i heard that space mountain would be closed for 6-8 months in 2009.
is this true ?
i am looking to go in oct or nov of 2009 , and would be very unhappy if this were the case. my 7 year old was just big enough last year to get on , and she is dying to get back on it .

I had heard that it was going to be closed in 2009 for major renovations, which it desperately needs. It's a bummer because we'll be there next July, but it will be worth it. This past summer we thoroughly enjoyed DLs version, having never ridden it before (it was closed during our first trip to DL back in 2003), and I hope WDW's version after the refurb will be similar, with the sound track and everything.

HM was closed two years ago when we were there, but it did not ruin our vacation. SM's being closed stinks, but we'll still have fun. Plus, it gives us a reason (as if we needed one) to come back again! :D

I heard the same. If it's anything like DLR's refurb, it will be worth it. It will. I about knocked out the little bit of sense I had last time I rode the WDW version. I will ride it again in Dec, just for "old time's sake"

I just returned from WDW and we were not able to get on Space Mountain after trying on two seperate days! I think it needs to be clsoed down as many people were reporting that it breaks down frequently.

Got to see the inside with thelights on both times though because we jumped on the TTA! Pretty cool!

It's always sad to hear of a ride being closed for such a long time, but from a DLR AP holder that goes monthly, SP at WDW was extremely disappointing. I am glad to hear it's getting a facelift as I agree that it needs it. It felt like a wooden rollercoaster than a smooth "space" ride. Does that make any sense? Not to mention, no music? The music at DLR makes the ride!

My disabled father rides DLR SM just fine, but when he got off WDW SM, it had hurt his back and he had to lay on the benches for about 30 minutes and was in pain the rest of the day.

We haven't been on Space Mountain since 2005! The last few years; everytime we tried, either it was broken down...or while we were in line, we had to turn around and exit because it broke down.

That makes me nervous to get on a ride like that knowing how much it breaks down...yikes!

It really does need an over haul...

Oh boy, if they refurb WDW's Space to be like Disneyland's, I will be in heaven! That was my fav ride at Disneyland, but WDW's version I don't even bother with anymore. So if it is closed for that reason, it will definitely be worth it!

Agreed. I know a CM that currently works Space Mountain. I'll ask him and get back to you.....

Rumor is that it'll be a lengthy refurb beginning in January, but I haven't been able to get it confirmed yet. (Hence, it's not in the Park Update.) Once I get confirmation, it'll be listed.

But the force is strong with this rumor. Audio appears to be in and out of the rumor, depending on where it's coming from and when.

But since the whole ride is based on the same tubular track as the Matterhorn, I seriously doubt there is anything they can do to make it smooth like the DL version (which is newer). I'd be suprised if they redid the ride track technology, even if they do a complete track redo like they did at DL. (But I'd be SOOO happy to be suprised! My sister and I didn't ride it this trip because we never did feel like dealing with the bumps and such from the attraction!)

Trying to possibly get in a quick trip in before Space Mountain closes for repairs. Last I heard they would close at end of January so, Im hoping to be there last week of January. Just wondering if any news about the closure has leaked out recently. If not then I can plan for a later date visit. Thanks in advance......

I just talked with a CM for Space Mountain yesterday.......he said that nothing had been announced yet. It's all still rumblings as far as he knows. Hopefully, that will be good for you!

We're heading to WDW Feb 7th and just wanted to find out if there have been changes to the Jan 2009 schedule for SM to undergo refurbishment? Thanks! :)

I wonder if it will be put on hold because of the whole economy thing?

It is a super bumpy ride and does break down often from what I have heard and experienced. A small refurb may be nice just to do keep the break downs to a minimum.

I wonder if there'll be a press event for American Idol next month and they'll announce it then?

I just got my 2009 Vacation Planning DVD in the mail. Enclosed is a pamphlet with park maps which have every ride numbered. Space Mt is in the picture but not numbered or listed. They may still be deciding and just covering themselves, but I found that to be pretty telling.

So is the DVD a new one? Not the clouds deal, right? How is it; give us a critique. It has to be better than the last two years. Please, do tell!

I am shamed to admit I am a bad Disney fan and I haven't watched it yet! :( The packaging is different if nothing else! No clouds!

I realized I lied in my last post. Not every ride is listed. CofP isn't either. So, I will restate that most rides are listed- all the E, D and C tickets for sure- and no Space. I will try to watch it and report back!

No, you're a good Disney fan, just a busy one, I'm sure :D. Yes, please do report back. I've been waiting for the new one to come out before I ordered it; would love to hear how it is set up first hand. I'll look forward to your report.

Like Petesimac we just tried the DL version of SM this past summer and I'll ditto the hopes that WDW does a similar refurb! DL's was out of commission a lot longer than 6-8 months though, wasn't it?

Now I'm off to order the new planning DVD! :D

Yes, I believe it was close to a year and a half? (But my memory may be failing me) It actually closed unexpectedly, early, due to issues found on a morning inspection. They replaced EVERYTHING inside the building - all the supports, all the track, etc. Do NOT expect that a WDW redo will make it as smooth as DL. The track technologies are different, and I don't know if it's physically possible to make the WDW track smooooooth like DL.

I don't ride it every trip (I always end up with extra bruises after I'm done), but I will be attempting to ride it this weekend (oh, maybe tomorrow, even!)

Aw thanks! I watched the main parts last night and I am sorry to report, it is the same people talking in the clouds about their "dreams." It really makes no sense without the Year of a Million Dreams theme. They have photoshopped some colorful Mickey balloons into the clouds though. :p

The DHS is updated somewhat with the new name and a segment about Toy Story Mania. There is also a "what's new" section.

So, I haven't watched all of it, but it seems to be 80% the same from the last one.
