View Full Version : Walt Disney World Rock n Roller coaster for kids?
Thorman 10-09-2009, 07:13 AM Hey, m 10 yr old daughter has been on all the Disneyland rides though has not done California Screaming in DCA.
She loves Matterhorn, Space Mtn and Tower of Terror.
This will be our first trip to D'World.
I would love her to try Rock N Rolla Coaster. Are there any big drops? What experiences have your kids had on this ride. She can handle Space Mtn because there are no real big drops and in fact loved it. I do know that Rock N Rolla Coaster has some loops et al but I think she can handle it.
Thoughts?
Drince88 10-09-2009, 07:16 AM I'm sure those that analyze rollercoasters will disaree with me, but I really feel that Rock n Rollercoaster and California Screamin' are the same 'level' of coaster, with the exception that CS is outdoors and RnR is indoors. I think there's more inversions on RnR (CS just has the one, I believe).
If she's hesitant to go on CS, I'd recommend against RnR.
pixar 10-09-2009, 07:22 AM It accelerates to speed like California Screamin', but it doesn't go as high, so no big drops. If she's concerned about any free-falling feeling, just ask for a car closer to the front of the coaster.
SuefromRI 10-09-2009, 07:22 AM RNR has the same fast take off as CS, but I think it is faster. It has many loops and hills and goes so fast I don't think of them as "drops". Because it is in the dark you can't see the loops and drops so that helps some people. I love CS because it has the feel of the old rollercoasters with the smoothness of modern technology. RNR has the shoulder harness which feels scary to me and with the speed I feel like my head bangs from side to side more, giving me a headache sometimes, especially if riden multiple times. Still I ride it every trip, but would not suggest it to someone afraid of CS. My kids love it though, but they love all coasters as soon as they are tall enough, even the extreme ones at Magic Mountain and Islands of Adventure.
Greg in TN 10-09-2009, 07:36 AM As far as experiences my kids have had on this ride, our daughter was 8 during our last trip, and this was the first time she was tall enough to ride RnR. She'd been preparing for this trip, well, since our PREVIOUS trip, when she wasn't tall enough. My wife said when she went for her last check up, and the nurse measured her and said she was taller than 48", she was thrilled, and said, "Yessss!!! Rock-n-rollercoaster !!!"
When we got there, she measured herself again vs. the measuring stick @ the ride, and indeed was very happy to be tall enough. We caught the ride @ a pretty good time, because with FPs and shorter lines, we rode it about 4 times in a row. She would have ridden it even more, but the park closed.
She absolutely loved it !! :D
oregontraveler 10-09-2009, 07:46 AM I agree that RnR and CS are similar. But since the daughter has never been on CS, here are some comparisons from rcdb.com
RnR
initial launch is 0 to 57 mph in 2.8 seconds
top speed 57 mph
3 inversions including a rollover & corkscrew
track length 3,403 feet
highest drop is 80 feet
time is 1:22
CS
launch is 0 to 55 mph in 4 seconds
top speed is 55 mph
1 inversion, loop
track is 6,072 feet
highest drop is 108 feet
time is 2:36
I was only able to ride RnR once on my last trip, line got too long at night.
The most obvious difference was the track length, the ride was way shorter.
I liked the sudden drops being in the dark and it seemed fairly smooth.
I would see if she can handle Expedition Everest first, another dark coaster.
No inversions, but a higher lift hill that's out in the open. There's a great article from yesterday talking about kid's fears and the EE lift hill was mentioned.
dngnb8 10-16-2009, 02:13 PM CS and RnR are comparable.
The difference is Aerosmith is blasting baybee
If she can handle CS, RnR will be fine.

psst, he said she won't ride CS;)
Thorman 10-17-2009, 07:38 AM Though that was almost a year ago and how one month away from turning 11..It's time for her to do it!!!On a scale of 1 to 10 she is at a 8.5 for thinking she will do Rock n rolla coaster....Interesting stuff!!
psst, he said she won't ride CS;)
jerseygirl407 10-17-2009, 11:39 AM I think she'll be fine if she handles those other rides.....my kids all roade by the time they were 8 & my 7 y/o niece just went on for the first time.
Someone else mentioned their head bangs around a lot -- I think on this and on EE you need to hold your head back against the seat and that helps stop you from feeling like you're getting whipped around. ALso, for some reason, I HATE riding in the rear cars on this ride.....I may be crazy but it always feels like you're really getting whipped around back there. Now we usually wait & sit in the front row -- so cool up there!!:)
My little cousin rode CS last summer and absolutely hated it. In the past she has said that she wants to ride RnR when we go in July. The only problem is non of us have ever rode it so I am not sure if she can handle it.She still says she wants to ride it but Im not sure. Our plan is to ride it first and give her our views of the ride and let her decide.

That's because you are. Its like the old crack/snap the whip game where everyone would hold hands and spin the person at the end would really get to moving.
adriennek 10-24-2009, 07:12 PM Ok. So. I rode it last week for the first time. Somewhere along the way, I knew about the launch and the loop. I'm sure of it. But. I had forgotten about these things and I was totally caught off-guard and it made it really hard for me to enjoy the ride. My son felt the same way. I couldn't go on it again but he did with my husband and the Rider Switch pass - he said the second time was better.
Based on what has worked for me with my kids and my own experience, my personal opinion is: Let her go on it, but I think it would be a favor to let her know ahead of time what's coming.
Oh, and if she wears glasses, tell her to take them off. Part of my problem was that I panicked mine were going to fall off and I had trouble getting to them to take them off after the ride started.

thymeandplace 10-25-2009, 06:04 AM As an 18 yer old who has been on both, California Screamin' is by far the scarier rollercoaster. I absolutely loved Rock'n'Roller Coaster and rode it about 4 times on our last trip to DW but I will not ride California Screamin' ever again. It was so frightening there was no fun to it at all.
Part of the lack of scare factor for RnR is that it is inside and done in a Disney dark ride fashion with blacklight paints and a fun comical sense of humor. It also has a nice audiotrack of Aerosmith which helps to keep the mood much calmer (well, calmer than having a track of screaming). My six year old brother who was just barely tall enough to ride it last time absolutely loved every second and rode a total of six times, and he too broke down on CS.
My opinion is to let her go on RnR, even though she is afraid of California Screamin' because it just isn't as visually frightening.
