View Full Version : MM Help! More Technical Problems: My Laptop Won't Charge!
mousketeer 06-25-2003, 06:57 PM Oh my, I am now the newest padder to add to the myriad of technical problems. Now it's my "Compcrap" Laptop. I try to plug in my power cord to charge my battery, and nothing happens. I have to push the cord with all my might into the opening to get any charging registry - e.g. the green light lights up. What can I do.
Before I go any further, I'd like to say what a piece of crap my laptop is. Since I purchased it in 1999, I have had to replace my processor, RAM, CD-ROM, battery, cord, and screen hinges. Please, never purchase Compaq products. Before Mission:SPACE sponsorship changes from Compaq to Hewlett-Packard, I vowed never to ride. At least now I can have hope of lifting-off.

In case you didn't realize, the sponsorship changed only because HP and Compaq merged...

HB Tigger Fan 06-25-2003, 07:34 PM Did you try a different electrical outlet?
DisneyFan25863 06-25-2003, 07:41 PM Sounds like a power cord promblem to me......
Even if there is no battery in the Laptop, it should still be able to work when it is plugged into a outlet

No, No. It's an internal problem. I need an in-home technician!

How do you know? I would try it with another cord before determining that it's an internal promblem

And I would try a different outlet before determining it is a cord problem ;)
mousketeer 06-26-2003, 02:34 PM Sounds like a logical explanation. Thank you. And it definately is not the outlet.
MonorailMan 06-26-2003, 05:11 PM Are you getting a green light on the power "brick"? (The black box inbetween the two cords)
Also, where do you have to push it hard into? Is it into the computer, or into the "brick".
(I'm really grabbing at nothing. See, I just bought a Compaq laptop, (like $730 with tax), and I have a power cord with the "brick" inbetween it.)
If you could, give me the model #. I must do research. :)

Green light in brick, just not the computer.

Into the computer, not the brick (though the brick is sensitive, but works fine.)

Presario 1275

Presario 1275
have you tried removing the battery and then plugging it in (still keeping the battery out?)
Also, what OS are you running?
Try to find another P1275, plug it in with the same cord that you are using now, and see if it charges. If it does, swap that battery with the one in your 1275. See if it charges your laptops battery in the other Notebook. If it does, it is probably that somthing is wrong with the internal circutiry of your notebook, and you will need to bring that into a store where you can get it fixed. If it dosn't charge, it may be your battery. Try using a different, fully charged battery in it. If the computer turns on and such, then your battery is probably busted, and you will need to get a new one. (about $150-$200 new, $75 on e-bay)
MonorailMan 06-26-2003, 11:29 PM Ok, since you have to press it hard into the computer, we have one of 2 things:
1. The little side metal thing in the round male connector, is bent so the little side of the female connector won't rub up aginist each other. Just push it out. (Yea, you have fun with that one) Along this catagory, the pin could be bent. (Doubt)
2. Or the connector, attached to the Mother Board is loose. (easy sodder fix)
The unfortunate thing, is that you will have to open the Laptop to fix the problem. Or, you could try to wedge it against that side connector.
Idea: If it's #1, then take a like a dentist's pic, and see if you can get it in there, and move it closer to the pin.
Also, to give it a shot, I'd try another cord. There's also a possibilty that it can't get a good connection, so pushing, allows the cord to get that good connection.
DisneyFan25863 06-26-2003, 11:53 PM Please disregard my previous posts as I had not noticed you had said you have to push in really hard in order for the green light to register. I had misread it and thought that you said that you never ever even got a green light
I would take MM's advice, he can useally fix anything :fez:
Also, does the light kinda fade in and out, or does it do more of a flash on when you put the cord in? It might be the LED is dead (though I highly doubt that)
Wizard69 06-29-2003, 02:01 AM I have a Compaq laptop and only had 1 problem with it. It was the same problem as yours. I had to take it in and they said it was a motherboard problem. Since it was under warranty though they ended up giving me a better one (since it had been 1 1/2 years old and they said it would be more costly for them to fix it than to just give me a new one). The new one I have had NO PROBLEMS with. It's a Presario 1600XL. All in all Compaq laptops are good. Better than the desktops. I'll NEVER buy a Compaq desktop..

Ugh. I got a COmpaq from a friends, for free. She updraged her computer, and gave me her Compaq. I hate this machine. It's funky network card doesn't have drivers in 2000/XP. Now, because of a stupid incompatabilty, I have to have a Win98 computer on my (what use to be) all exclusive XP network!

Why don't you just buy a new network card? They generally cost around $20.

DisneyFan25863 06-29-2003, 09:57 AM I have this really stupid Compaq Desktop That I got as a gift when my grandma got a laptop. It was (WAS) a 2000 model with a 600 Mhz P3, a 13 GB HD, 64 MB, and a really funky Mobo that had NO PCI slots! It ran even worse. So I ended up stripping it of all useable parts and throwing it out. Worst computer I've ever used
