View Full Version : Help..I want to be cool too
disneyscott 11-21-2002, 02:10 PM I would like to post bold replys to quotes too but eveytime i try it never works....could one of you smart cool people show how to do it here and allow some playing around to see if i have learned what you have taught.
Spoilers would be cool to learn too and the different color text.
SzczerbiakManiac 11-21-2002, 02:25 PM Three suggestions: Click the [quote] button
You'll see it at the bottom of every message. After you click it, when the compose message screen comes up, just start typing after what's already there.
Explore
Look above the message composition box. See all those buttons? When you hover over them with your mouse, a bit of text explaining what they do will appear just below. For a more detailed explanation, click the [help] link next to the words vB Code. (above and to the left of the message composition box)
Experiment
Use [Preview Reply] to your advantage. Try an effect and Preview it. If it doesn't look right, try it again. The best way to learn this stuff is to get your hands dirty and actually do it.
Spoiler boxes must be done manually. For a spoiler box, you have to use the {spoiler}{/spoiler} tag (replace the curly braces {} with square brackets []). Everything you type in between tags is affected by that tag. So everything you put in between, e.g., {spoiler}The butler did it!{/spoiler} will be blacked out. (Again, remember to use square brackets, not curly braces.)The butler did it!See? :)

RStar 11-21-2002, 03:05 PM I agree, Bill. I hate when people post right after someone by hitting the quote button, there by reapeating the whole post. This is real bad when a picture is included.
disneyscott, to help you remember some of the vB code when doing quotes and spoilers and the like, use the square bracets ( [] )and remember that "QUOTE" is in caps, and the last one is close quote with a forward slash ( / ) if you want to type it out yourself. And if you do a quote by hitting the quote button, hightlight the unwanted parts and delete them, or simply backspace over the unwanted parts.
Also with the buttons above you can make text italic, colors, larger, smaller, ect.
Although I havent yet figured out how to change the size AND the color at the same time:confused: .
And if you know the code you can type out the smilies yourself rather than clicking on them. Like using : and ) for smile.
And don't forget that you can click the edit button at the bottom of your post within a set amount of time (I think 30 min.??) to fix typos.
Bill Catherall 11-21-2002, 03:08 PM VB code is not case sensitive, so caps or not, it will still work.
RStar 11-21-2002, 03:15 PM Really! Thanks Bill!
It always comes up caps when I use it, so I assumed (you know what they say about assume:)) it had to be that way. See I'm still learning! I've never used a chat board before posting here just months ago. I learned it all by just working it and asking questions.
So good luck disneyscott. Also when you hit the "B" button for bold a box pops up that your message is typed into. Be sure to watch for it and hit "ok" to get it in your post. It will be in the [B] brackets and look normal until you post and then it will look bold.

(size=3)(color=blue)type text(/size)(/color)
if done correctly it will look like:
type text
notes:
* standard size is 2 and I believe 4 is as high as moderator allow (I usually use 3 when enlarging text)
* you can obtain a list of available colors by clicking the color arrow
Bill Catherall 11-21-2002, 03:44 PM Size=3 is the largest size allowed. Technically you can go bigger, but you'll find yourself edited. :p
And here's a little trick for changing the color of a URL. I've found that it has to be done in this particular order.
(url=http://www.mouseplanet.com)(color=red)MousePlanet(/color)(/url)
And it turns out like this: MousePlanet (http://www.mouseplanet.com)
If you do the (color) before the (url) it doesn't change the color and looks like this: MousePlanet (http://www.mouseplanet.com)
This is important whan you want a whole sentence a different color and the sentence includes a url. Here's what happens:
Visit MousePlanet (http://www.mouseplanet.com) and get some good trip planing tips.
When you really might want it to look like this (you have to nest another (color) code inside the (url) code):
Visit MousePlanet (http://www.mouseplanet.com) and get some good trip planing tips.
You can nest any number of VB codes to really dress up your text.
(color=green)(b)(i)(size=3)(u)How's this?(/u)(/size)(/i)(/b)(/color) will look like:
How's this?
Order isn't important except for that URL code problem I mentioned above (although it's good practice to close your codes in the opposite order you "opened" them).
Hmm... these codes can sure get confusing. I guess what we really need is WYSIWYG editing... Hmmm :~D
Alex S. 11-22-2002, 10:07 AM Ack, not that. Give people WYSYWIG and they are going to start using different colors and font sizes. It'll be almost as bad as smileys.
MouseWife 11-22-2002, 10:22 AM RStar~
In case that is all too complicated, as far as the colors are concerned, italics, size too {maybe} I finally just figured to
cut and paste.
But, on my computer, hitting the paste button or paste on the pulldown didn't work, I had to right click.
This way, too, you are staying in the board set sizes, etc.
Haven't tried spoilers.
How the heck do people figure these things out?

MouseWife 11-22-2002, 11:34 AM Nope. Don't have html or anything special.
Just a cheap computer. :D
I think the kids know more about computers than I do, and I am not ashamed to admit it. They were given instruction in school.
When I was in school, all they had was a big giant computer, with a name. It had it's own room and everything. It was like a really big deal.
I mostly look for things on the internet.
disneyscott 11-22-2002, 11:38 AM I dont see buttons above other than the smilley face..... When did this turn into brain surgury
