View Full Version : Please stand clear of the doors...
WdwGurl4life 04-02-2009, 04:25 PM Ok just a thought* I have been reciting that phrase since I was a lil kid.. I don't know why but it stuck in my head.. I know the Spanish version too. I would always make a big deal about going on the monorail because I would be so excited to hear that! So I thought I was the ONLY crazy person UNTIL May 2008... I saw it... THE SHIRT>>>>>> I almost DIEDDDDD. I could not believe that a shirt had been made of that saying because I thought I was the only one who really gave a crap about that..Not knowing that APPARENTLY a lot of other Disney fanatics loved it too! So I held out to buy it because .. Well I really don't know why I held out? But I went back in July and I bought it. I wore it a few times at home.. running to the store or at cheering practice and I GOT SOO MANYY comments about it.. SO MANY ppl knew what it was from.
Just curious but WHY ARE WE (anyone who likes that saying) SO ATTRACTED TO THIS THING? Hidden message maybe?? Just a thought!
danyoung 04-02-2009, 04:35 PM I think it's just one of those little things that we all have in common when making a Disney visit - we all hear that saying dozens of times. I really look forward to hearing it for the first time. And that voice - the late great Jack Wagner, voice of Disney since the 60's, is completely Disney to me. I also enjoy "Remain seated, please - permenencer sentados, por favor (sp?)" at the end of a Matterhorn ride.
Kwahati 04-03-2009, 04:42 AM Where did you find it? At the parks? Does anyone know if they still have them? (I do think that's a really ubiquitous Disney phrase that most of us who were raised on Disney grew up with...)
OfftoDisney2009 04-03-2009, 04:58 AM Hmm, it's not really a Disney thing only. On the NYC subways, they say "Stand clear of the closing doors." And I'm sure they say very similar things on other monorail/subways, etc. Maybe I could make money in NY selling subway shirts that say that :)
disnut8 04-03-2009, 05:34 AM Jack Wagner's voice is just one of those that people listen to. Like when Walter Cronkite speaks. It's a trusted voice. We don't have very many voices like that these days. Maybe Tom Hanks.

Well, I would submit that the combination of the words and Jack's voice is totally a Disney thing, very special to that one place on the planet.
wishiwasthere 04-03-2009, 07:09 AM I have it and bought for my mom as a gift.
My mother wore it last August and we went to take the monorail back to the Poly and one of the monorail CMs walked over while we waited and pointed to my mom's shirt and started speaking spanish to her. When my mom told him she didn't speak spanish he looked very disappointed. He was from Puerto Rico so maybe he was a little home sick?
He then asked why she was wearing that shirt. She said that Disney sold it and because she loves saying it on the monorail. He looked so confused. I guess because he speaks spanish he didn't think anything of it when it is said on the monorail.
Leslie 04-03-2009, 07:41 AM I want a "please remain seated" ring tone. lol

so funny you say that because I recorded it on my cell b4 and used it as a ring tone lol

Hmm....DC Metro Subways say, in a female voice, "Stand back, doors closing." which is not nearly as friendly or memorable...but, then again, DC isn't nearly as friendly or memorable as WDW either!
Drince88 04-03-2009, 10:05 AM I think it was AVP that said you can tell 'WDW-native speakers' from 'DL-native speakers' but the phrasing they use on the Spanish. Just like you can tell Yankees from Southerns by the use of "soda" vs "coke" to mean the same things.
jenjustinsmom 04-03-2009, 12:15 PM i love the fact that my kids monerail is the same voice as at disney

Now I'm curious. What are the two sayings? I didn't realize they were different.

Click here (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?p=1368893&highlight=spanish#post1368893) (shhhh it's in the Disney secrets thread)
MrsGrumpy 04-03-2009, 01:08 PM Thanks, I started reading that thread, then never went back to it, I guess.
:)
mckat 04-05-2009, 12:36 PM This isn't Disney, but my Mom and her British friend are just as nuts about the phrase "mind the gap" which is said when you get on the underground (the gap being between the cars and the station floor). They say it whenever there is a tricky situation- or when they just did something not so bright. I would definately smile and it would brighten my day to see the shirt with "please stand clear of the the doors...".
Other sayings from Disney?
"keep you tenticles in the car"
"Move to the end of your row"

"NO HOKEY POKEY-ING!" ...or maybe that's just what I imagine those signs say! :p
Tinker Bell 04-06-2009, 02:10 PM If you like the shirt you may want the (http://pinpics.com/cgi-bin/pin.cgi?pin=27529&sid=6295.1239055708) pins (http://pinpics.com/cgi-bin/pin.cgi?pin=27530&sid=6295.1239055708)
Vegitabeta 04-06-2009, 02:16 PM I have the shirt also, I love it! Though nobody round these parts knows what it means and I keep getting strange looks when I tell them :p

O one of my favorites, "Stopping in the middle of your rows in unpatriotic."
lol
tdelaney_98 04-06-2009, 09:37 PM Amen!!! Oh, that FROSTS me when they stop in the middle of the row and then I have to climb over or just sit down wherever I land.
I might just get a "stand clear" t-shirt. That is priceless!
