View Full Version : Poll Request!
MonorailMan 05-25-2003, 12:03 AM I'd like a poll in the Disneyland Resort forum.
Title/Question: Will the Submarine Voyage return?
Option #1: Yes, they will be back.
Option #2: No, there staying cooped up!
Option #3: Only because Al says so. ;)
Matterhorn Fan 05-25-2003, 07:44 AM What would be wrong with a regular thread on this topic?
MonorailMan 05-25-2003, 08:42 AM Well, the cool little clickable radio buttons, are well, cool. (Spoken like a true teenager.)
Anyhow, it's easier to see the results, and more people are likly to click their opionion, becsue they don't have to do any typing. ;)
DisneyFan25863 05-25-2003, 09:30 AM I second the motion :fez:
MonorailMan -- We suggest you go with Matterhorn Fan's suggestion of just asking this question in the Disneyland forum in the form of a regular thread. I don't think such a poll is appropriate.
disneyscott 05-26-2003, 12:41 PM I have wanted a poll thread for a long time. I like when you can see what everyone things from a graph then reading 4 pages of text. As the polls are set up you can still type your point of view if you wish.
[RANT] I have to go on a rant here and I have cleared out my PM mail so the mods can fill it up but everytime anyone sugest thing about this site you get a quick NO. I feel that its like going to the Disney city hall and giving them a complaint, you get someone that is smilling to you tell you that they will look into it when in reality you just want us to go away
This isn't our Pad this is yours, your the bosses and most of us try to resepect you, but come on now Lani post a poll in the lounge for all thing of where should we meet. And only gives two choices... Talk about somthing that didn't need a poll but better discussion. Why was that poll appropriate?
Now If you started a poll to see if the rest of us wanted a Poll thread and there was no responce then we could let it die, but if you saw that alot of us would like a Poll thread it might allow a nice change.
I for one like MonorailMan's question and feel that it a fair question.
[rant over]
I'm am now in my bunker wateing the bomb to begin.
Alex S. 05-26-2003, 02:04 PM Thank you, disneyscott, :) , for your input. We'll look into it.

I'm thinking there are going to be many more "no" answers than "yes" answers because many of the things that people would want that would get a yes answer from the powers-that-are have already been implemented.

Sure, it's a fair question. And it got a fair answer. The answer just happened to be no.
OK, I think it's only fair for me to explain why I said no to MonorailMan. MM -- your poll has potential, but not in the way it was asked. If the question were rephrased to ask, "In your opinion, do you think Disneyland will return the Submarine Voyage ride?" or "In your opinion, do you think Disneyland should return the Submarine Voyage ride?" or "In your opinion, do you think Disneyland will bring the Submarine Voyage ride back in time for the park's 50th anniversary?" would be a reasonable question to ask. After all, you are then asking for people's opinions. The question, as you posed is, is not very clear. You were wanting to ask for opinions? Predictions? Hopes? What? I'm not going to approve a request for a poll that isn't clear or easy to understand.
Of course, a second problem with a question like that is that I think most people are going to say "yes" to a question like "should they?" I mean, who would say no? What would be the point of having a poll like that when it's going to be pretty obvious from the outset that most people will answer one way? I mean, if I opened a poll that asked, "how much do you want to pay for admission to Disneyland, $100 or $1.00?" that's pretty silly, too.
Also, it is unrealistic to ask us to include "Because Al said so" in a poll answer option. You can replace that with "Because MouseInfo said so" or "Because Doobie said so" or whomever else, but it won't change a thing. By adding such an option, we would be encouraging members to discuss another Web site, eventually leading to criticisms... and you should know that we don't allow that.
That said, cstephens and Bill are right -- in general, our default is to say no to poll requests (after all, we don't have the feature available for members for a reason).
Sheila 05-27-2003, 11:31 PM Just to add to the general discussion from a long-time message board user....
Polls are generally discouraged on other message boards for three reasons:
1. The options presented never really take into account all the various choices that there should be. As a result, most poll threads degenerate into "hey, you didn't put the variation I would choose" which further devolves into 20-25 posts about the omissions on the poll before getting into a valid discussion of the topic.
2. Generally, the original poster is trying to find out information on a subject that they don't know about. So as a result, the poll choices never really get to the heart of the matter until someone posts an alternative choice.
3. It annoys most message board regulars because it's viewed as a waste of bandwidth. (Now, I'm definitely not saying MM's would be, it's just a fact of life.)
So, skipping the poll option and posting a open-ended question seems to be the best way to stimulate discussion on the desired topic.
Does this help?

Mostly what the administrators (not necessarily the moderators) have said no to recently is polls and avatars. I don't think they have been on the no train. I could be wrong.
The no on avatars is pretty quick because I think most of the thought/discussion/analysis of this was done when they were disabled. I'm assuming that the issues present when they said no are still evident and they will keep saying no until those issues are no longer evident. Now, someone can (and does) start a thread about every two months asking for their return, but its like walking into K-Mart and saying "hey, can I take this toaster for free?" K-Mart staff doesn't need to have a long discussion about this request, they can say no pretty quickly, and until they figure they can operate by giving away their merchandise, they will probably keep saying no.
The no on polls is something I don't quite agree with, the logic I mean, but again, they have already made the basic decisions, and asking 50 times is probably not going to change that.
I guess to sum up, the administrators of the site have, over the course of 2 or so years, always appeared to me to be willing to adjust the site to better benefit the participants when they can. They have done it time and again. However, they have also been willing to set rules and standards and hold to them, something I appreciate.
