Coasters do not cause brain injury, study says (http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1046255894199885.xml) - Cleveland Plain Dealer, 2/26/03

QuikQuote: "The risk of brain injury from a roller coaster is not in the rides, but in the riders," said the study released by the Brain Injury Association of America, which examined the issue at the request of lawmakers who are considering regulating amusement parks.
The study said that the rides are designed for safety and that the industry regulates itself with an efficiency that a federal agency probably couldn't match. It said the parks warn pregnant women and people with other medical conditions to avoid their rougher rides.

Gee, I really dislike this Idiot, Mr. Markey.

He orders this study, spending our tax dollars (even though there have been other studies paid for by private groups), and when he get the results....

The legislator who requested the study, Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, will continue his efforts to have the Consumer Product Safety Commission oversee the industry, his spokesman said.
Markey faulted yesterday's report, saying the researchers did not detail their reasoning behind the conclusions.
"It denies other scientists and interested parties the ability to test their own judgments against the work of the panel," Markey said.

The report says everything is fine, and that "the industry regulates itself with an efficiency that a federal agency probably couldn't match.", but what does the congressperson from Massachusetts want to do, IGNORE it!!!

Nope, it isn't the result I wanted, so forget it, I am still going to demand a new federal agency, even though my own report says it isn't needed....

Here is another article...

Congressman to press for federal regulation of amusement parks (http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/5261153.htm) - Knight Ridder Newspapers, 2/26/03

Industry spokesman Bill Powers said no federal agency or oversight committee could care as much for the safety of theme park patrons as the theme park owners and operators.
Robinson said the industry has already launched a voluntary system for collecting ride injury data from its American members and hopes to have that information ready for the public within a year.
"We've now seen the results of four excellent studies that are very scientific and factual and show there is not a public health risk in this industry," Robinson said. "On the contrary, it's safe and there is no issue. It's time to move on to things that are more important."
