Monday Feb 16th - Drive from Northern CA to Anaheim

Drove down to Anaheim from Northern CA on a very stormy day. As a result of the snow and ice, the Grapevine was closed and we were diverted through Tehachapi Pass, along with everyone else and their Grandma. The added distance of the detour, plus holiday traffic, plus the rainy weather added 4 hours to our trip making it a 12 hour trip. This wasn't really that big of a deal, especially since we got to play in the snow and take in the snow covered scenery.

Upon arriving for check in, my credit card would not go through and the clerk was required to call the credit card company for authorization. GREAT! It turns out that there was a security hold on my card because we had used it to buy gas in so many different cities across the state that week which flagged it as possibly stolen. Pretty cool that they're watching out like that but 20 minutes on the phone with the Visa people after being stuck in the car for 12 hours was not exactly my idea of a smooth check in. Obviously this had nothing to do with HoJos and in fact, the guy was super nice about it and very patient with the Visa company. We finally got into our room (bldg 6, first floor, $59 entertainment rate) unpacked and soon fell asleep.

DCA Trip Highlights:
-My husband took the 7 year old to the Animation Academy where they learned how to draw Goofy. We'd never been there before and will definitely be going back.

-Met Handy Manny for the first time.

-Had a blast, as usual, at the Pixar Play Parade and didn't get hit with one drop of water (I didn't see them spraying anyone, as the weather was chilly.)

DL Trip Highlights:

-Ate at Redd Rocket Pizza Port for the first time and were really pleased with their caesar salads. The pizza was pretty much mall pizza fare and a bit dry, but the kids loved it and portions were ginormous.

-Yay for the 32 ounce soda!!!!!

-Met Donald Duck for the first time in years.

-My husband and niece got SOAKED on Pirates of the Caribbean one night. During one of our trips last year, we got splashed by a canonball but this time around they said a wave hit them after the second drop, soaking them in the front row. The boat was full but no one else seemed to get that wet. They were easily as soaked as you'd get on SM; their jeans and shirts were sopping wet. I watched them exit the ride and they were waddling towards me in their wet jeans. Hours before this, I had taken my 17 month old on it and thank god we didn't get drenched, she'd have freaked!

-Two words: tigger tails!!! My husband and niece love these treats which are only sold at the Pooh's Corner shop but they're too sweet for me.

-We had preferred seating for Fantasmic! for the first time ever. While it was great to have the awesome view, chairs to sit on and plentiful snack boxes, it was a bit pricey for us ($59 adults, $49 kids) and something we'll probably do only once a year rather than on each and every trip.

-My niece riding Space Mountain, Matterhorn and Star Tours for the first time.

-Minnie and friends plaza inn breakfast is always a hit with us. This time around we saw Minnie, Goofy, Capt Hook, Eeyore, Tigger, Pinocchio, Fairy Godmother, Chip and Dale, and I think that's all.

-And from the 'Why didn't we do this sooner' department - yay for pressed pennies! The two older kids each started a collection this trip. DL sells pressed penny books at $7 each. The books each have 48 penny pouches and 9 nickel/quarter pouches. The pressed pennies themselves cost 51 cents each, so for $34 total, the kids were able to get 20 pressed pennies each plus their own souvenir book. Finding the penny machines was a fun game and the kids loved choosing which pennies to press. They've played with the pennies (yes, I said, "played with the pennies") so often since we've been back that I totally feel like it's worth the money. We'll continue our penny quest on our next trip.

Trip bummer:

For the first time ever, we lost two items on this trip: sunglasses and my daughter's hat. The sunglasses can be replaced but losing my daughter's hat really bummed me out because of its sentimental value. She's been wearing that hat since she was 4 mos old and I was planning on saving it for her because we have so many photos of her wearing it. We filled out a form with the lost and found folks and are hoping some kind soul may have turned it in after we left.

Overall, an awesome trip and if all goes well, we'll be back at the parks in mid-March.
Thanks for reading,
Leslie

My wife lost her hat in February, filled out a form at lost-and-found, and within a week Disneyland mailed the hat back. I hope the same thing happens to you.:)

Thanks for the great report! I appreciate how you set the report up with the highlights and trip bummers. Not that I don't enjoy reading some of the longer reports, just this one was nice and quick to get through.
I have a few questions for you: 1) how did your 17 month old react to Fantasmic? We are going in May with our DS who will be 23 months and I wasn't sure about the noise level etc. and what rides beside Pirates did you take her on?

Last year our then 4 year old DS loved the pressed pennies too, even though he only did one, so this trip if he's still into it we'll have to check out the books, thanks for that heads up!

1) how did your 17 month old react to Fantasmic?

The 17 month old loved fantasmic. She also loves the fireworks show. She's my fearless baby. My 4 year old, however, had his head buried in my shirt during most of the fantasmic show and has always fallen asleep before the fireworks started. I think it just depends on your kid's temperament. My 4 year old has always been sensitive and easy to spook but my 17 month old seems to be pretty much the opposite of him so far.

and what rides beside Pirates did you take her on?

She went on more rides than the 4 year old! This time around she rode the train, the monorail, pirates, haunted mansion, mr toads, buzz, flik's flyers, chew chew train, dumbo, jungle cruise, winnie the pooh, pinocchio, monster's inc, it's a small world, and alice in wonderland. But she usually also rides all of the other fantasy land rides (except snow white because we're never taken her on that, not because it's scary but because I think it's lame), she also used to ride autopia but I'm not sure she'd pass the new height requirements, as we've not checked it out since they changed it. I think that's all of them, off the top of my head. She absolutely loves the pixar parade and meeting characters, so we always do the Minnie character breakfast and see the pixar parade at least once while we're there.

FYI, not all of the stores which have pressed penny machines carry the books. We found ours at the shop in toontown but I've also seen them at the Emporium on Main st. Also, here's a link to a map which has the locations of all of the pressed penny machines at DLR. I had printed this out but forgot to pack it.

I hope you have a great trip with your family!

1) If you're worried about your kid's reaction to Fantasmic, I wouldn't worry about it. Go ahead and see Fantasmic. My sister saw Fantasmic for the first time when she was only 1 year old and she was fine with it. Chances are that they'll fall asleep before the earliest show begins, but if you don't want to take any chances, and you're able to stay late, try hitting the 10:30pm performance. I actually prefer that one because then you can watch the fireworks from the castle and then watch Fantasmic and plus, the second performance is less crowded.

2) I 100% agree with you about the pressed pennies! I have like a hundred of them from my 30+ trips to Disneyland AND Disney World! :D

We have gotten the books at the store in Critter Country. You can also pick up a list at City Hall if you forget yours.
With your 4 y/o, our youngest is easily spooked also and is much happier since we started carrying foam earplugs with us to DL. Anything potentially loud, we pop them in. Actually we went over the weekend to our local putt putt type place to drive the cars, and I thought they were loud so I sent DH to get his out of his truck. (he is supposed to have them for the power tools he works with, doubt he uses them but he has them.)

Great idea candles71!! I'm going to be sure to pack some earplugs!! Our 5 year old does worry about noise levels so he'll need them at some point I'm sure. Thanks!

Made the big mistake of taking my 40th Anniversary Indiana Jones adventure hat with me couple of years ago, and making the double mistake of wearing it on Grizzly River Run. Hat came off on second drop from the top of the mtn. Reported it to Guest Relations. They said it probably landed in the bottom of the ride and would be easy to spot as it has Mickey on the front dressed as Indiana Jones.

Never heard a word from Disney on this - somewhere, someone is enjoying a free 40th Anniversary hat. Hope they like it.
