As reported by http://www.monorails.org

the two last operating Mark IV monorails running the Bally's-MGM route in Las Vegas will be retiring Jan 26. These units were purchased from Walt Disney World.

This retirement will be replaced by a fleet of nine new Bombadier MVI (Mark VI-based) monorails come Spring of 2004.

The retirement at the end of the month allows construction workers to rehab and retrofit the stations and existing track for compatibility with the new 4-mile extension up to the Sahara. Further extension to downtown should begin soon, and other extensions to the airport and west side of the Strip are in the planning.

As to what happens with the two retiring units, there are stories going around that the two Mark IV's will be shipped to "the midwest". My guess is perhaps Biloxi MI, where Park Place (Bally's) and MGM have facilities.

The new MVI monorails should be testing on the new track in March of this year.
