How about this--why don't you have a separate section somewhere solely for introductions--like the thread that was started a while ago in the Lounge but keeps sinking down. New members may not see that when they start posting.

I know we have the profile, but sometimes you find out very interesting things about a person when they just chat for a paragraph or so.

Yes..exactly...and if you have over 100 posts...don't start tangents...the one that Lani made has people who have been here forever posting...

I sort of pictured a fora (HA) that was separate unto itself that was titled New Posties or something much better and people would check in there first to introduce themselves. Then the moldy oldie posters would not have to bring the thread up by talking about themselves...not that we aren't all interesting...I know I love to write about my self...

You know what I mean?

how big could on get... nevermind, somehow, someway a subject will come up. but they shouldn't get that big, if they do, then that person is like really interesting.

I know what you mean and I agree but I do believe there has to be a little bit of hello chat by the moldy oldies otherwise there will be no connection for the newbies..you know?

Now I feel bad because I wrote in that specific topic!!:( But I figured since i have never really introduced myself, I should start somewhere.

I do like Lisa's main idea about a seperate section so the newbies can get started.

And I promise not to interfere....:)

ACTUALLY, I appreciated it. I never really got the whole Paul Rudd thing, probably partially because I don't really know who he is-- couldn't play the six degrees thing to save my life-- and you explained it in that post.

If I were a newbie and walked in and someone said, "Paul Rudd" which started an off-topic tangent, I'd be lost and feel like I was missing something-- but if I read that thread, I'd get it.

It was kinda like the days of a newsgroup that I don't read anymore. Someone would say "Oh, and when I went I did the Goat Trick and it worked!" and a newbie would say, "What's the Goat Trick" and 5,000 people would reply "Ah... the Goat Trick" but there was no place that EXPLAINED the goat trick, so some veteran poster would have to come to the aid of the poor newbie and explain the Goat Trick.

(so how long will it take for the inevitable reply?)

Adrienne, I just want you to know that to a Burning Man veteran, "the goat trick" has an entirely different meaning (though it is usually phrased in a way that I can't repeat here).

My issue with a brand new forum is that I think eventually the more established people will just stop going and spend all their time in the other fora. Leaving the new person to wonder if they are just being ignored.

I thing I've seen done on a board is that one of the more social regulars was appointed "welcome fairy". Anytime that poster saw a new member make their first post, she would follow up with an official "welcome to the neighborhood, here are some things you might find useful to know". Might that be an option?

A) Ok, so I'm lousy at Latin. Cannot for the life of me keep that straight! (I also cannot spell "unfortunately" no matter how many ties I've tried...)

B) I nominate eandcdad as the official welcome fairy--for no other reason than I would love to see him in a tutu carrying a wand....

C) I don't know that I would ignore a new members forum--I love to read about people--plus unlike a single thread it would not get lost among oldies posting about the new Sega game or weekend predictions.

BUT...don't go by me--I've never seen how this works on any other boards, so I will rely on more experiencedpeople.

Fairies don't wear TuTus...they wear diaphinous chiffon thingys...and guys can't be 'faries' any more...they get beat up too much...
I'd rather picture E&C as a 'welcome Wagon'...'head 'em up and move 'em out'.......hey E&C.."How about them Bears?"

What is this prediliction of human females to humiliate their 'loved ones' by fostering the dreaded TuTu on them? Bad enough the daughters get the obligatory TuTu encroachment on their dignity much less mates.
TuTus are stupid looking on ANYTHIG with legs..that includes Children and Husbands and yes even Chimps.

And while I'm at it...Halloween is a night of horrors and monsters...yet for the past few years we have had little girls in TuTus and Fairy wands come to the door. How scary is that!

Believe me, eandcdad has very attractive legs--it would be anything but humiliating for him. I'm sure I would be beating all of you women off him with a stick (or wand);) And my little four year old will come trick or treat at your house this year Doodle....you have never seen a cuter dancing poodle w/tutu in your life. Really.
