm basically starting from scratch again and have lost everything I had on it before "the crash" (my fault...or rather my husband's fault for deleting a program file so I couldn't sync it properly...and then I must have put in some bad batteries and didn't realize they had died...therefore, I lost everything).
Anyhooo, what are the current downloads that y'all would recommend these days?
I know that Lani really liked Avant Go...is that still good? Anything else you'd recommend? I use my Handspring to manage my life...appointments, address book, reminders, jotting down notes and favorite things/places, keeping track of clients and their preferences/needs.... I never used it to its fullest potential, so I think I'm going to give it one more try before deciding if I want to replace it.
Thanks.
Dlandmom 07-20-2003, 09:05 AM By the way, what's the site that gives you lots of free downloads? I know it's been mentioned before, and I searched the MP database, but I couldn't find it. Thanks.
Dexter 07-20-2003, 09:16 AM I really like Avant Go because I could download driving directions directly to my Palm. Not that I've used it recently, but it was a nice to have.
Might want to check www.download.com for palm downloads or even the software forum on www.palm.com .
I don't use my handheld near enough any more but those are sites I used to use. Hope that helps!

I have 2 Visors. One is a deluxe and the other is a Prism. Actually you didn't really lose everything. Check in your C:\Program Files\Handspring\(your username)\Backup. You can double click on the prc files in there and put them back on your Visor. Also check in the C:\Program Files\Handspring\(your username)\Archive directory as well. Some files are there too. You might have to locate some apps again and reinstall them but for the most part, they are in the Backup or Archive directories. The PDB files are your data files for whatever program they are related to.
I also like AvantGo. I use it for my Yahoo content as well as the Restaurant Row Offline to search for restaurant close to where I am going to be or close to my home.
MonorailMan 07-20-2003, 10:15 AM I really like:
www.freewarepalm.com they have a lot of free Palm stuff. :)

Thanks, I'll check that, but I'm pretty sure we wiped out the files. We had a lot of problems with our computer a while back, so we pretty much cleaned out everything but vital info. Nothing I lost was all that critical, so I haven't spent too much time looking for it. I just downloaded the current stuff from Handspring.com and started all over.
I have a deluxe, by the way.

If you didn't delete the directory, you can recover the programs and data back to your visor.

Nope, all gone. Only the new stuff I've been working on today is there. Thanks so much for the help, though. It was worth a try!

When I used to use my Visor regularly (yes, past tense; I'll get to that in a minute), I used to download stuff from Palmgear.com.
I've replaced my Visor with my cell phone. My phone doesn't run Palm OS, but it has a calendar, and allows me to input people's addresses if I want (but more importantly, all the phone numbers).
I've given up on Visor (Handspring did)... if I get another PDA, it'll be a Sony Clie. Those things are elegant and built well.
JeffG 07-21-2003, 09:36 AM Lani's suggestion of palmgear.com is the place I go for most PDA downloads. They do emphasize commercial downloads over freeware, but they have pretty much everything in both categories.
I do use and like Avantgo, although the application tends to be a major memory hog. They just released a version for Palm OS5 which finally stores the data on a memory card (although I understand it is pretty slow), but they still haven't come up with something like that for the older (and more widely used) versions of the OS.
I did find a $10 shareware utility called "Avantage" that lets you store the Avantgo data and components on a memory card. It works well, but really slows down both synchronization and launching/exiting Avantgo. As a result, I don't use Avantgo as often as I might if it handled memory better on its own.
