I've only begun to watch this show, but this was my favorite episode yet! Loved the music, loved the creativity, loved it all! I think that Sue Sylvester is definitely my favorite character on the show.

"What's the difference between elves and slaves?"
"You have rights, you know."
Laughter, laughter, laughter.
And then tears at the end.

I had to replay that line two times because I thought "Did she really just say SLAVES?" LOL!

It's Brit, she has the BEST oneliners every single show...I think it started as a fluke but once it hit they realized it was a gold mine and have done it every show since.

Well, I did love some of the show, especially Coach Biest. (Who wouldn't love the first song? Or the last? Or the Christmas spirit in general?)
But heck, even I need a break from Rachel and Finn! And I felt to some extent they were writing a Christmas album.
Doesn't mean I won't be buying the songs, though. :)

Loved it....and yep, cried once more. I LOVE Coach Biest!
Loved that Brittany truly believes in Santa and that she got her wish! Of all the couples, I love her and Artie....so sweet.

Ok, this totally reflects my feelings.
The second time they sang I thought: Didn't she already sing?? And all the random singing made me feel like "Oh, they had to pad the Christmas album." Which I actually already bought before Thanksgiving. But still...

I loved how she had the "Cindy Lou Who" hairstyle in her scene with Grinch Sue. And poor Becky as "Max." Of course, they had to get in yet another song from the 80's-the "classic" Wham holiday song.

They got me twice with the tears, but that's fairly standard for them. The first time was Santa Biest talking to Brit. The second time was a combination of the kids singing the Whoville song (not sure what else to call it) & Artie standing with that contraption.

So touching! So was it Coach Biest who got the machine for Artie? I thought at first that it was Sue repenting for her grinchiness -- then I realized she didn't know about Brittany's wish. Coach Biest looking in & then fighting tears would indicate that she was the one...

I laughed so hard when I saw Becky's Max antler. All of the stuff taken from the classic Grinch cartoon was wonderful. I knew the kids would have to sing the Whoville song -- but I was pleased to see that I was right (and they did a lovely job).
The duet between Kurt and Blaine was a highlight of the show.
I had to shoo my daughter out of the room not long after the show began. I wasn't sure which direction they were going with the "believing in Santa" thing, but I didn't want DD to hear enough to start questioning. She's 6 1/2 and still believes in Santa. I don't want to rush the switch to non-believer. I think I distracted her at JUST the right time -- then she ran upstairs to watch Nightmare Before Christmas on ABC Family. :D
I was prepping chicken while the show was on, and had to stop so I could wash my hands & wipe my eyes when the tears started flowing. Such a sweet show!
Oh -- and yeah... I'm really done with Rachel and Flynn. :eyeroll:

Yeah, I hadn't thought of her until they had the shot of her - and I remembered that she had the ability to "break into the house", so she had access to do it.
But I kept expecting some kind of mention about Puck and Rachel decorating the Christmas tree and caroling. And Rachel makes wishes to Santa about what she wants? The only thing they threw in was the one line she said about being Jewish and therefore not giving Christmas presents but making an exception in Finn's case. Heck, I know someone who's Jewish who always gives Christmas presents. His wife is Catholic, so he gets her Christmas presents and she gets him Hannukah presents. :)
Oh, and shna - it's "Finn". Flynn is in "Tangled" and "Tron Legacy". ;)

My Mom was raised Catholic, but converted to Judaism before she and Daddy (who was Jewish) got married. We always lit Hanukkah candles and had a Christmas tree (which we would call a "Hanukkah Bush" ever so often). We never did Hanukkah presents. Daddy passed away over 14 years ago, but we still light Hanukkah candles in the menorah he got from his father... and we still have a Christmas tree & do all our present-giving on Christmas.

Heh. I thought it looked wrong when I posted it ... but I prefer the name "Flynn" to "Finn." I hereby change his name!

I LOVED that Artier's Bionic legs were made in Israel. ;) Coach Biest is the best, but I think Becky is softening Sue just a tad. Happy 8th night of Hanukkah btw. Hope your Hanukkah was nice!

Coach Biest is the best, but I think Becky is softening Sue just a tad.
Additionally, Coach doing that will open up another story line to get to know her more. Bionic legs are NOT something you can afford on a teacher's salary!
As long as Becky is softening Sue, I'm good with it. If Sue starts to turn Becky 'to the dark side' I'm NOT going to be happy. (And it did seem that way a little bit when they were un-Christmasing the choir room)
I was glad after they 'took advantage of Brittany's innocence' last week with the magic comb, that they turned it around and made that the underlying theme of the show, in a positive way.

Why? Because she has Down Syndrome? Because it looks to me like, if she did, it would just show Sue to be an equal opportunity type of gal. ;)

Sue has a soft spot for Becky primarily because Sue's own sister has Down's Syndrome. Her sister lives in an assisted living arrangements, and, I think, the recent episode with their mother (played by Carol Burnett), showed that Sue had to take on a maternal role to her sister early on. This also indicates why she may present such a tough image to the rest of the world; deep down she feels vulnerable.
As far as the Jewish students engaged in Christmas activities, as a Jewish kid growing up in a predominantly Christian small town (of course, Jews are still a small minority, even in our area, which has a relatively strong Jewish presence-lots of synagogues and Temples), we were exposed to a lot of the secular aspects of the holiday. We never had a Christmas tree (and never missed having one), but my mom did not mind if we helped friends decorate their trees, in their homes. The particular activities they were engaged in, such as caroling, and decorating trees, really are not at odds with their religious beliefs. It's not like they showed all the kids taking communion or other overtly religious acts.

Yea, because of the Down Syndrome. Being a minion (helping with swapping out the name bucket, calling her when the teachers started to take the stuff away, 'spying' for her (not sure if Becky has been called on for that or not), and all the other stuff Becky's done for Sue this season) is 'fine' and does show that Sue's equal opportunity and does treat Becky as she treats all her Cherrios. Getting Becky to do things that aren't so morally ambiguous (stealing) bothers me. I guess I have seen too many Law & Orders where one kid was cajoled (or bullied) into doing something clearly wrong by someone taking advantage of them.

mom22gls - did you ever wish for things from Santa, though? That's the one that, although secular, is still very "Christmas-y" I thought was a little 'out there' for Rachel to have done.
ETA: Heck, does anyone who 'doesn't believe' wish for things from Santa!

Not really. We never really addressed it, but I'm pretty sure I just knew that gifts really come from the parents. like I knew there was not, literally, a "tooth fairy." I think my kids were always well aware that it was me putting money under their pillows for a lost tooth (maybe the Chinese red envelopes I used was a tip-off), but we all just played along. Didn't make it any less fun. That is a good point, about her getting Becky to do things that clearly break the rules. What happens if Becky gets caught, and has to face the consequences, and Sue either can't or won't back her.
I've never been Christian or celebrated Christmas as anything other than a secular holiday -- but I always visited Santa & asked him for stuff. My dad was raised in a Conservative Jewish household, but shed the religious belief as soon as he left home (though I'm not sure he ever believed in the religion itself -- just did the traditional stuff that was expected of him). Even though not "observant," he always clearly self-identified as Jewish. To the best of my knowledge, he never had a problem with me visiting (or believing in) Santa. I think it was a fun secular thing for him.
In my household, we claim no religion at all -- but we actively encourage the whole Santa thing. It's just fun! I also love love LOVE Christmas carols, going caroling, and listening to all kinds of Christmas music. Mom & I do the Messiah Sing-Along every year. For us, it's all about the music itself & not the message behind the lyrics. Singing gorgeous music in harmony with a crowd of hundreds is absolutely amazing.

Backing up a bit, I realize that Sue's sister has Down and there's that connection.
But I don't think Becky's bullied into anything because I do think that Sue actually respects Becky more than she respects most of the other students. The other thing I've learned about kids with Special Needs is that yes, there are times when they want to be people pleasers, the other thing is that you can't fool them. They can figure people out pretty well. I think Becky's going to be just fine and she'll probably learn a thing or two from Sue.
I think it's fun that Sue's minion happens to have Down syndrome. I hope that doesn't sound patronizing because I REALLY don't want it to. If anything, I wonder if Becky doesn't help Sue be more grounded?

I think Becky probably does help Sue be more grounded. And I also agree that Sue does respect her AS A PERSON more than she does Santana and the crew. I guess I tend to be overly protective of the 'underdog' and although Sue was close to the line with the Grinch stuff, in her and Becky's mind, it was just taking back what had been taken away from her. I just wish they'd stay a little farther from that line in the future with Becky.
And you're right - sometimes special needs kids can see right through the BS screens people put up!

When she, as Santa, was talking about being a young girl and wishing she looked like other girls but all she got was patience and that was good because she eventually learned to put "being husky to good use."
I took that to mean either:
A) She had some sort of athletic career (maybe they'll work in the actresses real-life arm wrestling career; though when I was in Turkey, women's weightlifting was prominently on prime time television so maybe that is a viable money maker); or
B) She has some sort of plus-size modeling career; or
C) She was once a Nazi-hunter with Sue's mom and thus was able to call in some favors back in Israel (well, this one doesn't stem so much from what she said as the legs being from Israel).

Ooooooooooh. Hmmm. I hadn't thought about that connection. Because they love Sue's mom in Israel.
