I have the TAD cable (Telephone Answering Device) connected from the modem to the sound card so I can use it as a speaker phone. I have followed the instructions from Creative Lab's knowledge base to make it work. Basically they just make sure you have all the appropriate inputs and outputs turned on and turned up in your sound mixer.

I can make it work using the SuperVoice software that came with the modem, but for some reason it doesn't "hear" the microphone. I know the mic works fine, but when I try to talk to the person on the other end they can't hear me. But I'm not too worried about that because I don't like their software and don't really want to use it.

I'd rather use the PhoneDialer that is included with windows. When PhoneDialer dials the number I can hear the dial tone and beeping over the speakers. But as soon as it finishes dialing it mutes the modem, like when you make a dial-up internet connection. I'd rather have it not mute the modem so that I can hear the phone ring and someone answer. So how can I do that? I can't find a setting anywhere to turn off that "mute after dial" feature. Is there some way of doing it?

I think if you go into Hyperterminal and type ATM3 and press enter it'll disable the mute after dialing thing for your modem.

Most modems shut up after dialing cause people don't like to hear the data conversation....(I can't imagine why :rolleyes: )

Hope that helps a little, you may want to check on the modems AT command set, I know with most modems ATMX, where X is a number 0 through 3 sets different modes for the modem

0 mutes the modem speaker
1 keeps the speaker active till a connection is established
2 mutes the speaker after dialing
3 keeps the speaker on all the time

That's how it was for my old 9600 modem!

Thanks Dexter. That works just fine when I use Hyperterminal but it doesn't work in Phone Dialer. I entered the ATM3 command into the Extra Settings field of the Modem control panel. But when I dial it still mutes after the call is placed. Here's the log session. There's some more initialization strings entered after the ATM3 string gets sent. I wonder if those are overriding the command. Here is the log from one session with a couple of my comments:
