View Full Version : Tokyo Disney Sea...not Seas Ralph Wiggum 08-15-2001, 12:04 AM Man I totally overlooked this and a bunch of other people have to. I thought it was seas but its not. Its singular. DOH!!! Baka Gaijin 08-15-2001, 01:38 AM And it's "DisneySea, not "Disney Sea". In Japan it's pronounced - "Dee-zu-nee-she". Lani 08-15-2001, 10:08 PM Originally posted by Baka Gaijin In Japan it's pronounced - "Dee-zu-nee-she". Nnnnn... actually I think it's probably closer to "Dji-zu-gnee-shee." There is no actual character for "DI" in Japan (it's written with a "DE" and small "I"), so while younger folks (and English speakers) can say it, not everybody can. The closest sound is a hard "DJI" sound. The "NEE" sound is also slightly different, in that the Japan may pronounce it by closing the back of their throat instead of using the tip of their tongue to the roof of their mouth (although with the combination of DJI they're more likely to pronounce the "NEE" part correctly). "SHEE" is also another one where the character "SEE" does not exist in Japanese. Of course you imagine how this makes the phrase "SIT DOWN" sound. ;) Baka Gaijin 08-16-2001, 12:19 AM I've been to the park (DisneySea) several times this month, so I've heard it said uncounted times. I think "Nnnn" (No) is too strong a reaction. I just wasn't going to get carried away explaining the prononciatin. "Dee-zu-nee-she" is more than close enough for what an American mind can comprehend. Lani 08-16-2001, 10:55 PM Sorry BG, it's the old Japanese liguistics grad student in me poking out!! :p TokyoInsider 08-16-2001, 11:33 PM Originally posted by Ralph Wiggum I thought it was seas but its not. Its singular. DOH!!! With any luck, and with adequate tons of cash, perhaps it WILL become plural in your part of the world. Wouldn't that be great! Seriously though (and very unfortunately), as is often said over here by both OLC and Disney people: "There has never been a park like Tokyo DisneySea ever built, and there will NEVER be a park like Tokyo DisneySea ever built again." That may be true- the only company in the world uniquely positioned in the marketplace to create such an expensive park AND most assuredly turn a profit is Oriental Land, and Oriental Land used up their last remaining parcel of land to build Tokyo DisneySea, Ikspiari (think Downtown Disney shopping and dining without the 'Disney'), and the Disney Ambassador Hotel. Disney has the talent to create DisneySea, but not the market (or so they believe) for a project of such scale in America. Perhaps Disney needs to re-evaluate their perception of the American market. [perhaps I am speaking too mildly] JRob2k1 08-17-2001, 12:05 AM Originally posted by TokyoInsider "There has never been a park like Tokyo DisneySea ever built, and there will NEVER be a park like Tokyo DisneySea ever built again." I so hope that that statment will prove to be false, but as far as I can see...It's going to be true for at least a while!!:( :( -JRob Mr D 08-19-2001, 03:17 PM As long as Michael Eisner is the CEO of Disney the possibility of a DisneySea theme park being built in the US is slim to none and parks similar to the liberty ship syle of DCA will only be built. I would not even be surprised if more of DL gets shut down because of the detrimental aspects that DCA does to DL. I wonder what Eisner is going to do with the $7.5 Billion he is drumming up right now with the sale of bonds? Maybe at this moment he is planning to start a Disney franchise of theme parks across the US just like McDonalds, or he is planning on buying another media group that would be my guess. Ralph Wiggum 08-19-2001, 03:52 PM How did this topic become nothing about the topic and all about DCA vs. TDS. AHHHHH!! It's a plague TokyoInsider 08-19-2001, 08:40 PM Originally posted by Ralph Wiggum How did this topic become nothing about the topic and all about DCA vs. TDS. AHHHHH!! It's a plague Ralph- Sorry- I accept responsibility for that one! I'll take my comments and head back to the 'Seas' where I came from ;) Ralph Wiggum 08-19-2001, 08:48 PM Oh...well since you did it Insider then I have no quarms about it. Your my favorite person for getting us all this information :) EandCDad 08-19-2001, 10:32 PM Originally posted by Ralph Wiggum How did this topic become nothing about the topic and all about DCA vs. TDS. AHHHHH!! It's a plague Where exactly did you expect this thread to go Ralph?;) I mean Lani and Baka could only go so far on the pronuciation discussion. Generally all threads on this board turn into either DCA vs. TDS or NPFC vs. PRNP. Mr D 08-20-2001, 06:02 AM Well you know what really happened just before DCA and TDS was built? Somebody got the park plans mixed up and DCA was to have been originally built in Japan and DisneySea in Anaheim :D just kidding |
