I always found it a wonderful milestone when my kids went from being completely terrified meeting "real" characters at DL to actually enjoying and looking forward to it! My youngest could not even tolerate a princess coming within three feet of her at two years old! She even slapped at Cinderella's hand when it was offered :)
At about three and a half yrs. the transformation occurred--now the characters are the highlight of the day.
