View Full Version : The pad is really slowwwwwing down
justagrrl 06-06-2003, 07:45 AM I've noticed that, lately, the message board is getting really bogged down. I've got a fast DSL connection and a computer with plenty of memory, and no problems on other sites.
When I click on a thread, I get the header info fairly quickly but it sometimes takes a good 10 seconds for the page to come up. ( I know - 10 whole seconds! ;) )
It wasn't always like that though - and I thought maybe pointing it out would prompt someone to look into it?
mousketeer 06-06-2003, 10:59 AM Same here, but on cable. I've noticed a lot more graphics lately. Every try wdwmagic.com - even with cable the message board takes forever - no wonder they're charging for bandwith.

RStar 06-06-2003, 03:07 PM It's that darn evil pop-up banner ad at the top I tell 'ya!
At least I finnaly got high speed cable yesterday so I can post from home now!!
YAAAA!!!!:D
zapppop 06-06-2003, 05:35 PM Great.
Maybe now they're going to disable smilies and font colors due to bandwidth

zapppop, if you'd have so much less to complain about and roll your eyes at if you left, please do so.
For everybody else: I have not experience any slowdown when accessing MousePad. Could others chime in if they have and try to give a sense of when they started noticing it.
MonorailMan 06-06-2003, 05:55 PM I never had any slowing. Maybe it's my 56K modem leaving you cable people in the dust. :p

It was a joke; and further more, even if I was serious, I'm not going to leave MousePad just because you don't like my opinion & prefer I shut up and be silent.
cemeinke 06-06-2003, 07:09 PM It must be the "What would your Avatar Look Like" thread
:fez:
EandCDad 06-06-2003, 07:10 PM I haven't noticed any slowdown.
Tony did some system maintenence this evening, to try to speed the server up a bit. I don't understand the technical details, but he said he "bounced" the server.
Apparently a bounced server is faster, because MousePad seems to be running just fine for me now.

JeffG 06-07-2003, 09:55 AM "Bouncing" a server generally means shutting it down and re-starting it. :)

Mark Goldhaber 06-07-2003, 08:16 PM Yep. Server goes down and comes right back up. ::bounce:: :)
Mark & JeffG are absolutely correct - It was simply rebooting the server. For those interested, we are running a RedHat Linux server, and in this instance, it had been up for over 120 consecutive days - let's see Windows do that!
Mark Goldhaber 06-08-2003, 08:20 PM That's about the longest we were able to let a Win2K server run without rebooting, but we usually bounce them about one every month or two.
Now, I HAVE heard a story of a Novell 3.12 server that was "lost" while still running at a university somewhere. They didn't worry about it, since it was always available and they could administer it remotely, but they didn't know where it was. Eventually, while doing renovations YEARS later, they found it sealed inside a wall, still running smoothly!
That's probably the most amazing server story I've heard. (Though it's been years, so I can't remember the source....)
stinkerbell 06-13-2003, 07:17 AM I had noticed the slow down.......old news, I know. Still a little slower than it was three weeks ago. But that might be due to my computer and not MP......;)
I have been doing some remote monitoring of the server and its performance, and I am not seeing a slow down at all in my metrics. You might want to check with your ISP - depending on how they route your traffic, they could have shifted your traffic to a slower route to our part of the Internet.
JeffG 06-13-2003, 09:52 AM I've actually seen a periodic slow-down recently as well, but it generally appears that the page loads occasionally stall right after loading the top header. Often, simply hitting "refresh" seems to resolve the issue. You might want to look into whether your ad provider is having some problems.

Not Afraid 06-13-2003, 09:57 AM I have experienced occastional slowing as well through both my connections. One is DSL the other is T1. It usually gets hung up on the ads, so I would suspect Jeff G is on the right track.
Bill Catherall 06-16-2003, 11:07 AM Jeff could be on to something. I've noticed that after the WBshop banner loads the page gets hung up and takes forever to finish loading. Also, it did the same thing with a Crayola store banner. It doesn't happen everytime a WBshop banner is displayed, but I haven't noticed it with any other banners (except the noted Crayola banner).
adriennek 06-26-2003, 10:53 AM I've noticed something: If I have more than one MousePad window open and I'm trying to load a page, it takes FOREVER. On occasions when my windows are layered so I can see the bottoms of multiple windows, the other pad windows have activity going on, even if I'm only trying to load something on the top window (Does that make any sense? I'm NOT a techie so I don't know WHAT I'm talking about, just what it looks like.)
When I close all the other pad windows, or change them to a non-MousePad webpage, the loading process speeds RIGHT back up again.
So if anyone else thinks the pad is super slow, maybe see if you have other windows with MousePad pages in them? I don't know why that would be the case but it's repeatedly been for me.
Adrienne
