View Full Version : Breaking news?
jrad32 04-23-2003, 09:00 PM This is nitpickey, but it is a pet peeve. The big red breaking news banner at the top of this site is ridiculous. As I type this message it is after 9 p.m. PST, and the story about the tech falling from the Hyperion was posted at 3:55 p.m. PST. I'm sorry, but five hours later is not breaking news.
Then consider the fact that the accident happened early in the morning and we're talking about more than 12 hours later and we still see "breaking news."
That's crap. How about slugging the item update or something, because breaking news it is not. This is the same sad syndrome that CNN and other news agencies fall victim to when they run breaking news crawls about something that happened hours and sometimes days ago. It is ridiculous.
Not Afraid 04-23-2003, 09:07 PM Maybe MP should hire you to spend your time (all 24 hours of your day) to monitor breaking news notifications? Could you please send them your ap?
DisneyFan25863 04-23-2003, 09:09 PM What banner?
EDIT: never mind :D
jrad32 04-23-2003, 09:14 PM All I'm saying is after a couple hours you'd think they would change it to update, or something more accurate. Or they could just put update on to begin with.
Maybe MP can hire you Not Afraid to be there personal defender.

And all I'm saying is that maybe these people have other things going on in their lives that preclude the "emergency" of removing a banner for you.
re: PD
Not interested. Thanks for the offer though.
jrad32 04-23-2003, 09:20 PM Never said it was an emergency, just that it is inaccurate. I think I also started by saying it was a nitpick and a pet peeve.
Sorry if I've offended you, although your defensive nature leads me to believe that you are probably often offended.

Actually, no. I just felt that it was a little much to start an entire thread about it.
What d'ya know. I've been called defensive! That's a new one.
Thanks! I'm amused.
jerjer2005 04-23-2003, 09:25 PM :( :( IT'S VERY SAD A REDICULOUS TO ME TO SEE SOME ONE LIKE JRAD PATRONIZE SUCH MINUTE THINGS. BESIDES NUMERIOUS FACTS THAT I COULD LIST TO YOU WHY THEY WOULD LEAVE THE BANNER UP ...
(1. its a new post
2. somthing is breaking news if you havnt read it before
3. its breaking to me ESPECIALLY since i was there hours after the incident happened)
NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU SHOULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT IF THAT WAS YOUR FRIEND, FAMILY MEMBER OR CO- CAST MEMBER YOU WOULD SURE THINK IT WAS BREAKING NEWS IN YOUR MIND.
NEXT TIME LETS THINK BEFORE WE TYPE A PATRONIZING REMARK LIKE YOU JUST DID. THANX
ps. i also would find it appropiate for you to eaither post a retraction of your statements or delete your message all together in the event that a family member, friend, co-cast member or the man himself were to read your hanious remarks on the situation.
***with SNARE and a shout jerjer is out*** :(
MammaSilva 04-23-2003, 09:40 PM Ok guys... don't feed the troll......:~D
mkyears 04-23-2003, 09:49 PM Jrad stop whining if it bugs you then go to another site where everything meets your requirements
LSPoorEeyorick 04-24-2003, 09:24 AM You know, for those of us who don't have the chance to hit the site more than once a day, it still *is* breaking news.
RStar 04-24-2003, 09:33 AM To an update that is posted every couple of days, a bit of information that won't make up a whole update could be called breaking. This is not live the way TV or radio is.
What else would you call it?
"News Flash"?
"New information, please read"?
"Disneyland news bite"?
And you're right, it is nitpickey.
disguy 04-24-2003, 09:37 AM I like the breaking news if it's "breaking news" or not. Even though I heard that it happend I'd like the full story so that would be where I would go. Darkbeer does a great job I like the fact he posts the links to where you can read the actual news story. That contributes wonders for my lazyness! Thanks Darkbeer :D
Also, I should mention that the LA Times and Orange County Register just picked this up this morning. Breaking news indeed - 36 hours later.
"But wait," you say, "those are newspapers - they only publish once a day!" True - but the local news radio stations - KNX and KFWB - only picked up the story this morning as well - after the newspapers ran with it.
So, no, it's not breaking news in the "Live On Scene" sense of the term, but it was certainly more timely than the major news media in this market.
AVP
jtracy 04-24-2003, 02:52 PM I personally think the breaking news was highly appropriate in this case and the length in which it was left on was also appropriate. Unfortunately, many of us don't have the luxury of checking in 9-10 times a day so it was appropriate to leave up for the amount of time it was to reach the greatest readership base.
Now if you want to talk about misusing "Breaking News" just watch CNN (when a war isn't going on) and look at some of the crazy stuff they use it for (Breaking News - "Russian President to visit U.S. Next Year," etc.)
