Ok, this may seam like a real weird question but all the times I have gone to WDW I have wondered this. When you walk down main st. first thing all the stores on each side of the st. look like colorful 2 story houses. All we as guest's can access is the store's on 1st. floor. So my question is what is in the upstaires or do they just have the look of a 2 story house with windows? Are they apartments, storage or just nothing? I would love to go upstairs and look down at the main st. but I doubt that will ever happen.

I believe it's mostly storage, but I like to pretend there are people working up there, helping to make the magic :D.

they aren't full floors. in fact, i think the scale even shifts as you go along down main street as part of 'forced perspective'.. there is equipment up there (most of the speakers that play during parades/presentations are in 2nd floor windows, but are covered up when they're not used), but mostly i believe it's just accessibility/maintenance stuff.
although it's likely there are offices in some buildings, primarily towards the front. i know this is/was the case at disneyland.

With all the time's I have been to Disney you wouldnt think I could keep coming up with questions. Everytime I visit I see something new and need to know more about it. lol

Does anyone know if there is an apartment above the fire station just as you enter MK? For some reason I thought there was, but I might be imagining it...

That's in Disneyland, not WDW.

only Cindy's apartment in WDW.
the firehouse apartment at DLR was only supposed to be temporary and the now dream suite was meant to initially be a permanent Disney apartment. it was even in the process of being built as such when Walt died. Lillian passed on the apartment there, so it ended up being re-purposed.
not so ironically enough, Walt also intended to have an apartment in the castle at WDW. that one never happened at all. until the suite was constructed for the YOMD

Isn't there an apartment above Pirates in DLR too?

That's where the dream Suite is in DL. It was initially going to be the permanent apt for Walt et al - Lillian decided against it after his death - it became the Gallery, and then converted into the Dream Suite.
