View Full Version : Hey I used to have that!~~~
dsnylndmom 07-03-2003, 05:47 PM I know that we talked about toys in the 80's post a little but this one's focused on toys.
1. What toy(s) can you think of that you wanted sooooooo bad as a kid but never got?
2. What toys do you remember you used loooooooooveeee as a kid?
3. Do any of you kids(if ya got 'em)have any toys that were old favorites of yours?
Have fun!
:D
cemeinke 07-03-2003, 05:59 PM 1. The Major Matt Mason Space Station - A friend of mine had this and I was forver jealous
2. Legos - I had thousands of them, which I used to build the great cities of Middle Earth (Big Tolkien Geek as a kid) to inhabit with my "little men"
3. No kids, but the nieces still enjoyed the Lego's, they just didn't go all out to the extent I did.
Pirate 07-03-2003, 06:29 PM Love cemeinke's Major Matt Mason mention :D
Memorables:
Rock'em Sock'em Robots
Cool Schwinn stingrays/krates (Orange Krate; Apple Krate; Pea Picker; Lemon Peeler :) )
Creepy Crawler Thingmaker
Green Ghost (a board game)/+ the standard board games, Monop, Life, Operation, Sorry, Agravation, etc
GI Joes & all garb
Nowdays, my 8 year old girl's classic toys seem they will be our [board] games, bikes or her dolls (American Girl).
stinkerbell 07-03-2003, 06:36 PM Oooh, good one, Tina!
Okay,
1. I wanted one of those race car sets with the remote control little cars that go upside down and climb walls and all that. But being a GIRL and all, I just always got Holly Hobbie themed toys for pretty much every occasion. I also wanted a Krissy doll, but never got one. No, let me amend that. I got one, but it was my neighbor's and she'd already cut the hair off. Thanks. Oh, and I wanted a Barbie Dream House. But my mom said, "If you get one, you have to let your sister come in your room and play with it, too." I said, no thanks.
Oh, and I wanted a pale pink and grey Huffy bike, but my dad bought me a mountain bike instead. About five years before they were mainstream, so it was the fugliest bike on the block. And he spent $1200 on it! I was in 7th grade and completely mortified.
2. I loooooooooooved Shrinky Dinks and all my Colorform sets, esp. my Bert and Ernie set and my Holly Hobbie set. Yes, more Holly Hobbie. I had the Holly Hobbie kitchen set, the vanity, the doll that you pulled the ribbon from the side of head and the eyes closed or opened. I had Holly Hobbie make up and pretty much every Holly Hobbie toy made. I remember some tin toys--pots and pans maybe? Plus, thanks to our Avon lady neighbor, I had every single children's Avon product--from the plastic jewelry, to the lip gloss, to the smelly perfumes. I had them all!!!
3. The things my kids have that I had as a child-- Tinkertoys, Etch-a-Sketch, and Barbies. I wish they were more into their legos, but they aren't. I had a gameboy when I was a senior in high school, so it felt weird to buy one for Courtney when she was in first grade! But other than these, they have all the things I never had as a child! The gigantic barbie dream house, all sorts of Barbie cars, the race car set, they pretty much have had it all by now.
And my books!!! I saved all my Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume books. And I have boxes and boxes of Sweet Valley High and other books for when Courtney is a little older. And I have some of the classics that my parents purchased when I was born: Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, Little Women. I can't wait to share these with my kids. Courtney and I have already read Charlotte's Web and the Ramona books.
dsnylndmom 07-03-2003, 07:05 PM 1. I wanted a Green Machine soooooo bad, I had a big wheel but the green machines were so cool! I also wanted a Mongoose bike(I was such a tomboy)but mom said they were for boys so I got a ten speed(and hated it)
2. Like Stink, I had TONS of Holly Hobbie, including the bed set, wall paper etc! ;) I remember I loved:
my HOlly Hobbie easy bake oven
my shrinky dinks
colorforms
Legos
BARBIES!!! esp the Barbie house complete with working elevator(which translates to pulleys on the side that made it go up and down! ;) )
A disneyland playset that I kept for soooo long and wish I had it still now!!!(early 1970's)
My Barbie head that you could put make up on
My perfume making set(got that stuff stunk but I loved it)
My Evil Kenviel*sp* action figure that was on a motorcycle and you used a rip cord type thing to make him go!
My Bionic Woman doll!
board games(Mr. Mouth, Sorry, Aggravation, Operation, Perfection, before that Chutes and Ladders and Candyland)
my books(JUDY BLUME, Ramona, Sweet Valley High and the little house series!
Oh oh and Lincoln Logs, Slip n Slides, Skates and a Fidget(anyone remenber those?) Wizard hand held game(how about those)and INTELLEVISION! LOL
3. My kids have board games up the wazooo!(including Disney Monopoly, Disneyland MOnopoly, HM Clue and Disneyland Candyland) It's our favorite family thing!;)
They have both had Big Wheels, skateboards, Snowcone maker(though mine was Snoopy) Slip n Slides, Lincoln Logs, Lite Brite! and they have a Creepy Crawler thing and GI Joes(I didn't have those my brother did)
Oh and I can't forget my autographed Shaun Cassidy picture on my white night stand next to my Holly Hobbie lamp! (Or the Donny Osmond t-shirt!) LMAO:p
Pirate 07-03-2003, 07:55 PM Ah, thanx dsnylndmom, forgot about those Lite Brites, Lincoln Logs, Slip-N-Slides (& Water Wiggle).
Another 'boy' thing, but how about those toy forts, my era was plastic (post tin), they were made by Marx Toy Co & we're like Fort Apache, western forts, & others maybe medevil.
They were made for little army men sized figures.
:D
stinkerbell 07-03-2003, 08:22 PM We sold the girls' Lite Brite at a garage sale after realizing how hard it is to get the little pegs in the holes.....we even bought the girls some Disney themed paper sets. Eh, not as fun as I remembered...... :D Same with the Barbie head. I loved mine, but the girls could hardly be bothered with theirs. Hello, garage sale box.
I was saving the Green Machine mention for you, dsnylndmom! I knew that was your wish from the 80's thread......
I remember I got a stupid "loom" to make knitted Barbie clothes. Oh, the hours of fun I had listening to my mom tell me I was doing it all wrong!!! Looking back, I think she probably wanted a little doll-clothes loom thing when she was a kid and was forcing it on me......that and latch hook kits. I had latch hook kits coming out my nose. One for every holiday.
I always sort of coveted the Masters of the Universe toys and longed to play with my little sister's. I was too cool, of course, but oh man, how I longed for my little He-Man guy to stand atop Greyskull and shout, "I have the POWER!!!!!" :geek:
I had a Weeble McDonald's set even though I wasn't allowed to eat at McDonald's. We didn't really do the junk food thing. So I lived vicariously through my Weebles. "Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down!" I had a whole Weeble town, with a school, houses, a park with swings and a teeter-totter and with a mat with the streets and everything. My dad made it a cool permanent fixture in our basement. I have to say that it was the envy of the neighborhood. I carried my case of Matchbox cars with me EVERYWHERE!!!! But how I LONGED for that race track set with the remotes.
Oooooh, another toy I coveted??? Those guys with the stretchy arms. I can't remember what they're called (Stretch Armstrong?), but I thought they were tres cool when I was five. Until I saw one break open and saw all the jell-o-y goo that was inside.....ick.
And in related news: My husband's greatest sadness??? He didn't get the Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. I have been telling him for years that they actually SUCKED, but he didn't believe me. So last weekend we bought the Disney Princess Sno-Cone machine at the Disney Store (on sale for $4.49!!!) and he was tired of cranking out sno-cones after two days. :~D bwahahaha!!!!
Flubber 07-03-2003, 08:29 PM 1. I wanted a lite brite (lite brite, making things with light). Never got one, still tempted every Christmas to buy one for myself. I was playing with this Virtual Lite Brite (http://www.sfpg.com/animation/liteBrite.html) last week. It's not the same though.
Wanted trains too. Never got 'em but that has been corrected.
2. Sorry cemeinke, I had the Major Matt Mason Space Station. There was also some moon walker thing and a space suit for Major Matt that looked like a deep ocean dive suit. Sadly Matt and friends ended up being tossed with all of the wires in their arms and legs busted.
I also loved my vibrating table football game. That is until mom stepped in the middle of it. Poor dented field was never the same.
Had tons of GI Joe stuff too.
3. I have no kids but still have toys around. Etch A Sketch, Tinker Toys, trains, puzzles, password, Yahtzee. One of my nephews is big on the GI Joe stuff so I still see Joe quite a bit.
MonorailMan 07-03-2003, 08:42 PM Well, since this is the high-tech age, and I'm all about high tech, I don't think there's anything directly that my folks played with.
However, board games, like Monopoly, Scrabble, Risk, have been replaced with their computer counter-parts.
However, I am still fond of my game show board game collection (like WOF, Jeop!, Pyramid, Feud, and Card Sharks). There's just nothing like being your own emcee! :D

That's okay, I had the Lite Brite - So I guess there still is Karmic balance in the universe.
DivaPrincess 07-03-2003, 09:16 PM OOOOOHHH! I really wanted Cabbage Patch twins - my friend got them, but I got "Pumpkin" patch kids. My parents missed the boat. I also wanted the She-ra castle and all the My Little Ponies.
I loved my Barbies and my She-ra's and my Pumpkin patch kids. Oh, I did get a Cornsilk Cabbage Patch. And, two hand crocheted dolls from my Great Grandmother.
Chloe,3, plays with said Cabbage Patch kid, and I'm saving those dolls to give her and her sister, Piper, 11mo. They also really like barbies, but I didn't save any of my Barbies. I wish I would have.
Not Afraid 07-03-2003, 09:16 PM
I really only had toys made by Mattel, so whenever something really cool came along (like the Hasbro Mickey Gumball Machine) I didn't get it. But, being a Mattel child wasn't such a bad deal.
I wanted more Hot Wheels and Tracks. If I had had it my way, there would be orange track all over the house. Don't get me wrong, I had a load of track and a ton of cars, but it was never enough to fulfull my dream.
I still see Barbies everywhere, but all of the really cool toys are either gone or completely different (ie: Major Matt Mason)
dsnylndmom 07-03-2003, 09:26 PM I always sort of coveted the Masters of the Universe toys and longed to play with my little sister's. I was too cool, of course, but oh man, how I longed for my little He-Man guy to stand atop Greyskull and shout, "I have the POWER!!!!!"
LMAO I "had" to get my boys the He-man Castle for Christmas this past year when I saw it, it was such a time warp! I also got my Shawn the He-man Sword that lights up and says.................."I HAVE THE POWER"
So I lived vicariously through my Weebles. "Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down!" I had a whole Weeble town, with a school, houses, a park with swings and a teeter-totter and with a mat with the streets and everything.
Yup I had the weebles too, they were so much fun! Still love the song!
I really wanted Cabbage Patch twins - my friend got them, but I got "Pumpkin" patch kids. When I was 16 and on my last DL trip with parents I got a Cabbage Patch Kid from the Cabbage Patch Hospital(I think that's what it was called)somewhere near DL. My little sister got one, she was 5 I think so I wanted one too:p
Stinkerbell I have vague memories of having a loom thing too, but I KNOW I had the sewing cards, do you remember those? I had seseame street ones!! I was a HUGE Ernie fan!;)
dsnylndmom 07-03-2003, 09:28 PM OH OH OH what about Play-Doh???? I wanted the Play Doh Fuzzy Pumper(that's just wrong to name a kid's toy that! LOL)sooo bad and was so excited when I got it! I just, uh hmm the EASTER BUNNY ;) just got that for Shawn this past Easter!!!!

My brother and I had enough track to circle the globe 150 times (not really. obscure DLRR reference). Our track was taken away though because while track made terrific swords for spectacular fights it also made for handy clubs for brothers to whip up on and bruise eachother.
stinkerbell 07-03-2003, 09:52 PM I had Sesame St. sewing cards!!!! Or maybe my sister did.....I just remember we had them!
And I had the Mickey Head gumball machine....... I saw one at an antique store not long ago and almost had to have it...... :D
dsnylndmom 07-03-2003, 10:25 PM I have a picture of me getting a gumball machine, though it wasn't the Mickey head one and I have pigtails and I'm wearing a Donny Osmond shirt, ya know the kind made from Shirtque!!! LOL
Oh and I have another one of me opening my so cool tennis shoe roller skates(remember those, oh those Roller World days)and I'm wearing my red and white vans with rainbows on the side, those dorky running style shorts that are one leg red, one leg white and the opposite on the other side and a terry cloth head bad with my hair in a side ponytail! LMAO
I had to check out my photo albums after I started this thread! :geek:

Dolphin shorts!!!
You have to read "Getting Over Jack Wagner" by Elise Juska. I know I've mentioned it before..... It is SO good! A great description of 80's hair, clothes, and the music and boys we had crushes on.....a great read! I loved it!
In my house, it's all about "old school." I took my husband shopping last weekend and forced some old school Pumas on him. They are so cool. I love them! I want to buy him more! Cassidy wears old school Adidas and I have my girls trained to pick out old school Vans. The checkered slip ons.
All we need is a Panama Jack hat and I'm back in sixth grade......

No kids... I'm still in high school!
dsnylndmom 07-04-2003, 12:22 AM I took my husband shopping last weekend and forced some old school Pumas on him. They are so cool. I love them! I want to buy him more! Cassidy wears old school Adidas and I have my girls trained to pick out old school Vans. The checkered slip ons. :D :D :D :D :D OMG Stink I'm cracking up 'cause for my birthday my hubby got me Old School Addidas, SHELL TOES, with pink stripes! I wanted to get Puma's too but they didn't have my size!:D
http://www.journeys.com/shopping/prod_detail/main.asp?MainCatID=12&catID=137&sl=0&ProductID=2241&sku=435428&
stinkerbell 07-04-2003, 12:38 AM It's all about the shell toes! I have the baby blue ones, just like yours and Cassidy's!!! Now she wants old school Pumas like her daddy's. Personally, I want the pinkish suede Adidas old schools. There's also a pair of old school pink suede Converse I have my eye on too. Price just dropped to $40, on both, so I just need to make up my mind......
dsnylndmom 07-04-2003, 12:51 AM I saw Grey with Pink Nike Cortez's when I got mine, I had those same ones back when I was a kid! I considered those too but decided on the shell toes!:p
Morrigoon 07-04-2003, 12:55 AM 1. As a small kid, I always wanted one of those big honkin' metal Tonka trucks - the dump truck - you know the one I mean. Never got one. Now they make 'em out of plastic :(
2. Legos legos legos. We had this enormous rubbermaid bin, and all the lego set would get dumped in there - HUNDREDS of lego pieces.
3. No kids of my own yet, but as to what my kids will be playing with, see #2. And if my little girl wants a Tonka truck, by God, she's going to get it! :fez:
1. I wanted Creepy Crawlers. Flat-out the coolest toy in the universe.
2. Barbies - yes, we're talking about the really old-time ones that look like street walkers. For awhile there, I was convinced my real parents were Midge (Barbie's best friend) and Louis Armstrong - and I'm not African-American. Go figure.
3. My girls have my entire collection of Barbies, Midge, Scooter, Skipper, Francie, Stacey, and Twiggy. I say toys are for playing with!
