Ghoulish Delight 11-19-2002, 04:27 PM Go to "Edit Profile". There's a entry "Custom User Text" that, on the right, will show your current title. Enter the new title in the box and click "Submit Modifications" at the bottom of the page. If you decide to go back to your default title (i.e., Junior Member, Member, Senior Member), check the "Reset?" box and click Submit SoCalSnowWhite 11-19-2002, 11:19 PM Ok, i know how to do that, but how can I put a picture in my profile? Nigel2 11-19-2002, 11:35 PM You can't.:~D And now I blame you for the forthcoming info that you summoned.:~D stinkerbell 11-19-2002, 11:38 PM Ah, that would be an avatar.......and the use of them has been disabled, due to bandwith or speed or something technical that I can't understand. All I know is that MousePad is speedier since their disappearance. The pictures in some of the profiles (mine, for example) were our avatars that appeared below our member status/title and above our location. They were fun and I didn't think I could live without them, but here I am. I survived their disappearance. :crying: But I still really, really miss them. Or, rather, being written into the code by the people who developed and supply the code for the boards. The future of avatars remains to be seen. Lani 11-20-2002, 09:40 AM You can still view member avatars by clicking on their Profile information. Ghoulish Delight 11-20-2002, 09:46 AM Originally posted by Lani You can still view member avatars by clicking on their Profile information. Yes, but you can't upload new ones. Only people who had avatars the day the avatars died still have one in their profile. Disney Nick 11-21-2002, 11:35 AM Okay, I'm not one to bring up any sort of nitpick, but avatars do not bog down a host so much. I'm an administrator on a message board which receives 2 million pageviews a month and has about 100-200 users actively viewing the board at any time. We use a very similiar script to this, though if anything it is probably more resource intesive than this one. Our current host is about $75/mo which is easily paid for by ads. Your needs can't be more than ours (at least MousePad - MousePlanet as a whole is admittedly bigger). Now, I wasn't around when avatars where enabled, but we have avatars (as do many other boards that are bigger than this one) with no bogging down of the system. Is there something I am totally missing? I mean you can limit file size/dimensions of avatars if you are concerned about download speed for users of the site. Also, you can set smaller limits for the posts/page setting so that fewer posts (and consequently avatars) per page. Anyways, just stating my total lack of understanding for the need to turn off avatars. I suspect that there is an alterior motive that hasn't been made public, but I may be totally wrong. I hate to bring this up again, but I am really curious. Not that it's a big deal for me whether or not there are avatars - just curious. A response by Tony or Lani would be really helpful :) adriennek 11-21-2002, 12:40 PM Didn't we send this to the glue factory yet? Nick, I realize from reading your post that you are asking logical questions; however your questions are based on your own environment at your own server/host/system. You yourself admit to not having been around when avatars were used here; you have also heard from others how much the system has sped up since we removed them. I am not sure I understand why this is difficult to understand. Regarding your comment that we have something sinister and secretive planned up our sleeve ("I suspect that there is an alterior motive that hasn't been made public") -- just because we have not been able to provide answers that fully satisfy your own curiosity does not mean we are plotting behind your back to do something bad. This is an issue that has not only been discussed ad nauseum here, but one that we have even officially incorporated into our FAQ forum. Until the admins arrive to a point where we can adequately reassess the situation, I kindly ask that we leave this topic be. Disney Nick 11-21-2002, 04:14 PM Gotcha Lani :) I'll drop it. Oh and regarding the alterior motive, I've pondered if you didn't shut off avatars for other reason (there are other reasons besides speed of the board), but I suppose they are more understandable so if those were the reasons you'd just tell us outright. Anyways, thanks for the response. |
