View Full Version : Do we need a GAC?
Tracy R. 04-22-2003, 08:33 AM This question is for anyone who has a child with Asperger's Syndrome or High-Functioning Autism. Do you think a GAC would be a good idea? Our daughter is 5-years-old with Asperger's blooming. :-) She can be fine most of the time, but then if a lot has been going on, she may have a melt down, or not. On the other hand, she may wake up and the day be one big melt down. If we got one, it would only be used during times she experiences sensory overload. Otherwise, we don't do anything differently.
The only concern is that we don't have a concrete piece of paper that says she has Asperger's. Do we need to make an appointment with the doctor and get one? We leave in a little over a week, and may not be able to. It is through a military base, so who knows.
I guess we could just try it without one, hope for the best, and plan better for the next trip! :-o LOL!
Thanks,
Tracy
Tracy,
I have a son with autism. And you're right-our kid's "look typical".
I have always requested a SAP on our visits to DL. And I've always carried a doctor's notice, although Disney has never asked for proof. Legally, due to ADA, I don't believe they CAN ask for proof-but that's just my thoughts, I might be wrong.
My best advice would be to request the pass and explain your daughter's disability if asked. I wouldn't want you to go through the hassle of a doctor's visit-and I know some of military waits and lines-to have a doctor's note that you may not need.
Have a wonderful time and let us know how it goes.:)

I have been to WDW only twice. Our family lives in California, so we are usually going to Disneyland.
But, my daughter, who has Down syndrome...oft times will have melt downs as well.
Like tjrj-I too would suggest getting a GAC (SAP's at DLR). Disney has never asked me for proof of her disability (but, ...her's is obvious)...but I do have a doctor's letter on hand, just in case.
Disney is always so supportive and kind when it comes to issuing GAC's, that I can't imagine you having any kind of a problem. And, these passes come in so handy when you are trying to enjoy your vacation, and trying to avoid the potential "meltdowns" our kids often have. And Disney understands that.
Definitly, ask for the GAC. You won't be sorry you did...:)
Enjoy your trip!!:D
Tracy R. 04-22-2003, 01:16 PM Thank y'all so much for your responses! And Jan, being Asperger myself, I love your quote! "I know of nobody who is purely autistic or purely neurotypical. Even God had some autistic moments, which is why the planets all spin-Jerry Newport."
Warmly,
Tracy
RStar 04-22-2003, 04:59 PM Oh, I thought GAC was the TV station (Great American Country-music)!
I would get the SAP first thing in the morning. You don't have to use it when you don't want to, and it helps to have it when you need it.

You might already know this but your doctor may not even require an appointment for you to pick up a note- he/she could just leave a note on a script form with the front office/nurses. I'd get one just to be sure that the process goes easier.
A few weeks ago I had to register my son for kindergarten. I took all my necessary documents. Now, I knew they were probably going to photocopy them, and I didn't want to wait any longer than I had to- so I took the originals just in case they needed to see the originals, but I handed them the photocopies. The clerk loved me and the process was quick. It wasn't necessary but it was well worth the effort. That may or may not be a good example ;)
