How and Where:
Planning
By way of introduction, this is the first time I have plucked up the courage to write a trip report. I have spent many hours reading the musings of Steve Russo, Sheri Niklewski, Arnold van Beverhoudt, Jr., Larry Wilmott, Sue Holland etc and the pleasure these reports have given me and the tool they have given me for picturing Disneyworld in my head is immeasurable. Be it a trip to Boardwalk Villas, a day spent watching Off-Kilter or even time spent in Port St Lucie, these reports help fill the time in between trips and especially so this last year as we did not go to Florida in 2008 as we instead chose to do San Francisco, Disneyland and Las Vegas.
I am always in trip planning mode, mode; this holiday was booked on date August 2008. After this I also booked a trip to Disneyland Paris for December 2008, I have just booked a trip to Washington DC for my son and I and even as I write this I am planning next year’s holiday, thinking about a cruise and stay.
Anyway back to this holiday. We booked a package using a travel agent I found on the internet. I subsequently worked out the price had we booked through Disney /using Expedia /had booked later in the year /took advantage of the buy 4 get 3 free promotion and I feel we got the best price we could have.
We have never stayed on-site before, wWe have stayed in Kissimmee, Lake Buena Vista area twice, and twice in a villa but never on-site. I have always wanted to and even thought about it for our honeymoon before deciding on the Hyatt Grand Cypress (a lovely hotel).
This time the planning was no different from all the other occasions I’ve considered staying on-site, I started off by looking at off-site cheaper accommodation before progressing to a villa, this is normally where I stop looking but this time I priced up staying at Pop Century, this came out the same as a villa and I wasn’t prepared to pay that much for a value resort. Then something took over and I priced Port Orleans French Quarter (POFQ) just a couple hundred pounds more, I went on Intercot to see reviews of the moderate resorts before happening upon a fan-site for Coronado Springs. I was hooked. After spending what seemed like hours weighing the pros and cons of staying at POFQ or CS I finally made my decision and without giving myself time to reconsider I booked CS. A few days later I was looking through my pod casts when I came upon a walk around the lake at CS (I think it was Ricky Brigante), after seeing this (and at the time of writing this preamble – 65 days before departure) I knew I had made the right decision.
We are flying with Virgin Atlantic we have done this once before and they are by far the best carrier we’ve been with.
I have spent hours deliberating whether to hire a car. As we have always stayed off-site a car has always been necessary, as we are now staying in a Disney Hotel not so. I think I have spent hours looking into this and have on many occasions nearly hired a car, one time I saw a $10 a day weekend rate but when you added $30 for a car seat and $25 for Collision Damage Waiver it wasn’t so attractive. A decision was made that we did not need to get a car as we will use magical express from and to the airport, we are not going to Sea World this time and I have convinced myself we can walk to Crossroads from Downtown Disney if needs be to go to DennysDenny’s or a steak house.
We will be using 14 day ultimate park tickets (only available in the UK before departure) and as mentioned already we will be spending pretty much everyday in the parks. Hopefully not all day as I want to use the pool but if the kids decide that they want to go to a park that’s what we’ll do.
Another consideration this time that has never been in the past, past is the use of Extra Magic Hours. Again Intercot, Mouse Planet etc have been scoured looking for advice. There are as many people who steer clear of these as those who use them everyday. I have decided to use them especially in the mornings as we are early-birds and the Magic Kingdom evening EMH as I have always been envious of those people still riding Big Thunder Mountain as I am leaving the park.
As I mentioned above I am writing this 65 days out from the Holiday. I am hoping to write the rest of the report when I get back home and so will make notes as we go. I hope I have not gone into too much detail about the planning of our holiday but once I started I couldn’t stop.
I prefer to read trip reports in one sitting and so will post the report when it has been written in its entirety.
I must say I am looking forward to reading this preamble when I get back.
Day -3 – Tuesday 12 May 2009
I changed my mind and have now decided to hire a car, car; I have hired a car with Budget, picking up at the Doubletree Suites on Hotel Plaza Boulevard on Monday 17 May. The cost for 10 days is £190 around $285 this includes all insurances CDW, SLI etc.
Day 1 – Friday 15 May 2009
The plan:
Our flight is at 13:10 from Manchester England to Orlando arriving in Orlando at 17:00. Magical Express to Coronado Springs, food then bed.
The Actual:
Check in at Manchester airport is easy and we are done about 10 minutes after arriving, the flight departed on time and I must say this is probably one of the easiest flights to Orlando I have ever had. I watched Slum Dog Millionaire and Valkyrie, the kids watched a couple of films, slept, read and played games, before we knew it we were landing in sunny Florida.
Immigration was fairly quick about 20 minutes and our luggage was waiting on the carrousel however what followed was an absolute nightmare.
When booking the holiday as we were staying on-site we decided to use Disney Magical Express however a couple months after booking it was announced they would not collect bags from terminal A. I didn’t think this would be too much of a problem, how I was wrong.
We had to go to Level 1 terminal A to collect our bags, get a lift back up to level 2 walk across the main terminal area before going down to level 1 terminal B. Now whilst this does not sound too problematic we had 3 cases, a child’s car seat, 2 children plus our carry on luggage and a stroller, transporting this all the way across the airport was not easy.
Nonetheless DME check-in was quick and we were on a bus, which did not move for almost 45 minutes, during which time my daughter decided she needed to use a toilet, and that she wanted to go home.
I was not impressed and did not think this was either magical or very express like.
We finally arrived at Coronado Springs at 8pm almost 3 hours after landing at MCO, check-in was quick and efficient we were given room 4265 in Casitas, a renovated room, with a view of Lago Dorado and El Centro.
We decided to go to Pepper Market before going to the room and our initial impression was not good as the food choice neither inspired nor appealed, however we were very tired and just ordered a pizza slice and chicken strips for the kids.
On collecting our luggage we were taken to our room on a buggy via all the sites of the resort. I like the look of the resort andresort and think I have made a good choice, choice; the room is nice, bigger than I anticipated however there is not enough clothes storage.
Vicki and Emily went to bed pretty much on entering the room whilst Josh and I went for a walk around the lake, 7 minutes to the Dig site and 7 minutes to El Centro. I bought a bottle of Corona and drank whilst walking to the room, the weather was warm and I think I have found a new activity for each evening.
Josh and I got into bed at 9.20.
Day 2- Saturday 16 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Character breakfast at Cape May Café - Epcot
Afternoon: Back to pool
Evening: Extra Magic Hours at Epcot
The Actual:
We all arose around 4.30 – 5.00, it is really 9.30 – 10.00 and our bodies don’t realise we are not home at the moment. We unpacked, showered and went for the bus for breakfast. As it is Extra Magic Hours at Disney Studios we got the bus there, one showed after a couple of minutes, a nice first experience of Disney buses. I needed to collect my 14 day passes at a park ticket booth and so as there was no queue I decided to get them from the Studios. However when I got to the window I was informed I needed photo identification, my wallet was with Vicki who was putting sun cream on the kids before the security station. A quick run across and back, where the window I had first gone to was now closed and another guest was buying admission. aAfter what seemed like 10 minutes I finally got to the window and had my tickets in moments.
Our priority seating reservation was for 8am and it was now around 7.40, we thought about getting the boat but as one was not there we decided to walk. It was warm and sunny, a bit too warm for in the words of my son “such a long walk”, if he is struggling now wait until we have been walking around World Showcase for a couple of hours.
We arrived at the Beach Club just after 8am and went to the registration desk, after a 10 minute wait we were seated just in front or is it behind the sandcastle.
Cape May café was the first character meal that Vicki and I did on our first visit in August 1997, we have been back on a few occasions with other family members and of course our children all these years later, however on the last couple of times I have been less than impressed. The character interaction seems rushed, characters seem to regularly miss tables and the overall experience was not what we remember from that first visit.
This was the last chance saloon for the Cape May café and unfortunately it did not pass. I just felt we had to wait too long to see the characters and when they did show, with the exception of Donald who coloured with Josh and Emily it was a quick photo and then goodbye. Even though it did not seem that busy a few guests were letting their kids run up to the characters and a couple of diners complained to the character handlers over the fact that Goofy /Minnie did not show.
Hopefully our later character meals will be better.
When we went to get them out this morning, we discovered that Emily’s TinkerbellTinkerbelle sunglasses had broken in transit and so what must be an indication of thing to come we spent money in the shops, the World Traveller Shop to be exact. Emily chose a pair of Jasmine glasses, glasses; however she was adamant that she wanted a boy’s hat like Josh. As Josh was wearing his San Francisco Giants cap (bought at the game we went to last year against the White Sox), she was not going to get one like that and so made do with a red Mickey hat.
After making our first purchase of the trip we decided that finally after being up for almost 5 hours we would do some rides.
Vicki and Emily stopped at one of the play areas on the left side of the park walking away from Canada, Josh and I made our way to the Land pavilion where we got fast passes for Soarin’ before walking across to Test Track, we walked straight on without watching the pre-show a total wait of about 4 minutes. I love Test Track the simplicity of the ride added to the “speed” at the end is great.
As Emily had already spent some of her holiday money, they both had $145 made up of money for being “good” during the 20 weeks prior to the holiday added to spends given to them by grandparents and my sister, Josh also wanted to spend. He bought a red corvette and a pin badge, the first of many to be bought in the next 14 days.
After meeting up with Vicki we rode Nemo, an instant hit with Emily, watched the dolphins before using our fast passes for Soarin, obtaining a switch pass to be used this evening on our return.
Soarin is my favourite ride in the “World”, the Patrick (chief flight attendant) pre-show, the music the smells the feeling of actually floating over the scenes below is amazing. As I type this I have the music going through my head, the fact that when flying over Disneyland Josh exclaimed “been there” was even better.
We left the park, again getting a bus fairly promptly, and went straight to the pool where Josh rode the Jaguar slide numerous times and on the way back to the room Emily spent time in the Play area.
My initial impressions of the hotel are outstanding, the theming, the walk around Lago Dorado and the room are all top notch.
After showers we went back to Epcot at around 3.30 where we rode Space Ship Earth, Soarin (Josh and I), Nemo (Vicki and Emily) followed by a walk around world showcase. We obtained a mission pass for Kim Possible in Norway before eating at the Liberty Tavern.
Josh and I completed our first mission in Norway and my initial impression of this new attraction is wholly positive, after saving the world Josh and Vicki took part in the Mexico mission whilst I waited with a now sleeping Emily. I sat down outside the Mexico pavilion sharing the bench with a couple of young girls who had obviously been for the princess meal and been made over before hand. This was the first of many “sights” of Bibidi Boutique make-overs and all I can say is Emily will not be getting one soon they looked more likely to go out clubbing than to a fairytale ball. I was not impressed.
I did however enjoy sitting down and people watching, I really feel like I’m on holiday.
When Josh and Vicki finished their mission in Mexico we made our way to find a spot to watch Illuminations. At 8.15 we ended up just to the left of the Friendship boat dock at International Gateway. I can’t remember having watched Illuminations from this spot before as we normally stake a place out on the bridge between the UK and France.
It was loud and smelly as the pyrotechnics seemed to be flying almost over our heads, I’m not sure I like this spot as much as our usual spot and so I expect we will return there later during our trip.
I was really looking forward to Illuminations as along with Wishes these were the things I was looking forward to the most this trip, the music and fireworks mix perfectly and I almost conduct them as I am watching. People standing by me must think I am crazy.
We made our way to the bus and after virtually no wait we were all in bed by 10.30.
Thoughts on the day
Cape May is now consigned to the annals of the past, we have some really good photos of Josh here from his first visit and I will always have those memories however I do not think they will be added to in the future. We should have gone into the studios and got breakfast at Starring Rolls after riding Midway Mania.
However I do think I would like to stay in this area sometime in the future I do like the idea of being able to walk into Epcot whenever the urge takes and I do love the atmosphere to be found in the Bboardwalk /Yacht and Beach Club area.
Day 3- Sunday 17 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Magic Kingdom
Afternoon: Back to pool
Evening: Extra Magic Hours at Magic Kingdom
The Actual:
We were up around 6.45, I walked to El Centro for breakfast, croissants and muffins and whilst everyone ate breakfast I sorted out the finances.
We arrived at Magic Kingdom in time for the official opening, the microphone didn’t seem to be working and so I am not completely sure who came to make the introductions as it was a lady and not the mayor.
This is a fantastic way to start any day in the Magic Kingdom, and an even better way to kick off ana holiday, I know this is our second day but I like to think I have two “first” days just as I have two “last” days. (This will be explained later)
After being welcomed to the Magic Kingdom we made our way down Main St. Vicki and Joshua were going to ride Splash Mountain whilst I got fast passes for Big Thunder Mountain.
I managed to video their drop, Vicki with her eyes closed and attempting to avoid the inevitable water.
After their visit to the Briar Patch we made our way to Fantasy Land where we rode Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh and then the Tommorrowland Speedway before catching the Castle Forecourt stage show. We all seemed to enjoy this however there didn’t seem to be many of us exclaiming “Dreams come true”, nonetheless good won through and Malficient’s Kingdom of Nnightmares did not come to fruition.
Josh and I used the fast passes for BTM and we obtained a switch pass to use later.
As we were opposite Pecos Bill we went there to share a burger where I was impressed to find fried onions on the fixins bar.
We decided to return to the hotel about 12.30 and as far as I can remember I slept until 3pm, however I’m not sure if the others slept also. (Vicki has since informed me that we all slept).
After this refreshing nap we went to the pool for a swim and a splash, Josh again spending most of the time on the slide.
Tonight was EMH in the Magic Kingdom and I was looking forward to this as I had never experienced this before.
On arrival in the park Vicki and the kids rode the Magic Carpets whilst I went to BTM to get fast passes for later, I think they managed 2 rides as the queue was minimal. We all rode the Jungle Cruise which for some unknown reason we always seem to do in semi darkness. Josh and I used the switching pass from earlier on BTM and then we made our way to Pinochio’sPinocchio’s Village Haus for pizza, it wasn’t the best but I didn’t expect the best. I am looking forward to getting the car tomorrow and at least having the option to eat elsewhere.
At this point at around 7pm we exited to discover a recurring event for the rest of our holiday and one which would have a major impact RAIN!.
Despite the rain we managed to get across to the Carrousel and from there across to Buzz Lightyear, however it was getting heavier and we staked a spot next to the Lunching Pad, after 20 or so minutes we decided to make a break and dash across to Buzz, as it was still raining we then ran across to the Carrousel of Progress. Had it not been raining we probably would not have done this “classic” at any time during the trip.
On exiting the attraction we tried to stand under the awning but was moved by a cast member again we managed to get to our earlier dry spot. As it was coming up to 8.15 and the rain did not look like it was going to subside we dashed across to Buzz to ride altogether. Emily then fell asleep whilst waiting for the rain to go off and each of us took turns to run across to Buzz to ride with Josh. I made a mad dash to get ponchos for me, Vicki and Josh, Emily not needing one as she was covered in the pram by the rain cover. Tthis is the first time in 8 visits that I have ever had the need to buy these. It has rained on previous visits most notably our honeymoon in 2001 however I had never seen it rain like this.
We rode Buzz again and as it was pPast 9.30 and Wishes kept being delayed we braved the rain and made our way down to Main Street.
wWe decided to go to bakery and get muffins and stuff whilst waiting for a more definitive announcement, announcement; none however were forthcoming other than the delay announcements. As it was now getting to 10pm and the rain did not look like it was going to stop I made the disappointing decision to go back to the room.
Disappointing as we had not seen Wishes and also I was really looking forward to EMH and riding BTM and possibly even Splash Mountain in the dark.
We arrived back in our room not long after 10.30 and were in bed not much after this.
Thoughts on the day
Overall today was a good day, the weather started out good we managed to do most things we wanted. It is unfortunate that we didn’t get to do Wishes but we have another 12 nights during which time they can be viewed.
We didn’t visit with any characters today but I am certain that will different on future days. I really enjoyed spending time with both Josh and Emily today Emily in the morning whilst waiting for the other 2 to ride Splash and the time spent with Josh on BTM, whilst I enjoy all aspects of these visits to Disneyworld the time spent as a family is the most precious.
Day 4- Monday 18 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Lie in bed - Pool
Afternoon: Pool
Evening: Kids Choice
The Actual:
The original plan for today as detailed above had anticipated a late night in the Magic Kingdom however as a result of the rain last night we decided to set the alarm and go to EMH at Animal Kingdom.
Whilst waiting for the bus a few people were talking about the weather forecast and the possibility of rain for the foreseeable future, we had not seen any forecast and so were oblivious, hopefully if it does rain it moves away quickly.
The first port of call for Josh and I was Expedition Everest, Josh has not ridden this before and he was looking forward to the ride, we followed behind the cast member and we were seated on the first train of the day in the back row.
I’m not a real fan of roller coasters and tend to avoid those with loops etc, whilst there is no loop on EE the drop is quite steep and the section going backwards. Whilst riding I noticed that Josh was slipping in his seat and his head was lopping to the left, I moved my arm to prop him up and in doing so spent the rest of the ride looking at him, this isn’t advisable and I came off the ride feeling nauseous. Josh said he enjoyed the ride but when asked if he wanted to go again he said not, thankfully.
Vicki and Emily had made their way over to EE and were waiting when we exited, we made our way over to Kilimanjaro Safari and I remembered I had not asked Vicki to get fast passes while we rode EE, the standby line was 40 minutes and the fast pass return time was only 45 minutes away, we got passes then went to Tusker House Take-out window for muffins and croissants whilst waiting for our return time. At this point I realised Josh didn’t have his cap and realised we must have left it on EE, I made my way back over there and it was waiting for me in the shop.
After eating breakfast Josh and Emily chose some pins from the cart in front of where we were eating, I gave Josh some money and told him to go by himself and see what he wanted to buy. It felt strange letting him go away on his own, granted we had sight of him, but it did make me realise that at almost 7 years of age he can be given a little independence, the only problem with this is that Emily at almost 3 years of age wants the same level of independence.
We rode the safari and saw a good collection of elephants, rhinos etc, theand the giraffes were out in force and came quite close to the jeep. We found this surprising as it had rained so much the night before.
After the safari it was getting close to 10am and as we were going to collect the hire car at 11.30 we decided to leave. As we exited the park it started to rain. Looks like the rain mentioned earlier at the bus stop came early. It was still raining when we picked up the car from the Double Tree Suites on Hotel Plaza Boulevard.
We went to Subway across from the Crossroads for lunch and I did enjoy not eating chicken strips or burgers. We made a stop on the way home at WalmartWal-Mart for some snacks for the kids and beer for me.
As it was raining on our return to the hotel we didn’t go to the pool, Vicki fell asleep and I watched the Disney channel with Josh and Emily. I think we had got back to the hotel around 2pm and housekeeping had not been to the room. When they eventually came they just took towels and had to sign that I didn’t want the room cleaning. I did want the room to be tiedied but a lot earlier than 3.30 in the afternoon.
We drove to the Magic Kingdom and I must say that arriving at the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) and getting the monorail is a much better way to experience the Magic Kingdom than getting a bus from the hotel. As it was still raining we stayed on the monorail to the Contemporary Resort, I do enjoy walking round the resorts and I was interested to see how the refurbishments that had taken place looked. I went out to the pool area and in the damp, grey conditions it didn’t impress me.
We walked over to the Magic Kingdom and took in the Laugh Floor, Buzz Lightyear, foodand food at the Starlight café.
You may have guessed that it was still raining however we were relatively dry and determined to wait until Wishes as we had yet to see them, and we had been on in the “World” for nearly 4 days. At this point I made a real mistake and decided we could ride the speedway. In doing so I got a wet backside, and this for me is not acceptable, and despite being determined to see Wishes I could not spend the next 2 hours waiting with a wet behind. As such we reluctantly went back to the hotel and were all in bed by 10pm.
Thoughts on the day
The rain is starting to get me down, when you book a holiday in July 2008 for the following May, a time of year when in the past we have seen no rain whatsoever for 2 weeks, you don’t expect such a washout.
We still haven’t seen Wishes, nor spectromagic, I can’t believe we are in our room and moreover in bed each night at little after 10pm.
The rain is now forecast to be with us until Friday.
Day 5- Tuesday 19 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Extra Magic Hours at Epcot
Afternoon: Back to pool
Evening: Kids Choice
The Actual:
I set the wake up call for 6am as we were going to do EMH at Epcot this morning, although on looking out the window I didn’t feel much like going out as it was still raining.
We arrived at Epcot at 8am and went straight to the Land pavilion and I think for the first time ever queued in the standby line for Soarin’ as well as obtaining fast passes for later. This is still one of my most favourite things to do in the “World”,; no matter how many times I ride I still get the same emotions.
We met Vicki and Emily at the Sunshine Seasons and ate breakfast, the cooked breakfast was OK nothing really to set my stomach jumping for joy and I should have just bought a muffin.
Vicki and Emily had already ridden Living with the Land but we all rode it again together. Towards the end of the ride the Behind the Seeds tour is mentioned and as it was still raining I thought it was something we could all do. The cost was $16 adults and $12 children and lasts just over an hour, hour; on further thoughts we decided that Emily would get bored so I bought tickets for the 10.30 tour for just Josh and me.
Vicki and Emily went to see Nemo and friends whilst Josh and I used our Soarin’ fast pass, we had 30 minutes before the tour start time and thought we would easily fit it in but as it happens we had to run to get there for the meeting time, however we still waited a further 5 minutes before our “guide” collected us.
Our tour guide was Fred from Purdue universityUniversity who had just extended his internship at Epcot, writing this report I realise now I should have made better notes.
Our first stop was to see the parasitic wasps that are used for pest control, a very small container had aroungaround 100 of these wasps who lay an egg in their prey which then hatches and eats the fly from within. We were shown how they breed and collect these wasps in order to control a specific pest I cannot for the life of me recall.
We made our way to Fred’s greenhouse from where we could see the rider filled boats on Livingon Living with the Land. Fred went into more detail on Hydroponics and the other planting styles employed In the Land as well as providing more interesting facts on the plants within the Land.
From his greenhouse we made our way through the sand greenhouse where Josh fed the Hualapai fish. At the end of the tour which in reality lasted almost 80 minutes we exited backstage and met Vicki and Emily who had been to Character Funspot.
I would recommend this tour if the rain is falling as it was on our visit and you are looking for something to do. The view from the other side of the boat is interesting but ultimately you see exactly the same as you do from the boat.
We all made our way to world showcase in the rain and Vicki and Josh completed missions in Germany and Japan whilst I watched a now sleeping Emily. Despite the rain there were still a lot of people in Epcot and it was interesting listening to some of the conversations of those people who would occasionally stop by my shelter outside the toilets next door to the German railway. It would seem there were a lot of first time visitors and I did feel sorry for them that their first experiences at Disney World were so affected by the rain, rain; I do hope they get another chance to visit when the weather is better.
We arrived back at our room around 2pm and as it was still raining we decided against going to the pool as the temperature was not shall we say pool friendly.
We planned to go to the Magic Kingdom and tea at Crystal Palace, however Vicki fell asleep with a blinding headache and the rain began to fall even heavier for at least a couple of hours. As a result we decided to go to Pizza Hut and Downtown Disney. It wasn’t raining as we left the hotel but during the course of our meal it again started to rain quite heavily and so whilst we went to the World of Disney store, we made the mistake of telling the kids our plans, we only went to this one shop as I really could not be bothered walking around shops in dripping ponchos.
Thoughts on the day
I am now officially annoyed, whilst it may seem that I have gone on about the weather I have never seen rain like this. It hasn’t “stopped” us going out each day it has sopped me getting into the “moment” and I still haven’t seen Wishes.
If the rain doesn’t stop soon I don’t know what I will do, other than never come back to Florida on this date in the future.
Day 6- 20 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Animal Kingdom
Afternoon: Back to pool
Evening: Disney Studios (Fantasmic)
The Actual:
As can be seen above the original plan for today involved Animal Kingdom but as we went there on Monday we went to the Studios instead.
It was not raining when we woke and I went for breakfast whilst everyone else got ready.
We arrived at the Studios at 8.30 and pretty much made our way straight in. We were a little way from the opening ceremony but when the rope dropped we quickly, but not too quickly, made our way to Midway Mania (MM) where Josh and I picked up fast passes and Vicki followed on behind. We met up in the queue where Vicki had stopped to wait for us as she was pretty much forced into the building by a cast member. We all thought this was an excellent ride and a great addition to the studios, studios; it kind of makes Buzz Lightyear in the Magic Kingdom fade into insignificance, and is much easier on the thumbs.
Following MM we rode the Great Movie Ride (GMR) and if ever there was a contrast in rides this is it. In my opinion the whole ride needs gutting and renewing we ride on every visit and I must admit I cannot see us riding again in future visits. There must be another way that the magic of the movies could be brought to life.
As we exited GMR High School Musical (HSM) was making it’sits way to the hat, we got a spot to the left of the hat. Emily sings HSM songs everyday on the way to her grandma’s and we thought she would really like this show. Whilst she did watch she didn’t take part, dance, sing etc as we thought she would.
At this point we separated and Josh and I went to see Indiana Jones whilst Vicki and Emily went to Voyage of the Little Mermaid.
Josh enjoyed the stunt show however as with GMR maybe there needs to be a major upgrade to this show, maybe incorporating the Kingdom of sculls or another Indian Jones movie.
Vicki said Emily enjoyed the Little Mermaid, and to reinforce the point each time we walked past she asked if she could see Ariel.
It should be said that by this stage Vicki’s watch had stopped working, due to the rain and pushing the stroller, making arranging meeting times difficult. We had a quick lunch at Backlot Express and this time Vicki took Josh to the 1.20 show of “of “Action Moteurs” whilst I took Emily to the 1.30 Playhouse Disney show, and arranged to meet afterwards at Studio Catering Co.. Co. On the way I took Emily shopping where she bought a small soft Woody. This show has had a few upgrades over the 4 years we have been to see this show with Josh and now Emily, Bear, Stanley, Jo Jo etc have made way for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Handy Manny. This simple updating whilst I understand is easier for this kind of show is an example I wish could be employed with other rides.
Again Emily didn’t really interact as I thought she would but we both, I, enjoyed this time together. On exiting the show Vicki was outside ready with our Ponchos as the Action Moteurs show was cut short after 10 minutes due to “inclement” weather.
I don’t really remember how or why we went across to the studio catering company but it was there that the light rain turned into a full blown storm which raged and whirled for at least 90 minutes before we were able to make a dash for the exit.
After spending time in the room we went to Subway for tea and then went to Magic Kingdom for 7pm. After riding Winnie the Pooh, the carousel and watch Mickey’s Philarmagic we made or way to Main Street where for the first time this trip we saw Wishes, it was still raining.
Thoughts on the day
We finally got to see Wishes,Wishes; however the sound of the rain on the Ponchos did lessen our enjoyment. I enjoyed spending some time, albeit brief, with Emily as we don’t usually get to do that. I spend a lot of time with Josh going to football matches and stuff so this was nice.
The rain really is getting to me now, somebody once said there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothes., they They were talking rubbish.
Day 7- 21 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Extra Magic Hours at Magic Kingdom
Afternoon: Back to pool
Evening: Kids Choice
The Actual:
I didn’t set the alarm last night and we rose around 6.45 after breakfasts and showers we arrived at the Magic Kingdom at 8.15, Dumbo had a 20 minute wait so we queued together and when we got to the turnstile I held back so Emily could have a 2nd ride with me.
We obtained fast passes for Peter Pan as there was a 30 minute wait and rode Small World, Emily seemed to enjoy this ride and was pointing dolls out to Joshua.
We walked over to Toon Town where we were held at the rope until 9.45, we were walked towards the Judges tent and at this point I witnessed something I thought I would never see, every one just walked straight past Mickey who was standing in the street welcoming people to Toon Town, what a photo, I couldn’t believe it!
We made our way to Pixie Hollow and stood about 6th in line. After a 20 minute wait we met with Tinkerbelle, Iridessa and Rosetta. As was the trend for the trip Emily did nothing but talk before seeing characters, however, when face to face she clammed right up.
On exiting Pixie Hollow the wait for the Princesses was already 45 minutes and the Pixies 75 minutes and it was only 10.15.
Emily played for a while in Toon Park whilst Josh and I rode Goofy’s barnstormer after which we used our fast passes for Peter Pan and went for an early lunch at Pecos Bill, whilst the others ate I went for fast passes for BTM, timed for 2.50.
What followed was a first, after 12 years and 5 previous visits we went across to Tom Sawyers islandIsland. As it had been raining quite a lot in the last few days itsit’s was very wet under foot and in some places very slippery. Overall the kids enjoyed running about for a while but I wasn’t sufficiently grabbed that I would make the trip across again in the next 12 years.
On returning to Frontierland we stopped for a drink outside the sweet shop behind the Indian statue, I do enjoy these quiet moments of doing nothing in particular however the “quiet” is quickly broken by a brother and sister taking too much of each other’s space and a big brother teaching his little sister bad habits.
Again we are almost at the end of our 6th full day of our trip and we have not yet seen the Magic Kingdom parade, after sitting down for almost 30 minutes we arrived back on Main St. at around 2.20 and promptly sat down again to get a spot for the parade. We were just in front of the Time Board and again we have never been this far down the street for the parade. We normally watch from the top of Main Street in between the Emporium and Sweet shop looking down Main Street with the Castle in the background. However the parade does not follow its previous route and so this was not an option.
The parade was ok, not that I disliked it but I’ve seen better. The song was catchy I’m just not sure about the theme.
Following the parade we made our way back to the hotel where we spent time at the pool, Josh just spent the whole time using the slide. One of the reasons we decided on staying at this hotel was the pool, the rain has pretty much put pay to our intentions to spend more time by the pool.
After about an hour we showered and again went to Subway for tea. We arrived back at the Magic Kingdom at 8pm, as Emily was asleep Josh and I left Vicki to claim a spot for SpectroMagic whilst we used tethe fast passes we obtained for BTM earlier in the day. On the way to BTM it started to sprinkle with rain, as the train we were riding made its entrance on to the mountain we were greeted with a downpour which did not abate for at least 30 minutes. We managed to find Vicki, who was by this time drenched sitting with Emily who had 3 layers of raincoverrain cover, but as it was still raining there was an announcement that Spectro was delayed, we decided to simply leave as it did not look like the rain would stop soon. It was still raining at 9.30 when we got to our car and on our return to Coronado at 9.40 it had stopped.
Thoughts on the day
I suppose I should be grateful that it did not rain today until 8.15pm however I have been here a week now and have not yet seen spectromagic. It was cloudy all day today and I didn’t apply any sun cream, I have now burnt my arms.
We all seemed to have a good day today, I can’t believe that I walked straight past Mickey and even now as I type this some 3 weeks late I still can’t believe it.
Day 8- 22 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Lie in bed - Pool
Afternoon: Pool
Evening: Extra Magic Hours at Epcot
The Actual:
Again my plans have changed as we intended to have a lie in today and just spend time at the pool however we decided today would be a good day to got to Animal Kingdom.
We arrived at 8.30 for 9am opening, Josh and I made our way to Dinosaur and were the first 2 riders, Vicki and Emily went to TriceratopTriceratops spin and managed to get 2 rides in before we got there, they were about to start their 3rd when we turned up, the operator let us in through the exit and we rode together.
On our way to camp Minnie Mickey we stopped to visit with Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore and on arriving at Camp Minnie Mickey we visited with Minnie, Mickey and Goofy before getting seats for Festival of the Lion King.
I do like this show but as could be said with most attractions after numerous viewings I am wondering how it could be revamped, amended or changed completely.
We made our way to Nemo and I ran across to get fast passes for the Safari.
I really like this show and think they have managed to capture all that I like about the film. I even cried at the same point I do in the film when Nemo tells his dad that he loves him before going to school at the end. Emily fell asleep and missed one of her favourites.
Luckily we had covered the stroller, as tit rained whilst we were watching Nemo but it had stopped by the time we exited and the sun was still shining. We walked to Yak and Yeti counter service and whilst we were eating we had a downpour which then turned to rain we left Animal Kingdom at 1.30 and it was sill raining, in fact it did not stop until around 6.30pm.
We went to Pizza Hut for tea and then Epcot where we agaiagain rode Spaceship Earth and Nemo.
We staked our place on the bridge between UK and France for illuminations. This is our usual place to watch Illuminations however the lakeside torches were not working and the audio was well barely audible to make matters even worse the wind blew the smoke and debris right towards us.
After the show as it was EMH I bought a Jack Daniels and coke to drink whilst walking across to Test Track, this is something I could turn into a tradition for future holidays, although we could sit down somewhere and all have a drink.
Test Track had a 50 minute wait, now I wouldn’t wait that long during the day so I’m not going to wait that long of an evening. We went shopping in Mouse Gear and spent money leaving Epcot around 10.15.
Thoughts on the day
Again because of the rain we did not get to do what we wanted, Flights of wonder and other Animal Kingdom stuff. I am conscious that I keep mentioning the weather but it really was that big a factor of our trip.
Another down side to today was the sound quality of Illuminations and the lack of the lake side torches.
Those torches really set the mood for an evening in Epcot and gradually over the past years they have gone on later and later to the point where they seem to go on 5 minutes before illuminations and then are not reignited following the show. I cannot understand why the sound was so poor and hope it is just a one off.
Day 9- 23 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Cinderella’s Royal Table Breakfast
Afternoon: Pool
Evening: Kids Choice
The Actual:
Today’s breakfast with Cinderella was booked in December and we have all, maybe with the exception of Josh, been looking forward to this experience.
As our sitting was at 8.05 we had an early start and we arrived at the Transportation and Ticket Centre just before 7am. There was a monorail just arriving as we got there we asked to ride upfront and we were told yes, Vicki rode further back with the stroller. The driver wasn’t very talkative but that was ok.
We were held at the turnstiles until 8am and we walked down a near deserted Main Street, I took a few nice pictures of the kids walking towards the castle. This is the perfect start to a hopefully perfect day.
We were seated almost immediately after having our photograph taken with Cinderella. This was the first time inside the castle for all of us and we were seated at a table by the window overlooking Fantasyland.
The set-up was very efficient and Emily visited with all 4 princesses, Aurora, Belle, Jasmine and Snow White. Whilst having a window seat was nice the light from the windows did effectaffect the photographs and we had to move Emily and the Princesses around. Again Emily was all talkative and excited at seeing the princesses however when they arrived not a peep was heard and againand again she didn’t look towards the camera.
Whilst the experience was nice and we would probably return the breakfast itself was shocking. We asked on a number of occasions for extra croissants and muffins, they did not arrive. This is unforgivable considering we paid for Josh, who as he is allergic to eggs doesn’t generally eat breakfast other than muffins etc.
Our meal wasn’t much better and when you consider the price of the meal I’m sure some kind of further serving would be appropriate.
After finishing our breakfast we waited at the entrance to Fantasyland ready for the rope to drop, took pictures with a very scrawny fairy godmother, godmother and we were 2nd in line for Dumbo and rode Winnie the Pooh twice. We then went to Ariel’s Grotto and from there queued at the entrance to Toontown to visit with the princesses and then Mickey and Minnie.
Vicki and Emily then went to see story time with Belle whilst Josh and I went for fast passes for BTM and ride Pirates.
As we exited Pirates it was again raining, although only slightly. We met Vicki in Ray’s Starlight Café by this time the rain was heavier and so we stopped for a bite. When the rain stopped we waited in front of Walt and Mickey for the Move It Shake It party. We all enjoyed this and Emily and I went into the street to dance, although in reality I danced while Emily watched. This was an enjoyable 20 minutes or so and the tune was very catchy.
Josh and I used our fastpasses and we left Magic Kingdom around 2.15.
We managed to get some pool time in today and were there for almost 2 hours.
The plan for tonight was to get something to eat at the Black Angus on the 192 and then return to the Magic Kingdom to catch SpectroMagic. In reality after eating it began to rain we just about made it to the car before the deluge that followed, it was raining so heavy we pulled into a 7-11 to wait it out, an hour later we were still there. In a break in the rain we made a move only to again have to pullto pull over for another hour. Unfortunately by the time we were back on the road it was past 9pm, the kids were asleep in the back and I was just about ready to get a flight home.
We were back in the room by 9.30pm and whilst everyone went to bed I watchewatched the NuggettsNuggets v. the Chargers
Thoughts on the day
An overall good day today, we all enjoyed the breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table and it was nice to have experienced the inside of the Castle. As I said earlier despite the cost and the poor breakfast we would probably return as Emily did seem to enjoy the occasion. I don’t think Josh would appreciate another visit and so any future breakfast might only involve Vicki and Emily.
Day 10- 24 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Pool
Afternoon: Pool
Evening: Extra Magic Hours at Magic Kingdom
The Actual:
The day before the holiday we decided to get tickets for Sea World and today seemed like a good day to go as the rain was forecast to have passed us by.
We decided not to set any alarms and so I didn’t wake until 8.00, however we were inside the park by 9.20.
The primary objective for today was the shows and so we went straight tostraight to the Dolphins at 10am.
On our fWhen first visiting to Sea World 12 years ago the thing that attracted me to this place was the quietness, stillness, the serenity of it all. Not anymore, the addition of Mantra has removed any hope of this, the constant screaming of riders flying over your head has pretty much ruined this park.
Add to this the new Dolphin show in which you are treated to 7 minutes of Dolphins followed by 10 minutes of acrobats and a final 2 minutes of Dolphins is one of the biggest disappointments. The park is called Sea World not “Flying Dresseddressed up like a Parrot World”. The oohs and aahs that followed everything the dolphins did was generally followed by indifference to the acrobats. Maybe I’m too much of a traditionalist but I really enjoyed the old way with the introduction from Jack Hanna. It was Dolphins and only Dolphins. Don’t get me wrong I have seen at least 6 Cirque du Soleil shows and I am a fan however if I want La Nouba I’ll get tickets.
After the Dolphins we went to see Shamu, played in his harbour ate lunch and then viewed a few exhibits.
After eating muffins in the bakery, these are fantastic and a must each visit, we played a game of mini golf at winter Summerland. Once again the rain came and so we were unable to go swimming.
After showers we went to catch a bus to Magic Kingdom, we managed to wait for 20 minutes without sight of a Magic Kingdom bus, we decided to take the car and within 25 minutes we were on Main Street. This reinforced my belief that a car is both a must and a better option for the future.
We were in the Magic Kingdom for 8pm and again took a spot outside the Camera Shop to view Speectromagic. I went to Casey’s for fries for everyone before going for fastpasses for BTM and around 1 hour later we finally got to see Spectromagic. As usual it was a great show and is a definite must every trip.
We again went for Brownies and Muffins at the bakery whilst waiting for Wishes after which Josh and I ride BTM I do remember thinking this was the best ride on BTM so far this trip, it was also the first when it was dark.
Whilst tonight was EMH there was no way I would be able to stay past 11pm and so the latest night of the trip so far saw us not get into the room until 11.45pm.
Thoughts on the day
This is what being on holiday should be like, late nights early mornings.
I am conscious of the fact that I seem to be moaning a lot about the holiday but Sea World is now one of those places I might go to every 5 years or so, and that really is a shame.
I understand why they have put rides there, Atlantis was to my mind a good addition and Kraken is positioned so as to not impact on the genteel theming of the park, Mantra however dominates the view from the very entrance of the park, this really did grate both on the eyes and the ears.
We now seem to spend even less time in this park and I don’t really know why. However I think the kids enjoyed their time there and if they were to ask to go back next year I probably would give in.
We finally got to see Spectromagic and I am now happy, almost.
This is the first trip we have really used the Main Street bakery of an evening and this is a bi product of our visit to Disneyland last year when we would get carry-out for our breakfast the next day, I can now say though that day spent in the Magic Kingdom will probably involve a visit to the bakery ,bakerythe, the brownies are gorgeous.
Day 11- 25 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Pool
Afternoon: Animal Kingdom
Evening: Extra Magic Hours at Animal Kingdom
The Actual:
Originally as can be seen above we intended to have some pool time today but during the course of the week we changed plans to use EMH at the studios. Well by last night we had decided to go to Blizzard Beach in the morning.
We didn’t set an alarm and woke just after 8am,8am; we arrived at Blizzard Beach just minutes before 10am and were promptly in the park after queuing at the wheelchair access turnstile.
I’ve noticed a lot during this trip how people do not queue properly in the parks. Most cashiers have a left and a right side yet people insist on only queuing on the side where people already are standing. This was especially true in the studios one lunch time, there was a queue of almost 9 people on the cashiers right and no one to the left. Today no one went to the turnstile on the extreme right, right and almost everyone went to the same cashier for a locker key when there were at least 2 other cashiers with no one waiting.
We took up a spot in Tikes Peak and Josh and Emily played on the slides, Emily was in her element however we went for a float along Melt-away-Bay. Josh and Vicki had a ride on run-off rapids and then Josh and I had a go whilst Vicki took Emily back to Tikes peak.
Josh went for a play at Ski Patrol and then we both went to see how Emily was doing, she was building sandcastle, after being a “big girl” on the slides. Vicki had also bumped into someone she works with in the UK who was on her first visit. We all felt hungry and were surprised to see it was 12.30.
For the first time we ate at one of the water parks as we have normally left after an hour or so and this is bar far the longest we’ve spent on any one visit. We left around 1.15 and after showers at the hotel we were in the Studios at 2.50.
We took a seat waiting for Block Party Bash, this is the first time we’ve seen this indeed the first time we’ve seen a “parade” in the Studios. It was high octane stuff with lots of bouncing and jumping but ultimately forgettable, thatforgettable, which is not to say we didn’t enjoy it or wouldn’t see it again, again; I just can’t remember the tune or the floats.
We all walked towards Action Moteurs but rather than 4pm it didn’t start until 4.30 so we spent time in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids play area. I was struck by the ages of the “children” using this play-area I asked a cast member if there was an age limit and was told not. These “children” paid no attention to any small ones and pretty much ran amok, amok; this was not a relaxing play, with too many hidden areas
We made our way to Action Moteurs and got seats pretty much in the middle to the side of the booth. Emily then decided she didn’t want to stay as she was tired and so Vicki took her shopping with arrangements to meet by the hat. Emily fell asleep before they got there.
The show was this time interrupted by inclement weather after 15 minutes and we managed to make it to Studio Catering before the deluge that followed. Vicki and Emily were meanwhile getting drenched under the cover of the hat, and Emily had woken up from the loud thunder claps. The storm lasted 20 minutes following which we met Vicki and then left the Studios.
We drove the car across to the Boardwalk as we had not yet visited there this trip. We stopped for Pizza at the window and after drying the chairs ate our dinner. Josh and I completed a mission in the United Kingdom and we took up a spot on the bridge between to UK and France, I fancied a crepe and so took the kids for a walk.
It started to rain around 8.30 and did not stop until 9.10. After Illuminations we walked past YatchYacht and Beach club and went to the Boardwalk bakery again sitting outside for brownies and muffins. This is a nice way to end an evening and were I to stay in this area something I would do almost every night.
Thoughts on the day
We had a really good time intime in Blizzard Beach, every time we come to Disney World we always say we will visit the water parks more next time, this trip is no different. I can now again say that when we go back to Disney World we will go to the water parks more.
This was the first time we’ve parked at the Boardwalk and entered Epcot from the International Gateway but it is definitely something we will do again in the future as it is a much more relaxed departure from the park after Illuminations, I wouldn’t do it in the morning or on our “last night” but other times sure.
Day 12- 26 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Extra Magic Hours at Magic Kingdom
Afternoon: Pool
Evening: Extra Magic Hours at Epcot
The Actual:
The penultimate full day of any trip to Disney World is always spent at Epcot, however after completing my itinerary for this trip Manchester United qualified for the Champions League Final against Barcelona. This game is to kick off at 2.45 Florida time as a result most of that day would be spent thinking forward to the game nerves etc. As I do not want to be in Epcot in such a mental state I decided that I would bring forward the Epcot day to today.
We woke at 7.30 and were in Epcot and opposite the fountain by 8.45, after the official opening Josh and I rode Test Track whilst Vicki got fast passes for Soarin and rode the Land, after breakfast we all rode the Land and whilst Josh and I rode Soarin Vicki took Emily to the character spot. When Josh and I made our way there they were not far down the queue and so they left the queue and we all went to the Pixie Hollow garden and to see the butterfly garden. There didn’t seem to be many butterflies, unless I was looking in the wrong places.
Vicki and the kids went to Canada and I took my time taking some photos, after they finished at Kid cot we saw O’Canada for the first time in years and the first time with Martin Short. After taking our time at the UK and France Kidcot stations Emily met with Aurora, Belle Jasmine and Aladdin, it was nice slowly walking in the heat and sun. We sat outside Liberty Inn whilst the kids ate lunch, afterwards we walked to China and Vicki and I ate lunch from Lotus Blossom. We then took our Mission Pass to Italy and were given a Mission in Norway, which we had already saved, and so we were given China, from where we had just walked.
After locating the monkey the heat was beginning to get to us and so at 2.30 we went back to the hotel where I was going to surprise Josh and hire a boat on Lago Dorado however it started to rain, the rain lasted 3 hours and so we were unable to hire a boat. When the rain stopped we walked to the Dig Site only to be told it would remain closed for a further 30 minutes. The kids played in the quiet pool for 15 minutes. Josh decided he would disobey me and not get out when asked, why do kids do that?
After showers we again went to Pizza Hut, this time by the Crossroads. I decided that after dinner we would play golf at Fantasia Gardens but when we left Pizza Hut it was again raining and so we just went to Downtown Disney instead.
Josh designed a T-shirt and we were back in the room at 10.
At some point today I went the concierge desk to have someone looksomeone look at the television as the pixilation seemed wrong I also phoned housekeeping to arrange an early housekeeping visit tomorrowvisit tomorrow so I am not disturbed during the football (soccer).
Thoughts on the day
We were in Epcot today for 5 ½ hours and we left feeling like we hadn’t done much, much; this is something I’ve noticed about our visits to Epcot over the years. I’ve never ridden Maelstrom, can’t remember the last time I walked around Italy or watched the American Adventure and we spend as much time in Epcot as we do the Magic Kingdom. That is not to say I don’t like Epcot I like it just as much as the Magic Kingdom, like a child I love them equally just in different ways. ItsIt’s just that whenever we got to Epcot we always seem to do the same things.
I said I wanted to see Off-Kilter this trip, did I?
No.
Day 13- 27 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Epcot
Afternoon: Pool
Evening: Epcot
The Actual:
Today would usually be an Epcot day but as Manchester United were playing in the Champions League Final this afternoon we decided a trip to the Studios would be better.
We arrived before the official opening and saw the same routine as earlier in our trip and we followed pretty much the same routine this morning as that day also obtaining Midway Mania fast passes before riding the standby line, Emily wanted to see Playhouse Disney again so we all went along this time. After our first breakfast at StariingStarring Rolls this trip Josh visited with Cars and the Power Rangers whilst Vicki and Emily played in the Honey I shrunk the Kids play area. Josh was first in line for Blue and I left him to go get Vicki, at which point we played Power Ranger tag, Vicki would queue in one line whilst Josh and I waited in another, this way we managed to see all the characters.
I know some people will have a problem with this but I do not see it as line jumping, Vicki was stood in line and Emily did also see 2 of the characters on top of that we don’t have autograph books and take half the time as other autograph seeking guests.
We left the Studios around 12.10 and stopped at Subway at the Crossroads. On returning to the hotel Josh and I hired a boat on Lago Dorado. This is the first time we have done this and were enjoying ourselves until it began to rain, now isn’t that a surprise. As we had only been on the lake for 20 minutes we were not charged.
When we got back to the room our request for an early housekeeping visit had not been fulfilled. I called housekeeping who said some one would be along soon, this was 1.20.
The reason for requesting an early visit was because I didn’t want to be disturbed during the football, football; the cleaner arrived almost 2 hours after my call at 3.10, during the match.
WhiltWhilst the match was on, the sun came out, and Vicki took the kids to the pool. The match was not good and we were beaten, Josh was upset but as I said to him you cannot win every game and defeat can make you stronger.
At the end of the game we all went back to the pool, for the first time we ate at Siestas. The food was not good, but it was nice being out in the pool all that time and sitting outside for a while.
We showered and were back in Epcot for 7.30. As this was our “last” night in Epcot I had wanted to walk around world showcase and Future World with no particular destination in anticipation of Illuminations. However the rain had other ideas and as we entered the park it began to rain. I didn’t fancy walking in the rain and so we visited Character Spot.
After seeing Mickey and friends we walked towards World Showcase for Illuminations, we stood almost opposite The American pavilion and were far too close to really enjoy the show. I had intended on walking around World Showcase one last time however Josh and Emily decided to have bit of a melt-down. We made our way to the car and as Emily fell asleep almost as soon as sitting in the car we went to Fantasia Gardens where Josh and I had a game of mini-golf. The course wasn’t too difficult and we finished just before closing time, as it began to rain. This is a nice way to round off a day and as the sun isn’t beating down on you not an unpleasant experience.
As we have breakfast at Chef Mickey’s booked for 7.30 I set the alarm for 5.45.
Thoughts on the day
The holiday is almost over and still the rain seems intent on completely destroying me. I was disappointed with the football today and Josh was a little upset with the result but it did not spoil my day.
I am still trying to find the perfect spot to watch Illuminations, whilst tonight’s viewing was very loud and the fireworks right in your face I did see lights dancing on the American Pavilion that I hadn’t noticed before.
I have real issues with the quality of the housekeeping at the hotel. Whilst when the room is seen to it is clean the times which they arrive are not suitable to a family who goes to a park early doors, back for a swim then again out to the parks.
The fact that I specifically requested and early visit today yet still no one showed up until 3.10 really annoyed me. The last thing I wanted at that point when the match was so tense was having to traipse towels across the room and sign to say I didn’t want the room cleaning when I did want it cleaning but 3 hours earlier.
We enjoyed the boat on Lago Dorado and will have to do this on the Seven Seas Lagoon next.
I can’t believe tomorrow is our last day, when planning the holiday the last day is one I always have in my mind, a relaxing walk around Magic Kingdom doing whatever rides we fancy no plan of action and the ultimate end to any holiday Wishes over the castle.
Day 14- 28 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Chef Mickey’s Breakfast
Afternoon: Pool
Evening: Magic Kingdom – Crystal Palace
The Actual:
After making notes throughout the trip now I come to our final day I cannot find any. However I’m sure I will be able to remember all details.
As we had priority seating reservations for 7.30 we drove to the Transportation and Ticket Centre we were the second car on the row. We did not position ourselves very well on the monorail and when we disembarked at the Contemporary Resort there was already a queue of people in front of us.
We were given a buzzer and as we were not having the picture taken told to wait to the left of the desk. This area has been recently refurbished and the area used for Chef MickeysMickey’s seems to take up nearly half the concourse.
We were seated on the Bay Lake side in a corner. I would say this venue now has 3 main seating areas and we have sat in each, overlooking the Magic Kingdom, the area to the very top of the resort and now Bay Lake side.
This is now a tradition of ours for the last day of our holidays and unlike Cape May café will continue to be so. The buffet is extensive, for a breakfast, service prompt and we have never had a problem seeing the characters. All I would say is that this time we had to wait almost an hour before each character had been to our table, but we were not in a rush. Unfortunately like most inside venues the photos were not as good as I had hoped.
After breakfast we walked to the Magic Kingdom and as we entered we saw Snow White to our right next door to the Camera Shop, we got some nice photos and after this also visited with Mary Poppins.
We made our way to Toontown to try to be the first family of the day with Mickey but there were a couple of families who just got there first. We didn’t wait to see Mickey instead we raced the Tomorrowland Speedway rode Winnie the Pooh , Snow White saw Philarmagic went to see the Tiki Room and rode the Carpets. I ran and got fast passes for Big Thunder Mountain.
There was rain on the air but it was quite refreshing we all rode Pirates and then got in line for Captain Hook and Mr. Smee. Peter Pan and Wendy were not due out for 40 minutes but decided to sit and wait, as it was raining cast-members said they might not come out, but they did. As we were by Pecos Bill the kids shared some fries and then Josh and I rode BTM. As Emily was asleep we again sat for a while in Frontierland before making our way to Main Street around 2pm for the parade, as we were in no hurry to do anything we just sat and waited, Josh eating a muffin.
After the parade we did a little shopping and took the bus back to the hotel I bought a present for Josh for later in the evening and after showers we went back to the Magic Kingdom for tea at the Crystal Palace.
Our reservations were for 7pm but we went straight there at 6.30. There was no record of our reservation on the system and I did not have the confirmation number with me. The attendant tied every combination of our name to try to locate us, to no avail. We were however seated in 10 minutes.
I really like the Crystal Palace, the setting the quality of the buffet and the characters. But it was at this point with only hours left of our holiday that I realised that we may have to change the way we do the “World”. I mentioned to Vicki that I thought I was trying to recreate too many memories rather than making new memories. I got the impression the kids were jaded to it all and were determined not to follow the script.
Joshua decided he was going to be jealous of Emily and not let her visit with the characters on her terms and insisted on getting into each photograph. Emily decided it would be fun to make noise for no reason.
It is the last night of our holiday and we were not happy people, though it has to be said this has happened before.
Little did we know it would get much worse before it got better.
If you have made it through to this point of my first trip report you might have an impression of me that I am a bit of a moaner or a whiner.
That is not the case but in the process of writing this report, making notes sitting back and considering the trip as a whole I have noticed more negatives than I might normally.
One thing that has really upset me this holiday though is the rain.
I fully understand and appreciate that a great many people were made homeless in Daytona Beach and other parts of central Florida and that my trip is a fairly insignificant event in the scheme of things but I really do love coming here on holiday.
Since 1997 Vicki and I have now made 6 trips to Florida with Disney being the main focus of those trips. We have been alone as a couple, with both sets of parents and my sister, on our honeymoon, as a young family and now as a slightly larger family. We have many memories, photos of which adorn our home and we also have a few sad memories, Vicki’s mum showed the first signs of cancer on a previous trip. However we continue to come to Disneyworld and will continue to do so.
On this night, our last night the weather really did take one last bite.
As we left Crystal Palace there was a sprinkling of rain in the air, as we attempted to make our way to Fantasyland to ride the carousel the rain became heavier until it was almost a torrential downpour. We managed to get into the Hall of Champions shop where we waited, and waited and waited for the rain to stop.
Luckily the rain did become a lot lighter and bearing in mind Wishes still took place earlier in our trip whilst raining I was not overly concerned and so I went shopping.
On our first trip in 1997 I gave Vicki a cuddly toy at the end of our last night this has now evolved into giving Josh, Emily and Vicki a gift during Wishes at the point that Jiminy Cricket says “well I’ll be it’s the Blue Fairy”.
Whilst waiting for Wishes we went to the Bakery and ate muffins and brownies, whilst the rain was much lighter the sky was illuminated with electricity. At 9pm there was an announcement that Wishes would be delayed, the same message was repeated at 9.10.
At 9.20 the announcement was made that “Due to inclement weather tonight’s performance of Wishes has been cancelled” Not fully wanting to believe what I had just heard I asked a passing cast member who confirmed what I had just heard.
Even now, writing this almost 4 weeks later, I am upset. At that moment during Wishes when I give Josh, Emily and Vicki a present I make a couple of wishes.
The fact that we return almost every year means that one of those wishes does come true, the fact that Emily is now with us means that a previous wish came true the other has yet to happen.
As there was no Wishes I gave Joshua his watch, Emily her Mickey and Vicki her T-shirt. As I said the rain had stopped and not wanting to leave we left the Bakery and walked towards the castle. As we stood in front of the castle the “kiss goodnight” started and this is the first time I have seen this from right up front it was in itself a nice end to our holiday.
As we had parked right at the from of the car park we were away very easily, on returning to the Hotel I went to Rix Lounge to watch the Magic game and have a Jack Daniels.
The kids were asleep when I got back and so I watched Jay Leno’s penultimate show with Billy Crystal.
Thoughts on the day
I think I have already pretty much summed up my thoughts.
Day 15- 29 May 2009
The plan:
Morning: Magic Kingdom
Afternoon: Magic Kingdom
Evening: Fly Home
The Actual:
Now whilst yesterday was the “Last” day today is really the day we go home. In the old days of 5 day and 7 day passes, not the 14 day ones you can buy now, the day home consisted of sitting in Denny’s or walking round Denim shops waiting for our time to go to the airport. Not anymore.
Vicki took the car back to Doubletree suites whilst I took the kids for breakfast, she was back in 30 minutes and so we waited a El Centro for a bus to the Magic Kingdom. Throughout this trip we have alternated between the car and the bus and have had some considerable waits. Today would take the biscuit and the cake.
We waited for almost 1 hour for a bus to the Magic Kingdom I lost count as to how many Epcot, Studios and Animal Kingdom buses went past. There was an attendant noting the times of the buses and so I asked could she request a bus, she said no. After waiting a further 15 minutes I asked again, she said she was trying. I was about to hijack a bus when one pulled up without a destination, this then became a Magic Kingdom bus.
Despite this wait we still had a few hours in the park and using fast passes rode a fair few rides in Fantasyland. We did not get chance to ride BTM despite obtaining fast passes and Josh was a little upset but he got over it.
We ate pizzas outside at Pinocchio’s village haus and oddly enough it began to rain quite heavily, we managed to anticipate this and make our way up stairs to the balcony.
It didn’t rain for too long and after a wait of about 45 minutes we visited Pooh and Tigger and Josh and Emily played in the Pooh play area.
We were approaching the end of our time and so slowly made our way to the exit, on the way we noticed Pluto stood outside the Camera shop , as we got there he went in beckoning us to follow. Daisy was already there waiting, I got in line for Pluto with the kids and then we went next door to Daisy.
At this point a lady from behind told her daughter to stand in front of us, Vicki turned to say we were in line, to which she received a volley of how I had pushed in front of her as she had been stood outside with Pluto.
I did not push past anyone, maybe I walked quicker than those stood outside, but the queue was inside not outside. I told the lady she should have said something rather than use her daughter as a pawn in this way.
What a way to end our trip.
We made our way to the hotel and got the bus an hour earlier than scheduled, check in a t the Virgin desk was a nightmare and you had to take your luggage from the check in desk to the scanner yourself, 4 cases a stroller and a car seat with 2 children in tow was not easy.
The flight was fairly uneventful other than a 20 minute period of heavy turbulence whilst trying to eat and drink.
We landed on time and were in our home around 11am.
Thoughts on the day
It is good that now we have 14 day passes the holiday can end with a day in the park rather than just killing time.
I did not intend to line jump and if I did the person involved should have told me, but I got a picture with Pluto.
Overall thoughts on the trip
Loath as I am to say it the weather made a big impact this year, however this would be forgiven had Wishes not been cancelled.
Despite all the arguments and tantrums associated with a 2 week holiday involving the Garside family I would have to say it was worth it.
The hotel was fantastic and we all enjoyed the pool, the theming was top notch and generally the service was excellent. The buses however have convinced me that any future trip to Disneyworld must include a car.
When asked what the best bit of the holiday was:
Josh answered Dinosaur
Emily answered Winnie the Pooh
Vicki answered seeing Emily enjoying herself
Me – spending time together as a family.
We would go back to Coronado Springs and have already considered returning. However next year’s holiday has now been booked and we are staying in an Emerald Island villa. We are going on the 21 March for 19 nights and hopefully at that time of year the rain will be at a minimum.
Thanks for taking the time to read, I have enjoyed putting these thoughts down on paper and hopefully somebody somewhere will enjoy reading them also.
