I rode it twice yesterday, and I have to say, I think the 4th row is the best. It's the first row of the second car. The front row was good for the lift effect, but you can still see it pretty clearly from further back, and some of the other effects end up a little behind you, and you don't get to see them fully. So, I would choose the middle of the car next time.

I don't think they generally let you choose what row you want to be in. For quick loading, they pretty much just assign you. It doesn't hurt to ask, but if the CM can't accommodate, I don't think people should make a fuss about it.

I had no problem requesting the front row. They CM just asked us to stand to the side for the next load cycle. I think if they can accommodate you they will, I understand they get busy, but the CM that was loading us was on top of his game, with a lot of things going on. There was a group already standing behind the loading area, and without missing a beat, he got everyone to where they needed to be.

There is a great ride video at KTLA.com from this morning (7 AM hour).

And yes, she shouldn't have ridden, since she is about 6 month pregnant, but she did have a really fun time.

I have to agree! I had an excellent view in the 4th row as did my daughter who is nine. We absolutely loved it! We felt it was worth the 60+ minute wait and can't wait to do it again. I have to say that it felt very "un-Disney" like something I would see somewhere else. VERY COOL!!!

LOL @ the end and the "snot coming out of her nose" comment.

I think you have to remember this is an OVERLAY, not a complete revamp of the ride. Some folks expectations are, IMO, unrealistically high. There is only so much Disney can do with a rollercoaster! Remember "Rockin' Space Mountain" was just a new soundtrack and some colored lights? It's really about the best Disney could do.
I think we should appreciate any change for any given season... they didn't have to do it, and frankly very few fans were asking for it... and the old ride will be back shortly anyway.
For what it is, I think it's great. But it just adds a new twist to a classic ride, not changing it completely!
I think where you sit must be vitally important.
I rode it twice yesterday, and I have to say, I think the 4th row is the best. It's the first row of the second car.The cast member who boarded us during the media event on Friday morning said that the effects are timed to hit the first row of the second car, and suggested that we change rows before we launched.

Stopped by Disneyland "briefly" after a play yesterday hoping to ride Space again -- wow! Disneyland was surprisingly crowded for a school night!
We ended up sticking aound for the fireworks. The Main Street crowd after the fireworks was as wall-to-wall as during the holidays. I didn't expect that for a non-holiday Sunday night.
From the time we arrived (around 5:30) until we left at 10, Space was at least a 100 minute wait, so we didn't ride. We did, however, stand outside Space for half an hour watching the effects on the building (along with a lot of other people). Wow! Very cool.
I'd call the Halloween promotion a success!

I sat in the front seat by myself on Saturday morning. Wasn't impressed with the special effects, but maybe being in the front I moved past them too fast. And by too fast...
Holy cwap. I kept thinking, "my this ride is fast, i don't remember it being that fast before"
So the effects didn't make a difference to me, but I liked the speed and the music

i wonder if that is due in part to looking around at the effects. if you stare straight down the path in the old model you anticipate the turns and knwo what's coming - and that makes it seem slower. If you're not focusing there anymore it may seem like turns come up quicker and you get whipped around the turn.

This is sadly true and something I hadn't realized in my teens/early twenties. I went to Disneyland on a rainy weekday when they were loading people through the handicapped entrance. And because there was no line we went on Space Mountain about 12-15 times in a row - only getting off to loop around the inside of the building before getting on again. Go on it that many times in a row and it's easy to memorize the track even when you can't see it. And once you know what's going to happen, it's just a little bit less fun.
We travel with kids usually and skip Space so I haven't been on it in ages. When I went on the Ghost Galaxy and I really enjoyed it ... until the final spins when I realized that I really did still have the flight path memorized. :)
My two main thoughts: One: we were * this * close to taking our son to Space Mountain (regular version) right before it went down for transformation. I'm glad we waited so he's not disappointed that he can't go on it right now because I'm pretty sure he would hate it. Two: we were considering taking him because he's in love with Space at the moment and really enjoy's Wall-E. I couldn't help wonder if after the Ghast Galaxy they will keep any of the projectors and add a Wall-E or Eve to the ride. Because it seems that every ride needs Pixar theming these days. :eyeroll:

dd and I went on it yesterday, it was down when we first got there, around
noon or so. Went back around 3 for fp, they were not available. Went at
6 pm and waited 60 minutes to get on. It was really great and I enjoyed it alot.
Wanted to go it again, but watched the fireworks instead.

i actually enjoy the spooky sounds and light show on the dome of space mountain outside. it now makes for something to look at and fills the land with sound. it's harder to see on a cloudy night because so much light is bouncing off of the clouds - but neat nonetheless.
The way it looks at night and the sounds outside are some of the best parts about this.

I am SO glad you posted this.
When I read the remark about her being pregnant but having fun anyway, I had some very uncharitable thoughts about her priorities. I am greatly relieved to know it wasn't accurate information. (And that I kept my thoughts to myself at the time...:p) Good to know!

^^^ My wife is 23 weeks pregnant right now and we leave for Disneyland on Monday. Our doctor actually told her to ride ANY ride in the park, and he is a GREAT doctor.
We're not going to take his advice though lol... Not worth it to us! :)

Do you think ghost galaxy will be too scary for a first timer to space mountain? My son (almost 4) is finally over 40 inches and we are so excited for new rides he will be able to go on,but I wonder if this would scare him too much. He handles HMH will no problem...

Ummmmm.... so did Darkbeer just ASSUME that she was pregnant? I've had someone assume I was pregnant... and I WASN'T. It was the most insulting thing anyone has ever said to me.

A bit off topic, but I miss Allie on the news here in Utah! It was fun to watch her in that clip! She's great!
