What are the "big gates" in Epcot between UK and Canada I believe where they have private functions and the catering room near bathrooms on the walk from Future World to Mexico area? We noticed private parties with character and were wondering what it was about???

I don't recall what the new name is (if there is one) but that's where they had the Millennium Village in 1999-2000. There's a large building back there they use (just as you thought) for special events.
Some have tickets available to the public (like the Party for the Senses during the Food & Wine Festival and some of the other signature events), some are truly private events (Team in Training does their Pasta Parties there during the Marathon Weekend).
The old Odyssey restaurant is another area like that (in fact, that's where the Mouse Adventure kick off was last November). It's smaller, and is in the building located between Mexico and Test Track. The baby care center is also located in the same building and is open to those that need it.

thx-good to know
I seem to think they now call that the "Festival Showplace," but I'm probably wrong. When we were doing our site visit prior to the Epcot MouseAdventure, the sales rep took us there to show us the venue, saying we could rent that "when we got big enough." That place holds something like 5000 people - I don't WANT MouseAdventure to get that big!

It is the former Milennium Village and is now called World Showplace. It is used for conventions, special events, and on occasion for overflow dining.
