Hey all! I looked through and couldn't find a thread about this (doesn't mean there isn't one, just means I couldn't find it if there is...) so I thought I'd just throw it out there and ask:

I've got a line on a pretty good deal for the Swan and Dolphin for an upcoming trip. I'm only going to have a few nights, but they're going to be leisurely nights. I would like to have the best view possible without upgrading the room beyond having a balcony (I know a balcony will be a little more, but I'm just trying to avoid the big jump in price to a suite). So, for anyone who has stayed at the Swan and/or Dolphin, which has the best views? Which has balconies? Is it worth paying extra for a view of epcot? (I love illuminations, but I don't know how much I care about seeing it without the music...although I *could* just play the music on my iPod while I watch it from a balcony! :p) Anything else I should know about these properties?

The specifics that may come into play when rendering your opinions: travelers will be myself and my mother (2 adults), right around Christmas time (probably during the busy time just before Xmas when all the kids have just gotten out of school. Probably will do a Christmas Party at MK and possibly an evening at Cali Grill (so I will see fireworks from up high, thus making the view of epcot not too big a deal...)

Anyway, please give your input! Any opinions will be greatly appreciated!:D

For the criteria you listed, there is no difference between the Swan and Dolphin. I guess the Dolphin gets a slight edge since it's a bigger hotel, meaning there is theoretically a better chance to get upgraded to a good view.

Are you a member of the Starwood Preferred Guest program? If not, sign up online--even being a basic member will give you the tiniest bit of preference over someone who's not when it comes to room selection. Keep in mind, though, that Christmas is the busiest time of year at WDW and there will likely be plenty of people either willing to pay for great views or getting free upgrades due to their elite status with Starwood.

Regarding what else to know, be aware that they are not FULLY Disney resorts, so you don't get all the benefits a Disney resort guest does (package delivery comes to mind, as does the inability to charge across the resort to your room). There is some outstanding dining right at the Swan/Dolphin, and you can charge to your room from either hotel. And all those dollars turn into Starwood Preferred Guest points, helping you earn a free night or upgrade on your next stay! ;)

Fresh was incredibly yummy for breakfast (Dolphin) and if you like karaoke, Kimonos at the Swan was a lot of fun with a group (adults).

The counter service at Picabu is (according to a dear friend) fab. Price of the baked potato bar is a STEAL at $5.50!

Kimonos also features surprisingly good sushi, so even if you're not into karaoke it's worth stopping by.
