Has anyone had any success when asking for a complimentary upgrade at check in with either of these hotels? Do they ever upgrade a standard room to concierge level? Do they ever upgrade two rooms to one suite? I am going in a couple of weeks and I believe the hotels are at around 50% capacity (that is what one reservations agent told me). Thanks!

I think at best you can hope to be upgraded to a view room - either of the pool or Downtown Disney. I do not believe Disney would upgrade to concierge or a suite because it is very expensive to do so and other guests pay for that. You could ask and hope ;-)

I was just upgraded this week to the Mickey themed room (it was a suite) in the Dreams tower, DTD view. I only asked if a DTD room was available, I booked at the AP8 rate, standard view.

I was upgraded automatically from a standard to a view room at the GCH that was booked using a special AP rate.

Yow on the upgrade to the Mickey suite, sandiegorob!

Here's my experience -- when we checked in to the DLH for the Tinkerteen's birthday last week, I didn't ask for anything at all. When I was handed the room keys, the CM said, "I'd give you a free upgrade, but we're sold out for tomorrow."

I couldn't help thinking how kind it was of her to tell me what we couldn't have...

My husband told the CM he was going to propose to me and wanted to upgrade our room. The CM upgraded to the Hooneymoon Suite (no extra charge- Disneland Hotel 11th floor).

 A bit dishonest, no?

think there's a better chance of a magical upgrade if I tell them it's my birthday ahead of time or when we check in? :D

Both, call and tell them now so they can note your ressie, and then a friendly little reminder at check in...:)

Good point; I'm sure that's the case.

What I thought was funny is that I was asked if I was celebrating anything special. I replied no, I was just attending a conference at the convention center.

When we checked in, they knew we were celebrating a birthday, because the CM mentioned it. But for the first time since we've been doing her birthday trips there, the DLH did absolutely nothing. No balloons (although they'd said when I made the reservation they would do that); no special key (they always ask which is her favorite character and give her a key with that character on it), no character photo -- nothing!

It made me sad, but since I'd sent a basket to our room for her, I figured that was good enough. We ended up moving to the Grand Californian (not because of that), and the housekeeper there left her washcloths rolled up into a birthday cake shape. Very cute, and I was very grateful!

Ironically, that was our experience the whole weekend. We did the character brunch at Storytellers, for example, and they noted on our seating card that it was her birthday. But nobody did anything at all, so I wondered why they even wrote it down.

I went back Tuesday with my (adult) pal to get her birthday fun card, and they gave all of us pins that said "I'm celebrating" in honor of her birthday. I'd seen people wearing them all weekend, and I had no idea what they were for. When they gave my daughter her birthday button, they didn't offer those for the rest of us. Go figure.

In any case, she got her birthday fun card, so I really can't complain. (Although the CM did give me a bit of grief over having brought a copy of the certified copy of her birth certificate rather than the original!). But I was disappointed at how un-special her birthday was there this year compared to past years!

No, he really did propose. We got married three weeks after our trip

Yeah:D! Sorry to have suggested that you were anything other than completely honest. Congratulations! May you be as happy together as you are while at the Disney parks!
