Comments: We were there for the Princess Half Marathon - a Mommies and Favorite aunts weekend away with a few friends...
Cast of characters: Me (who it's all about anyway.) swanie, J and C (and a bunch of others.)
swanie is one of the reasons I decided to dip my toes into the world of Half Marathon events. She is a half marathon veteran, DVC owner, Disney nut. After I started training for the Disneyland Half, she started in on me about future events and trying to convince me that I would do this again, in particular, that I should do the Princess so I could earn the 2010 Coast to Coast medal. About 5 miles into the DL Half, I knew I was going to go for it.
Between swanie and my mom and sister and husband, my plans for Princess very quickly started to fall into place. Swanie booked Kidani Village for Friday through Sunday nights, with her DVC points. I upgraded my 8-day park hopper to a WDW AP when we visited WDW as a family in October (see that Trip Report here.) As it came closer, I really wanted to fly in on Thursday so we could have time to tour the parks and see the Expo before the merchandise sold out. J and C would be joining us at Kidani Village on Friday but they had booked ASMu for Thursday night. When I called my travel agent, she remembered I had an AP and got me the AP rate on our room KA-CHING!
Finally I booked my airfare. And by "I" I mean Doc. Swanie was leaving Phoenix on a 4:00 pm USAirways flight so we found a round trip on USAirways out of Ontario that would have me and swanie on the same flight from PHX to MCO.
Everything was set!
----- DAY 1 Thursday, March 4, 2010 -----
Leading up to the trip our lives were incredibly hectic which wigged me out. I barely put any forethought into this trip, which is quite unusual for me. I felt very unprepared - and worse, I was completely packed and ready to go before 11:00 pm the night before I left. That NEVER happens. Ever. But it happened this time.
I woke up on Thursday bright and early. I had arranged to take the Super Shuttle to the airport so that Doc could take the kids to school on time. SS was supposed to arrive between 7:15 and 7:30. At 7:15 the driver called to say he had to pick someone up at 7:30 who lived 20-30 minutes away from me in the opposite direction from the airport, during rush hour traffic. I told him how unhappy I was about this. I told him there was no way he'd be here in the time he claimed.
To make a long story, including phone calls to corporate and from corporate and still unresolved issues, I was right. Not only did he not get here by 8 but we hit traffic on the way to the airport, too. Eventually I got there but I won't make that mistake again. They were fine when I had enough to fill our own van but the anxiety was not worth dealing with them.
I had a long layover in Phoenix but they had free wifi so I planted myself in a Mexican restaurant near an electrical outlet and left a good tip for my waiter who brought me diet brown stuff refills. Just about the time I arrived at my gate to leave for MCO, swanie arrived! We picked up some sandwiches to eat on the trip to MCO and flew to Orlando.
This was my first time with DME. I checked my suitcase and since we were arriving at 9:45 I picked it up myself rather than risk having to wait for a late night delivery. Once on the bus, we learned we would be the third of six drop-off locations! The bus stopped at Coronado Springs and ASSports before we came to ASMusic. It still had to go to ASMovies before two stops at Animal Kingdom! We felt bad for the AKL peeps.
Now, the day before I'd called ASMu and very sweetly asked that our room be near J and C's room. I was careful to explain that I didn't care if we were right next door to each other but we did hope to be in the same building. At check-in, swanie suggested that I may have scared the CM checking us in. I replied that she simply lacked an appreciation for healthy enthusiasm. I mean, really? Who isn't excited to be at WDW? Really?? I was enthusiastic.
On our way to our room, I stopped at the food court to get a refillable mug and fill it with Sprite Zero. I did not scare the CM there. She giggled and seemed to enjoy my healthy enthusiasm. :) We found our room and J was still awake so she came to visit.
Now, I had made a mistake at check-in. I told the CM not to attach my credit card to my Keys to the Kingdom card because we planned to change resorts the next day anyway. I didn't realize that meant I would not be able to pay for internet from the room. I called the front desk from our room and the first CM said he fixed it. It still didn't work so I called back and the second CM explained that to fix it, she'd have to reissue my key but that I would not have to go back to the front desk to pick it up until the next day.
After a bit of chatting, J went back to her room and swanie and I settled into our beds to go to sleep...

Day 2: Friday, March 5, 2010 "Don't Judge Me"
Backing up a bit, swanie and I were on the parking lot side of the Broadway building on the Movies side of the All Star Music Resort.
I slept ok but not great. I woke up a bit but the worst part was a strange sound in the middle of the night. Apparently it was worse for swanie than me. At first I thought it was a group of drummers outside. Then I thought it was the A/C. At one point swanie got out of bed trying to figure out if it was something she could turn off.
We woke up rather early for vacation if you ask ME but we had a mission today: Get to the Expo while they still have a good selection of merchandise!
Swanie and I dressed and packed and met J and C downstairs at the car. On our way we spotted a big metal box with electrical gauge things on it. We decided that machine, whatever it was, it was the source of the noise that woke us up.
Once in our rental car, we drove over the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Kidani Village, to check in and get our Keys to the Kingdom. Carlos at the front desk was very helpful. Swanie had requested the dining plan on the reservation and while it was on her confirmation, it was not in the computer. Carlos spoke with the lead and they fixed that. They figured out the cost per person and each of us was able to pay for our own dining plan with our personal credit cards rather than needing to write checks or get cash to pay swanie back.
We were happy to know that our room was ready so we took our suitcases and such up to our room before heading to Mara counter service at Jambo House for breakfast. We sat outside because the weather was so warm. Watch out for the birds!! C lost a piece of her... uhm, meal... to a quick moving bird!! (You can't prove that we ate bacon on Friday morning. There aren't any pictures. You can't you can't you can't.)
After breakfast we left for Wide World of Sports to get to the Event Expo. The Expo was being held at Josten's Center but the entire complex was busy as the Atlanta Braves had a spring training game scheduled that afternoon. The line was pretty long for the Expo - we were down by the fields when we entered the line - but as soon as the doors opened it moved rather quickly. The Fairy Godmother was available for a photo opportunity by the front door for those who wanted one and two handsome footmen (? is that what they're called) stood by one of the doorways, too.
Our first mission was to check in for the Event. I quickly collected my bib number and bag. Unfortunately, we had heard that there was a problem with the event shirts so I went there next with a group determined to figure out what was going on. At registration, the website said to order one size UP because the shirts would be cut small. My size Large shirt from Disneyland fits me very nicely and I usually select a size Large Champion shirt at Target so I ordered an XL shirt for the event. That said, the shirts in the XL box were labelled "XXL", the shirts in the L box were "XL" and so on and so forth. In addition, the shirts were mismatched. Not every shirt with the same size label were the same size. Two women I know held two shirts up which were both labelled "large" but one was actually physically bigger than the other by a good amount of space!
I went ahead and took the XL shirt labelled "XXL" as I had been assigned. The shirt is probably a true XL. It's a bit roomier than I would have needed but it is not so loose to be uncomfortable so I kept it. Most of the shirts for trade were pink or white and I preferred to keep the "official" blue shirt than trade for a smaller size.
At the Disneyland Half, they ran out of my size of "I Did It!" shirts before I arrived so my next goal was to get some official merchandise before it ran out. There was SO much cute stuff that if I had an unlimited gift card, I could have purchased so much more than I did! I settled on a pale pink shirt with the event logo on the left side and the "I DID IT!" shirt. I also purchased a coffee tumbler with the event logo on it.
One cute thing we liked was an official Disney booth with engravable luggage tags. Swanie and J purchased tags with the Marathon logo to commemorate their "Dopey" status from January (they completed the 5K, Half and Marathon all in that one weekend.) I selected a pink Mickey shaped tag and had "Coast to Coast 2010" put on it. They also had bracelets and cell phone tags available as well as little rivets we could add to our tags that I sort of wanted but I worried would fall off so I skipped.
The Disney booth was handing out Mardi Gras type bead necklaces for the DL Half so I stopped to get some of those. The DVC booth was handing out camera/cell phone carrying cases that you could slide onto your fuel belt or use the arm band to keep on your arm. Got one of those.
But I really wanted a shirt from One More Mile (http://www.onemoremile.net). They are a kick in the pants. I love every shirt they have. I personally think that "Does This Shirt Make My Butt Look Fast (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/Does-This-Shirt-Make-My-Butt-Look-Fast-Short-Sleeve/prod_514.html)" is one of the funniest and maybe a better known shirt, but I personally liked this one (http://www.onemoremile.net/Short-Sleeve/If-It-Weren-39-t-For-Me-Short-Sleeve/prod_694.html) (although I didn't see it in the Expo, I saw someone else wearing it on the course and either she had it on backwards or she got one that had that on the back instead of the front.
I walked around carrying one of these for awhile but put it back (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/Find-Your-Happy-Pace-Short-Sleeve/prod_312.html).
This one always makes me laugh (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/Seemed-Like-A-Good-Idea-Short-Sleeve/prod_335.html) when I see it. As does this one. (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/This-IS-My-Race-Pace-Short-Sleeve/prod_339.html) And of course, this one (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/If-Found-On-Ground-Short-Sleeve/prod_633.html). And I could totally pull of this one (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/Race-Day-Strategy-Short-Sleeve/prod_640.html). And I really LOL'd when I read this one (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/Facebook-Short-Sleeve/prod_703.html). (I can't find one now but some of the shirts for slow people say "DO NOT PASS, RACE OFFICIAL" on the back...)
I'm too slow to pull off this one (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/Run-Like-A-Girl-Short-Sleeve/prod_581.html) or this one (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Short-Sleeve/Some-Girls-Short-Sleeve/prod_505.html) but they amuse me, nonetheless.
In the end I purchased a short sleeve version of this shirt. (http://www.onemoremilerunning.com/Penguin-Gear/Tanks-Singlets/Miracle-Tank/prod_574.html) I am proud of myself and I am fine and dandy being a slower marathoner - I think the jokes about being slow are great! - But I decided to go for the mush-factor.
With purchases in hand, we went back to the car and drove over to Epcot. On our way in, we picked up fast passes for Soarin' and then went to Le Cellier to see if we could add two people to our 2:55 ADR. Swanie may or may not have hugged a Canadian. Twice. I can't really say. There may have been a photo e-mailed to her husband of the fourth hug. But. We got two added. We actually saw Courtney, my family's Canadian from our trip in October, while we were in the Lobby! She remembered me because of an incident involving my need to take a picture of a chocolate mousse that my son had already begun to eat...
We wandered over to Rose & Crown's pub for a bit while the others had a beer and then it was already time to return to Le Cellier for late lunch. Our server was Jill. Poor Jill. She was faced with six slap happy women. Oh, dear. Jill was a tremendous sport. She claimed we were fun. We left Jill a really big tip, which she totally earned. I don't remember what we had to eat. Do do doo doo doo.... (Don't look at me like that. Don't. Dining Plan. 13.1 miles on Sunday morning. The Devil Made Me Do It!) ANYWAY.
Afterwards we stopped in Mexico for margaritas. I was disappointed that they no longer had the blue margarita we had in October but the server said they could make a blended blue margarita for me. More hysterical laughter ensued. Unfortunately, I was developing a bad headache that was not going away. (Probably the guilt from the bacon and the beef... Yeah, I don't quite believe it either...) I only finished about 2/3 of the margarita.
After our October trip, I was bummed that I had not spent more time shopping through World Showcase, so I separated from my group and went shopping. I found some items for my mom and sister in Japan. I remembered several of my MP friends purchasing and enjoying Banana Bears and I wondered where to find them. Just like everyone else, I have my travel agent's personal cell phone number on speed dial on my cell phone so I called her from Japan to ask "Where do I go to buy Banana Bears?" (Don't LOOK at me like that. She was still at work. It was official work business. It was far more appropriate than the time I called on a Saturday from Santa Barbara to yell about the hotel who booked a room they didn't even have on site. I promised her I won't ever do that one again!)
She explained where they were in the UK section. I called swanie and caught up with the group in Morroco. We wandered over toward the UK and sure enough, I found the Banana Bears. We sat outside of Rose and Crown chatting for a bit and the rest of the group was ready for Soarin.
I have a mental block about riding "Soarin' over CALIFORNIA" in Florida and my body was giving up. I'd been having some hip pain and walking around all day had aggravated it. I told the ladies that I'd meet them back at the room and started towards the front of Epcot. My boys really liked the Fanta lip balm from Club Cool so I hoped to get some more or even some Barq's lip balm. Unfortunately, I arrived at Club Cool at 8 and they closed at 7.
Bummed and feeling guilt, I wandered out to the parking lot. I very briefly considered jumping onto the Spaceship Earth ride but I was really tired and I knew I would get very little sleep the next night.
Here's where my WDW ignorance popped up: I left looking for the bus stops and went to the right. Yeah, I ended up towards HCA/Diamond parking with no bus stops in sight. Meanwhile, I'd called home to check in with my kids and my mom, who has NO knowledge of WDW, was very worried that I was wandering around the Epcot parking lot ALONE.
Mom, this is WDW. It's lit. There's plenty of people around. I'm totally safe.
"Well I'm not hanging up until you are where you're supposed to be."
Ok, well I know where I'm supposed to be, Mom. I can see the buses.
"Well what's TAKING you so long to get there?"
This place is HUGE, Mom, you have no IDEA. It's NOT like Disneyland. Mom, you can't even WALK TO THE MAGIC KINGDOM. There's a LAKE, Mom. You HAVE to take a boat or a monorail. You just have no idea. Don't worry.
When I finally found the sign to tell me which bus stop to use for AKL my mom let me go.
I texted swanie to call me when they got to the Parking Lot so I could help them carry my stuff in from the car but they all knew about my hip and wouldn't. Unfortunately, they didn't know where I'd stashed my refillable mug so swanie and I had to go back to get that, anyway. J pulled a ziplock out of her suitcase and they all got on me to ice my hip. (Which, I consider very kind and supportive and touching even if I might have teased them and said "YES, MUTH-ER!")
So stop reading if you're squeamish.
You have been warned.
While I was icing my hip and reading e-mail, swanie turned down the bedspread on our bed. And found popcorn.
Here's the thing: We hadn't slept in this bed yet and we had not had any popcorn at all since arriving at the resort.
EEEEEEYYYEEEEEW!!!!
We started to check the bed out and swanie thought she saw some hairs on the sheets.
Swanie called downstairs and asked for someone to please come up and change our bed. About 30+ minutes later (it was now after 11 pm,) a gentleman came up with two sheets. He took off the bedspread and blanket and remade the bed. Swanie asked if he might have fresh pillowcases as well. He didn't so he left to get some. At that point I asked swanie "Do you want me to point out that he put the same blanket back on the bed?"
He came back with pillowcases and a new bedspread but the new bedspread was the wrong size for the bed and we repeatedly told him that we didn't really care if we had a bedspread anyway.
Later we concluded that the popcorn was probably stuck inside the bedspread from previous guests and that the sheets were probably, maybe clean sheets in the first place.
That's what we told ourselves anyway.
And then we went to bed without touching the blanket and turned out the lights.
J, C and swanie were waking up at about 4:30 in the morning. I was sleeping in. I'm not that nice...

I'm back.
I didn't mention how much I like the bag they gave us for the event. It was SO much better, in so many ways, that the Disneyland Half bag from September. At DL we just got a big plastic bag with not a lot in it.
At Princess we got a mesh "backpack" - the kind with drawstrings that turn into backpack handles. We got a pair of socks from Ladies Foot Locker, a sample Luna bar, some eyedrops and I can't quite remember what else but just that was a lot more than we got in Anaheim in September. I realize that it was a bit easier to put together a bag like this when most of the participants were the same gender, but still, it was nice. And the bag itself is nice and reusable, it even has a zippered compartment in the front.
The safety pins were in their own little zipped bag which made them easy to find and they included a cable tie so I was able to tie my bag together before I even got to the race Sunday morning and just hand the bag over at the bag-check tent without having to stand around and wait for someone else to put on the "tag" and zip it for me.
I should probably take a picture and post it...

Congratulations Adrienne!

I hate running...any advice on how to get started?
Well first off, I don't run. I walk at a pace faster than 16 minutes per mile. ;) You could say I "wog" to some extent. I walk fast and occasionally break into a jog. :D
I follow the training plan by John Bingham (http://www.waddle-on.com/). He is the mentor and guru and motivator and inspiration for regular people who want to finish a half or even a full marathon! His training plans are outlined in his book Marathoning for Mortals. (http://www.amazon.com/Marathoning-Mortals-John-Bingham/dp/1579547826) There are outlines for a variety of distances and for a variety of "running" styles such as Walking - Walking with some Running - Running with some Walking - Running. Here's a link to the books' official website. (http://www.marathoningformortals.com/uof/marathoningformortals/)
Hope that helps!

Day 3 - Saturday, March 6, 2010 - "I'm not that nice"
Swanie and I, of course, met through MousePlanet. I met J & C through swanie, through a message board for Disney runners. A bunch of folks from that board were at WDW for the Princess Half and we had already spent a good deal of our time meeting up with them on Friday. On Saturday morning, some of them were registered for the Princess 5K with the goal of beating the previous "Personal Worst" time for finishing a 5K.
Swanie, J and C decided to get up early, but not so bright, on Saturday morning to cheer on the 5K participants. I decided Friday night that I'm not that nice. (Ok, I KNEW already that I wasn't that nice, I just confirmed it Friday night.) I preferred to be warm and well-rested. We agreed that I would meet up with them at breakfast and they told me how to get there using the WDW transportation system because I had my minor details wrong. At 4:30 when the alarm clock went off I heard swanie, J and C muttering "We don't like these people this much." And yet, they all got up and got going.
My alarm went off a few hours later.
I got up, showered, dressed and headed out for the bus stop. My roommates had advised me to plan for 45 minutes to get to breakfast and that's about what it took. The bus for Magic Kingdom arrived pretty quickly and I hopped on board. I was sitting near a group of women who had come for a weekend getaway with just the girls, but they were not part of the Half Marathon. They were very friendly and we chatted. They asked if I read a particular website and I said no, but I read MousePlanet. :) I shared a couple of MousePlanet buttons with them and they were very happy to have them. I learned that they were also DVC and when they learned I was from California, they asked me many questions about Disneyland. Once at the Magic Kingdom I got off the bus and boogied over to the Resort Monorail. The women from the bus followed and got on the same car I did! They were heading to the Grand Floridian to sit by the pool all day. We continued to chat until I got off at the Polynesian. The great thing about the monorail at the Polynesian is that it lets off on the second floor right outside of my destination: Kona Cafe - I was gonna get me some TONGA TOAST!!!
(The women on the monorail said to each other "Well she's going to walk for 13 miles tomorrow, SHE can afford to eat it!" HA HA!)
While we waited to be seated, swanie and I went over to the gift shop to look for some gifts for our kids. The shop had some knit gloves for sale. The weather report for Sunday morning was looking colder and colder every day. Swanie decided she didn't want to pay the Disney mark-up on the gloves. I didn't even pay attention to the price to be honest. I did think that swanie got them. I didn't realize until the next morning that she hadn't. But I bought them! (They weren't THAT much.)
Back at the restaurant our group was already sitting. Swanie and I sat with a great group of people. Swanie had never been to Kona Cafe for Tonga Toast!! She was worried about having so much sugar with so little protein and was considering the Kona Cafe's eggs benedict with smoked pulled pork. I jumped on the opportunity! We happily agreed to split the two entrees! Needless to say, breakfast was yummy. I was a little apprehensive about the smoked pulled pork benedict but it was yummy and a great protein balance for my strawberry sauce covered Tonga Toast.
After lunch we climbed into the rental car and headed out to Disney's Hollywood Studios. Before breakfast, swanie, J and C had picked up Fast Passes for Toy Story Mania, so now we went to Rock & Roller Coaster to pick up Fast Passes there. On our way we came upon Dorma Desmond and her agent, Shelby, street performers, in their motor car. The interaction that followed with Dorma and Shelby was priceless. Shelby looked at C and said "You're a good looking woman, I could have you jumping out of Birthday Cakes tomorrow!" C asked Dorma to pose for a picture with C's Mickey gnome. A number of the runners have Mickey Gnomes they carry on their travels and photograph in various locations. Dorma was enamored with the Mickey gnome and C only got him back by pointing out to Dorma that another person in our group had one as well. For the next several minutes, Dorma tried to talk G out of his gnome. "G, give me your GNOOOOOOOMMMMMME."
I realize that you HAD to be there, but trust me, it was freaking HYSTERICAL. As we were walking away to get our FPs, Shelby drove the motor car around the area and Dorma was still calling after us "G, give me your GNOOOOOOMMMMME!" The two of them kept us laughing for quite awhile and, because horses die very slow unnatural deaths on the internet, the gnome joke is still going strong.
Once we had our Fast Passes, we headed back out towards the Character meet and greet area in the Animation building. This is a great spot to see characters and in our case, swanie was on a mission to see Dug from Up. The entire Up cast was still there when we arrived and we waited in line and had a lovely group photo with Karl, Dug, Russell, our group and C & G's gnomes.
We returned to Toy Story Mania to use the fast passes from earlier. I sat out and some of the group used the FPs from earlier to ride TSM. I love the queue at WDW but not enough to stand in an 80 minute stand-by line for a ride that is otherwise identical to the ride in Anaheim. Go ahead, call me a Muggle. We waited under Luxo Jr's door but he never appeared. I'm sooooooo glad my boys were able to see him in October!! J and C shared their popcorn with the group but it was REALLY salty. I had a PowerAid and water bottle with me hydrating up for the Half and I was very glad to have them!
Next up we walked over the Muppets and through the shops in that area. Then we hiked back over to Tower of Terror. I debated riding Tower. I know that they have that extra effect in Orlando but I really do not do well with the bouncing up and down of the ride. I decided to walk through the queue with my group but not ride. When we arrived in the first "room" we encountered a group of INCREDIBLY rude and obnoxious guests. The others in the group described them as Jersey types. I can't remember what they said. But they were gross. They were loud and they were purposely scaring the young children in the group. Not just the guys either. One of the moms made a comment to her scared little girl. And did I mention that they were LOUD? This continued the rest of the way through the queue. Not charming. Not amusing. Just annoying and rude. Our group asked for the front row of their elevator and they got it. The Jersey group thought they were going to sit in the front row and had to be directed to sit in their other rows. I went downstairs and waited for the rest of the group. I knew they were coming when I saw their picture show up on one of the television screens. It was a GREAT shot.
We hung out near TOT for awhile waiting for our Rock & Roller Coaster FPs to come due. Swanie and I got some pretzels to share with the group. Another J and his wife arrived at DHS and we waited for them to join us. It was nice to sit and socialize for awhile. Finally it was time to ride RNR.
In October, I hated this ride. To refresh... Very early in our trip, I lost my regular glasses at MK while wearing my prescription sunglasses. Fortunately, for some reason that still baffles me, I had tossed my "old yucky pair" of glasses into my suitcase at the very last minute. I had forgotten about the incredible start to RNR and immediately started to panic that my glasses would fall off. I spent a good deal of the ride trying to get them off my face and secure in my hands. When the ride finished, I felt very ill. That said, I had a hunch that I would have been fine had I taken off my glasses before the ride started. I was determined to test my theory.
I love the FP at RNR because it really IS FP. It doesn't seem to be like other FP's that still have a bit of a line even with the pass. We quickly found ourselves in Aerosmith's recording studio and then in the big stretch limo. Swanie sat next to me. She'd held C's hand on TOT because C hates TOT so she agreed to hold my hand on RNR. As I took off my glasses, swanie reminded me to breathe during the ride, which I very much appreciated. I always forget that. The traffic jam cleared and we took OFF. At the end of the ride, I cheered. I'd conquered RNR. I still didn't feel terrific but I didn't feel horrible. I proved my theory.
With our mission complete and our ADR time for dinner rapidly approaching, swanie, J, C, "BK" and I headed back to the rental car to Kidani Village. We had an ADR for I THINK it was 4 but, much like the night before, we wanted to add two more so we needed to arrive early. We walked from our room to Jambo House for BOMA! This time, swanie didn't need to hug anyone. The nice thing about Boma is that it's a pretty large space. We easily added two more to our ADR and "T" met us in time to be seated for dinner. We found lots of carbs and loaded up. The company was amazing. A-maz-ing. Endurance athletes are just an incredible bunch of people. Each person I've met during this journey has been intelligent and funny and has had something inspiring to share.
But. We had to get up REALLY EARLY the next morning. So once dinner was over, we walked back to our room and J and C drove BK and T back to their resorts.
Swanie and I started to lay out our gear. The big question of the weekend for everyone was 'What are we going to wear?' Everyone brought a few options from which to choose. The weather forecast was better than the WDW Half in January: We did not need to expect sleet. But. We were looking at "feels like high 30s" for the race start.
I'm from Southern California.
I train on a treadmill in my temperature controlled bedroom.
I don't DO high 30s.

Oh, shoot, I forgot a funny but significant detail for a Disney Travel Message Board:
The restaurants of the Animal Kingdom Lodge have this butternut squash soup that is tasty. Swanie loves her some Butternut Squash soup. Mara, the counter service restaurant, serves it daily. Boma serves it in rotation. In other words: It's not always available at Boma. But. If you want some Butternut Squash soup, you can ask your server for some and he/she will get some for you.
When we were on the buffet line getting our food, I was with T when I came to the soup area and realized that the Butternut Squash soup wasn't there that night. I told her: "Oh, we'll get some. Swanie will ask for it. She probably won't have to hug the server but bet me we get Butternut Squash soup." I can't remember what T said but it was witty.
Sure enough, back at the table, our server came by to check how we wer doing, swanie did her thang and we ended up with six bowls of Butternut Squash soup. ;)

Day 4: Sunday, March 7, 2010 - Part One: 2010 Princess Half Marathon! (It was a long day, what can I say?)
The alarm went off at 3:00 am.
3:00 in the morning.
The middle.of.the.night.
I'd taken my shower the night before because I didn't want to have to get up as early. So much for that, I was awake and couldn't go back to sleep anyway. I poured myself some nonfat milk, did my hair in a pony tail and started to get dressed. I'm just going to say it: I looked like a freak. I had my pink compression sleeves with capri length running pants, a plumish colored long-sleeve Reebok shirt and a red cap J loaned me from the running board. (I had thought they might reorder hats before Princess. I thought wrong. Fortunately, J had three caps so she let me keep the cap and I'm buying a new one for her on the next order.) I had my ipod armband and earphones and my Garmin Forerunner 305 over a sweat band because I sweat under it and it gets really uncomfortable without the sweatband. In one of my Spibelt pouches I put my ID and room key and I put my Shot Bloks, lip balm and inhaler in the other pouch. I had a throw-away zippered sweatshirt and I grabbed a water bottle. I ate my Luna bar with my milk.
We left shortly after 4.
And it was coooooooold.
We got to the Epcot parking lot and made our way to the E-K tent where we met up with "the others." Everyone was very supportive and encouraging. C had handed swanie a really long garbage bag to wear over herself to warm up. We admired the costumes of those who dressed up. And tried not to cry when the soldier about to be deployed showed up in his fatigues and army boots with a sign on his back that said "Running for my Injured Princess". Awwwwwww. After awhile, we walked through the bag drop tent where only those with numbers could go, stopped at the porta potties and headed to the corrals. Passing between the trees the temperature dropped even more. Brrrrrrrr. Most of the group was assigned to the A & B corrals so they all wished me luck and told me to BEAT J3.
The J3 Story:
The day before, swanie received a text message that another member of the board, J3, had finished a marathon in 3:28. He was disappointed that he didn't "BQ" (Qualify for the Boston Marathon) but happy with his time. To BQ for his age category, he'd have to finish in 3:20.
I looked at swanie et al and said: "J3 can finish a marathon faster than I finish a half." Now, you have to know that they all laughed but these people, who ALL finish faster than I do, could not be more gracious about my time in a half if they tried. They are so freaking supportive it's not funny. If I dare to make a comment about being a wanna-be or something, they're the FIRST ones to stop me. It doesn't matter what my time is, I'm an Endurance Athlete.
Well I looked at them and told them that I had a new goal for the Princess: To beat J3.
As we parted ways, everyone was telling me to go Beat J3!
I actually passed my corral. I thought the "C" marked the FRONT of the Corral, not the BACK of the corral, so I kept going. It turned out I went to the D Corral. Oops. So I hiked back to the C Corral. I probably would not have minded but my hip was already bothering me and making me a tad anxious. The nice thing about being alone, though was that it was easier to wander among the groups already in the Corral, and get further towards the front of the corral. I figured I needed as much cushion as I could possibly get. If I did not maintain a 16-minute pace, Disney could close the course behind me. The 3-hour-30-minute window opened at the moment that the LAST runner crossed the start line. So the further forward I started, the bigger my cushion could be.
The crowd mostly talked through the National Anthem, although in fairness, it was really hard to hear, but they quieted down towards the end. We took our turn getting to the starting line, the Fairy Godmother counted down our Corral, the fireworks went off and we were on our way. I'd chatted a bit with some of the women around me but once our corral got to the front, the took off ahead of me. My ipod wasn't working right because my earphones weren't plugged in all the way so for the first half mile or so, I was futzing around with that. Once I had that figured out, I was OFF.
And BOY, was I OFF. I love my Garmin. I love love love being able to look down and monitor my pace!! That first mile was a 13 to 14 minute pace!! I couldn't believe it! My ipod music was pumping me up and I was going! I still had my water bottle and that was good because my throat was really dry and we hadn't quite hit the first water stop yet. I got out my first pack of shot bloks and took one with a swig of water. I learned long ago that by the time I don't feel well, it's too late. I like to take about one Shot Blok per mile or per water stop, sometimes two. I learned 100 calories per 45 minutes or 4-miles or so.
And so it went. I was keeping about a 15-minute pace. Each time I passed a mile marker and saw the time, I teared up. There were characters and pirates and princes but I left my camera in the room. I didn't want to lose time stopping for photos - I wanted to keep going. When we came up to the Magic Kingdom entrance, I really did wish I'd had my camera. That was really cool to walk under the big MK sign. I remembered in October when swanie had told me that it was IMPOSSIBLE to walk from the parking lot to the Magic Kingdom and all I could think of was "Swanie lied! I'm WALKING to the Magic Kingdom." Along that area, I tossed my throwaway sweatshirt to the side of the road. (Disney collects these and donates them to charities.) As we went under that little canal "bridge" I thought of how Drince88 holds her breath when she's in a bus under that bridge because she's going under water. I didn't hold my breath but I thought "I'm walking under water..." On the incline just after that bridge I thought a lot of other things but I'm not allowed to use those words here...
Soon we were backstage at MK and entering Main Street. It was odd because we were moving so fast and I was remembering "This isn't Disneyland. It looks different. Don't expect it to look like Disneyland." We turned right through Tomorrowland and left into Fantasyland towards the Castle. As we approached the castle, I remembered pictures I've seen of Stan4dSteph coming out of the Castle in her events. I remembered that the photographer shot from the "right" side of the road. We were pretty congested and I really wanted a castle shot, so I got to the right, found the photographer and put up my thumbs hoping he'd get me in a shot. He did. :)
One of the message board members was outside the castle to take pictures of us, so I tried to look for him but he had taken off his red jacket. I was looking for RED but didn't see it. And so I kept going through Frontierland. We exited MK and headed out towards the Grand Floridian, the Wedding Pavillion there, the Golf Courses and Shades of Green. I have to say that these spots were rather narrow. They coned off half of the road so that cars could use the other half. That got a tad tight. Around this point, I struck up a conversation with a woman who I'd been playing "leap frog" with - I'd pass her, she'd pass me. I could see that she had a Disneyland Half shirt on her base layer so we chatted for a bit about Disneyland and WDW before she needed to run again.
I was surprised that they still had plenty of Cliff Shots when I got to the fuel spot but I didn't take any. Part of me wished I had just to have one to try later, but I'm really not much of a gel shot person. I like my Shot Bloks. At the water stops, I'd try to wait to get the water from one of the last volunteers because it always seems that everyone grabs drinks from the first people leaving the people in the back hanging. And I always always say thank you to all the volunteers. There weren't as many bands and groups as they have at Disneyland but there were a lot more characters along the way since everything was on-property. (Not that I could stop for character pictures...)
As I approached the cloverleaf to the road back to Epcot, I saw the people on the road up above me as I passed down below. Then I had a text on my cell. Doc had been sleeping with his iPhone and my 15K split had come through. He could see that my time was rocking and sent a very sweet text. I got all happy and picked up my pace just in time to see.... THE GREEN ARMY MEN!!! My kids are HUGE Pixar buffs, especially Toy Story - so my text and my Toy Story characters happened all at once. It was like my guys were there with me to get me going. I booked it around that cloverleaf but then near the top I hit the INCLINE.
O.M.G. Those inclines did me in. Up to that point I had started thinking, "If I can keep this pace, I can not only BEAT J3, I could BQ!!!!!" I'd started to slow a bit on the World Drive but the inclines back towards Epcot were just doing me in. The one nice thing was that the opposite traffic was passing us and occasionally honking their horns and waving. It was nice. But it wasn't enough to make up for those darn inclines on the overpasses!!
I kept pushing and pushing. As I approached the 11th and 12th miles and Epcot, I was trying to figure out if I could possibly push myself hard enough to still BQ. I was really waddling hard with my hip in pain. I was occasionally tearing up because I knew that no matter what, even if I didn't BQ, even if I didn't beat J3, I was GOING to finish this event. Even if I had to slooooooow way down, there were still plenty of people behind me. I could almost crawl to the finish line and still beat the last person over the start. But I pushed. I really pushed.
I skipped the last water spot. I had PLENTY of water. And I kicked it up. At one point I looked down and I was doing an 8-minute pace (not that I kept it up for long!) I passed the right side of the Spaceship Earth ball, and through the center of Future World. They had spots open up for guests to cross the course and I thought that if someone crossed right in front of me, I was going to be SERIOUSLY pissy. I was on a MISSION. I did NOT want to slow down. I got to the turnaround spot at World Showcase and kept going. It was getting close to J3's time. Past the other side of Spaceship Earth, I could hear the choir up ahead. I passed the choir and down the last stretch through the bleachers. The announcer never did say my name but that was ok. I put my hands up and crossed the finish line, then I pulled my washcloth out (I keep a washcloth under to top strap of my sports bra. It's very handy dandy.) I put my cloth up to my face and just cried and cried. I'd DONE it.
And at 3:25, I'd BEATEN J3!!!!
The first volunteer I saw with medals was HANDING them to the finishers.
HANDING THEM.
HANDING-THEM-OVER.
UHM, NO. That's not what I wanted. Do not HAND me a medal. I looked around to see which volunteers were PLACING the medals over people's heads. I saw a gentleman toward the back and headed over towards him. I cried as he placed my medal around my neck. I had called J and swanie around mile 12 and J called back to see where I was. As I stood in line for my finishing line photo, swanie called and told me where she was by the fence. I went over, she took a picture of me and gave me a big hug. She advised me that the bag pick-up lines were REALLY long and I might want to wait to get mine later. I grabbed a banana, they handed me a fruit cup. I think I grabbed a mini Luna bar but I think I must've dropped it because I never saw it again. I got a water bottle and a blue PowerAid.
Back at the E-K tent, someone had grabbed two blankets that runners had left at the side of the road and created a "picnic" like area. I sat down to eat my banana on a bench because my calves were cramping up. T came over to check on me and told me how proud she was of me. Awww. These Endurance Athletes, I'm telling you, this community is just too awesome. She suggested that the cramping may have been due to the cold weather. I was one of the last to come in from the group but there were still a few behind me. My roommates wanted to get going so I went to get my bag. The Security Guard said I couldn't go back for it even though the entrance to the tent was right there. It made no sense but he was insistent that he was given STRICT instructions and I could NOT enter until EVERYONE had exited from the other side. I was trying to figure out if I could somehow try another entrance (even though they were labelled alphabetically). I was literally 10 feet away from the bag tables, or less. I asked him if I could give him my number, could HE pick it up for me? He could watch me go get it and come out again? Nope. As I walked away trying to figure out how much longer would I have to wait, the Security Guard called me back and nodded over to the table to go get my bag. In a very short time I had my bag back and I thanked him on my way out again.
I'd texted mkraemer to see if we might get together but she'd gotten off the course and was quickly on a bus back to her room.
I was waddling. I was in pain. But I'd done it. I'd finished. I didn't BQ, but I beat J3. I bettered my time by about 5 minutes over my Disneyland Half in September.
My roommates and I poured our bodies into the rental car and headed back to our room. And to our shower.

Yea! You beat J3!
And I don't remember if it was my walking coach or something I read from "The Penguin" -but you A-are getting to enjoy the course more if you're going slower. B-your $/minute is better. and C- you're still keeping your heart rate way up there AND for longer than those fast runners are doing! You're not burning any more calories, but you're getting more time in with an elevated heartrate!
Is J3 in the same age group/sex as you? Because if he/she is younger, or if he's a he, then you still might have BQ'd!

Ooooh. I hadn't thought about the gender thing...
So I checked it out... For my age and gender, I qualified but my age and gender's qualifying times would not have been at all a challenge for me. ;)
I'm technically in a younger category (for at least the next 6 months and 1 day, :ahem: ) than J3, though. I don't think I could beat the male BQ time for my correct age category. ;)

It was NOT easy. Between the emotions of the race plus G's signs and everything going on, I had to really steel myself, frankly. And I'm not even telling all the stories. We went through some roller coasters of emotions all weekend. I'm not kidding when I say how amazing these athletes are.

Sunday, March 7, 2010 - Part Two
Going back, once again, to my previous trip to Walt Disney World, you may or may not recall that I lost my really great pair of eyeglasses on our very first day in the parks. I came home and bought a new pair because my old ugly pair was driving me nuts. My optician is brilliant and she helped me find another cute pair. At the end of the Half Marathon, after we got our bodies into the rental car, I took off my prescription sunglasses and pulled out my regular eyeglasses and a glasses wipe only to find that during the race, I had managed to wear a really nasty scratch into the center of the left lens.
The next time I go to WDW, I'm going to buy the cheapest glasses I can find anywhere and taking THOSE.

I just don't GET IT.
So, anyway, back at our room we took turns hopping into the shower (HA HA! HOPPING! We took turns carefully stepping into the shower...) while swanie went down to the laundry room to wash her race clothes. I was very pleased that the compression sleeves seemed to do their job and I had no signs of shin splints. I put on my clean pair of compression sleeves just to make sure. This time I was wearing long pants so the lovely purple sleeves were "invisible".
J, C and I were hungry so we went down to Mara for lunch. C felt guilty about driving to Jambo House. Me? Not so much. As we were walking into Jambo House it hit me that I had never drunk my chocolate milk after the race. I'd brought some Luna recovery shake mix with me and forgot all about it. No wonder my stomach was feeling a bit eh. I took my time waddling towards Mara. I had a chicken salad and got a container of zebra domes for my dessert, which I shared with J and C. One very nice benefit of a Half-Marathon is that I had NO GUILT eating anything that day. Anything.
We went back to the room where swanie had finished her shower. We had plans for an early dinner at the Grand Floridian and decided that we may as well hang out there for a little bit ahead of time. We elected to use Disney Transportation and took the bus to MK and the monorail to the Grand Floridian. This was the first time I had ever been to the Grand Floridian. Passing by the area where they served afternoon tea made me sigh a bit. I love "tea". I'll have to get myself back to Walt Disney World sometime and find a girl to have tea with me there. (Or else I may just drag my sons there. There's nothing that says boys can't have tea.) The CM outside the area and I had a lovely little chat while I took pictures of the Mrs. Potts and Chip inlays outside the area. I joked that I was probably not the first person to ever take those pictures. She was very funny about it. I appreciate a CM that will joke around with the guests.
I quickly met up with the rest of my group near the pool bar. The mai tais looked good but I really just wanted to drink a lot of water so I just asked for a cup of water with lemon. A little later I ordered a ginger ale with bitters and lime, a trick I learned from the Napa Rose to prepare a stomach for a large meal. The CM at the pool area was very helpful tracking down chairs from around the pool so that we would have enough at our table. Four more friends eventually joined us for cocktails poolside.
C had told me to bring a couple of safety pins off my event bib and while we sat there, she pinned the ribbon from my Half-Marathon medal to the back of my shirt. If you have one of these beauties already, you may know that the ribbons scratch a bit against the back of your neck. C pinned mine low enough to avoid the scratching while still laying nicely around my neck. Thank GOODNESS. I loved wearing my medal around the resort because Cast Members seemed very tuned into the Half Marathon athletes, congratulating us as they saw us walk by!! :D Let's face it: I eat that stuff up. I worked my tush off, you can bet your bippy I eat up the attention!!!
As we approached our ADR time, we wandered over to 1900 Park Faire and joined up with the rest of our group for dinner there. We had 38 people in all dining together!! The cast members lined us all up for our group picture before dinner. The photographer seemed very good about having us adjust to try to get as many faces as possible into the picture. Then we entered the dining room and descended upon the four 10-top tables in the very center of the room. This was my first time at this restaurant and it was a lovely little dinner buffet. The strawberry soup was awesome and I enjoyed all of the food very much.
That said, the characters rocked hard. Cinderella and Prince Charming graciously posed with Princesses (and Princes!) in our group. Of course, they also posed with the Mickey gnomes. Some of the group also posed for photos with Madame Tremaine and the Stepsisters. The Stepsisters especially seemed to eye the Mickey gnomes with suspicion. But oh, my, we had no idea what was to come. I don't know when the last time was that I laughed so hard. At the appointed time, Cinderella and the Prince came to the center of the room, which is where our tables were, to waltz. Somehow, the Mickey gnome ended up cutting in and Cinderella and the Prince waltzed with Mickey as well. Shortly, they returned him to our table, but Anastasia was NOT going to be upstaged by Cinderella and the Prince. She came to our table, grabbed the Mickey gnome and she and Mickey... Tangoed. For their grand finale, Anastasia had Mickey dip her. Oh yes, she did.
We were peeing our pants laughing.
There was more eating and more dancing until we could eat no more. As we left, the Prince came up to us and said that we were welcome to stay in those four tables for the rest of the evening. He said that we really made the time pass by quickly and we were a lot of fun to have for dinner.
Having charmed the Prince himself, we departed for the Monorail to Magic Kingdom which had Extra Magic Hours that night. I remembered from so many "Sunday Meets" at Disneyland how hard it is to move through parks with large groups of people. It takes forever to decide where to go and then to get everyone there. Eventually, we gathered at Space Mountain. Space was closed for renovations when we visited in October so I had yet to ride the WDW version. Although I do not like the Matterhorn (too rough) nor Space Mountain (makes me ill) in Anaheim, I was very curious to see how Space differed in Orlando, so I got in line. I remember laughing a lot with swanie and T and the others in line. It was a very strange ride. First off, the cars are just... weird. They're small with low sides. Second, there's... no... sound.
Space Mountain had no sound.
No soundtrack.
No music.
Just the sounds of the car on the track and the people in the cars.
It was very strange.
I decided that Space in WDW was a very odd combination of Matterhorn and Space in Anaheim, with no sound. Doc read a message that I had ridden Space for research purposes. He texted me to ask if we had missed anything in October. I answered: Nope. (Although I'm glad I at least got to experience it to know.)
At this point the group bid goodnight to the aforementioned soldier who had run for his injured princess and his bride. He of the "G, Give me your GNOOOOOOMMMME" story. Everyone was misty because he is deploying for a long time. We stood and watched them walk away together.
Pause.
And then we went to Buzz Lightyear.
Yeah, I followed Space at WDW with Buzz at WDW. Not a good night for WDW, was it?
I couldn't pick up my gun and I couldn't figure out the pattern that would let me shoot multiple times and I couldn't hit the targets. I like "our" Buzz much better. Sorry, WDW.
At this point, we split off from the big group which was heading to Haunted Mansion. We watched the fireworks from near the ride that would be called Autopia if we were in Anaheim but I can't remember what it's called at MK. Indy Raceway? That.
I was fading fast. It was getting late and I had been up since 3 am. I was very pleased that my soreness had subsided significantly from the morning. I was walking around pretty well. But boy was I tired. While I really wanted to stay with the group as our time together is rather rare, I had promised myself that I would manage my attitudes. I knew that if I did not return to the room and work on packing, I risked putting myself into a really bad mood. I needed to take care of myself so I said good night and headed out back to the room alone. And I got a few more "Congratulations, Princess"es out of some cast members along the way.
The bus ride back to Kidani Village was the worst of the trip. A family got on the bus and found a group of seats together. Except that no one wanted to sit with the elementary aged son who apparently had an attitude. The mom dropped him off in the empty seat next to me. Well I can tell you why he was in a bad mood: The kid was SICK. The whole way back to the resort I sat turned away from him as he coughed on me. Grrrrrrrr. My legs hurt too much to stand up. :(
Back in the room I turned on the TV just at the end of the John Hughes tribute during the Oscars. I'd forgotten about the Oscars! Not that I would've skipped anything for them but I was bummed I missed the John Hughes tribute. I was a teenager in the 1980's. Some Kind of Wonderful was filmed in my community. I have friends who were extras on it. And yes, I have memorized scenes from The Breakfast Club.
So, anyway. I got as much of my suitcase packed as I could and got dressed for bad. A bit later, the rest of the roommates returned to do the same. I got into bed because I was getting cold but I left my glasses on because I wanted to talk with the roommates and I had a couple of questions on my mind to ask them. Swanie had to be on DME at 4 am so I wanted to say good-bye to her, too. And there were some pictures I wanted off of swanie's and C's SD-cards.
But I don't really remember what happened. I know I did not get my questions asked, nor photos downloaded. I sort of remember swanie's alarm going off in the middle of the night. And I remember J saying to me in the morning "I didn't know you slept with your glasses on, Adrienne?"

Good descriptor of Space Mountain. I usually just say it's the Matterhorn in the dark (it used to have the same cuddle seats as the Matterhorn, even).
So, how DO you get the DL Buzz to shoot multiple times? At WDW, I just press the button mutiple times.
And 38 for dinner?!? Holy crud that's a lot!

I just keep pulling the trigger at DL, no problem. I was pushing the button but it wouldn't keep shooting. I'd get one shot per multiple pushes.
And 38 for dinner?!? Holy crud that's a lot!
LOL. But we CHARMED the PRINCE!!!!! :)
