DCL News!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just got word on 10/6/08 - go to www.disneycruiseline.com/news a big announcement at 12:30 Eastern time with a live webcast at 12:45
"They claim big things are on the horizon - see all the Magic"

I am sure it has to do with the 2010 sailings

I can't wait for them to officially confirm what they are doing in 2010. We booked two placeholder cruises on our most recent trip, just so we'd have them in place to move over to the new itineraries.

The worst-kept-secret rumor is that the Magic is returning to Europe in 2010, so now the only real mystery is *exactly* what itinieraries will be offered. We're hearing it will not be the same as 2007.

The announcement is in New York, and since the Magic will have to reposition across the Atlantic to get to wherever it's going to home port, there are a LOT of people hoping that the ship will make a trip up the East coast and a stop in New York before heading across the pond.

Here are the cruise dates and itinieraries. BE SURE to look at the actual itinieraries for the cruise you are interested in, rather than just reading the descriptions. It looks like they are recycling descriptions from last year's European trips. For example, the Westbound trans-Atlantic cruise description references stops in Cadiz and Tenerife, when the ship is actually going to Madeira, Portugal; St. Maarten and Tortola.

I remember being in this pickle three years ago.

The itineraries are exactly what we hoped for, we already have the placeholder cruise in place, our amazing Travel Agent is all ready to make the arrangements...

...and I'm having a very hard time justifying the cost. Royal Caribbean has a 12 Night Scandinavia And Russia Cruise that is less than half the price of the DCL 12-night Northern European Capitals cruise. It's enough of a difference that if we do the RCCL cruise, we would save enough to also book one of the trans-Atlantic cruises with Disney.

Decisions, decisions.

I think we're going to move our placeholder from Thanksgiving '09 to one of the Northern Atlantic Capitals cruises and cross the bridge when we get there whether we'll actually do that one or push it into 2011 for the inagural cruise of the new ship.

Disney Cruise Line Sets Sail
For Russia, Northern Europe and Mediterranean in 2010

Disney Magic to Spend Extended Period in Europe; Disney Wonder Sails 4- and 5-Night Cruises

NEW YORK (Oct. 6, 2008) – In response to guest demand, Disney Cruise Line will reposition one of its ships, Disney Magic, to Europe for an unprecedented five-month season of Northern European and Mediterranean cruises in 2010.

With a wide variety of European itineraries in 2010, families have the ability to explore exotic and unexpected destinations with the safety and comfort of traveling with Disney Cruise Line, the leader in family cruising.

For the first time, Disney Cruise Line will offer a 12-night Northern European Capitals cruise, where guests can experience breathtaking fjords, historic city centers and Viking lore at enchanting Scandinavian ports such as Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm. The ship will also sail to Warnemunde, Germany, gateway to Berlin, and to St. Petersburg, Russia. The Disney Magic will overnight in St. Petersburg, allowing Disney Cruise Line guests time to experience the city known as the “Cultural Capital of Russia” or use the second day to book a shore excursion to Moscow.

“The Northern European Capitals itinerary provides our guests with an amazing collection of destinations to explore,” said Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin. “We’re excited to bring the rich history, culture and folklore these ports offer to life for our guests in a family-friendly way only Disney Cruise Line can deliver.”

Departing out of Dover, England, the Disney Magic will sail a total of four 12-night cruises to the Northern European capitals in June and July 2010. Rates for the 12-night Northern European Capitals itinerary start at $3,649 per person for a category 11 stateroom.

Book-ending the summer season in Northern Europe, the Disney Magic will once again return to the Mediterranean with 10- and 11-night cruises, but with three new ports of call not offered when Disney Cruise Line last sailed the Mediterranean. In addition to popular ports in Italy, France and Spain, the Disney Magic will visit Tunis, in Northern Africa, the island nation of Malta, and Corsica, an island oasis off the southern coast of France known as the birthplace of Napoleon.

“The response from guests who sailed on our Mediterranean voyages in 2007 was overwhelmingly positive,” said McAlpin. “We’re thrilled to bring the ship back and look to make the 2010 season in the Mediterranean even better, with new destinations and more one-of-a-kind Disney experiences for our guests.”

Departing out of Barcelona, Spain, the Disney Magic will sail four 10-night and four 11-night cruises in the Mediterranean in April, May, August and September. Rates for the 10- and 11-night Mediterranean cruises start at $2,529 per person for a category 11 stateroom.

Disney Cruise Line will also offer four repositioning cruises including two 14-night transatlantic voyages, a seven-night cruise from Barcelona to Dover, England, and an eight-night cruise from Dover back to Barcelona.

Disney Magic 2010 European Schedule

12-Night N. European Capitals 6/12, 6/24, 7/6, 7/18

10-Night Mediterranean 5/5, 5/26, 8/18, 9/8

The Disney Magic isn’t the only Disney ship embarking on new itineraries in 2010. For the summer of 2010, the Disney Wonder will shift to four- and five-night cruises sailing to Nassau, Key West and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The shift is designed to accommodate guests looking for slightly longer cruises with Disney Cruise Line while children are enjoying their summer break. Rates for the special five-night voyages to Key West or two stops at Castaway Cay start at $899 per person, while the four-night voyage begins at $849 per person for a category 11 stateroom.

Disney Wonder Summer 2010 Schedule

Okay, I'll ask again. How is DCL justifying the difference in cost? Do they offer that much more in service over their competitors?

Okay, I'll ask again. How is DCL justifying the difference in cost? Do they offer that much more in service over their competitors?I don't think they are "justifying" it, they've just set their asking price and now we'll see if people will pay it.

I recognize that Disney is going to have some start-up costs and economy of scale disadvantages that the other lines do not currently face, so their operating expenses are likely to be higher. I'm willing to pay more for the Disney experience, and I don't begrudge them higher fares in the face of higher operating expenses, but there is a huge difference this time.

Disney also knows that some portion of their market will go wherever the ships go, whatever the price. I think you need look no further than the costs of the transatlantic cruises for examples of that. I paid about $1000 for the transatlantic cruise in 2007. That was a steeply discounted rate, booked just 6 days before the ship sailed. Even lower rates were offered to cast members and travel agents in an effort just to fill the ship.

The starting price for the same category is $999 for this transatlantic sailing. I think Disney knows that they've already realized the "premium" they could hope for from the people who would pay the higher rates to be on the very first transatlantic sailing; now they have to cater to a different group.

We're still really torn about this. We're likely to move one of our placeholder cruises to the first of the European Capitals cruises, and then just see if Disney drops the price as we try to set money aside. We have 18 months to save for the cruise, and we're trying to figure out how we can use airline miles and DVC points to cover the related travel expenses.

At the same time, my TA is searching for similar itineraries on other lines, and he's found several that look good. We're probably moving our second placeholder cruise to the eastbound transatlantic, so we may just do the European Capitals cruise with another line, and do the transatlantic with Disney using the money we save.

This is truly one of those areas where you need to look at what you can afford to do and then go with it. Disney is charging an incredible premium over other lines but, they may end up discounting to fill the ships. In reality, Disney will get a number of people who have to be on the first Northern Capitals Cruise or have to be the first on this cruise or that cruise, that is the nature of Disney. There are very loyal guests who will pay the premium price to ensure that they will be on that particular voyage as the bragging rights are kind of nice. But, please be cognizant that Disney may not lower their prices as time goes by, it is their call and they will make the determination as to how best use their ships.

Now, I will say that the most interesting point made regarding the Northern Capitals cruise would be the shore excursion offering in Germany to go see the new builds under construction.......this would make the trip worthwhile, but again, I would have to look long and hard at the numbers, things are tight all over and if...........and I hop I hope I hope, I win the lottery then I'm there, otherwise I have to think of what's best for my family and where the best value can be had.

Enough of that, it is going to be fun watching this and seeing what happens over the next few weeks.

Does anyone have a link for the pricing on these? I don't see them on the DCL site and would prefer to get some $$ info before I talk to my travel agent, since I don't think we would actually book, but it would be nice to know what the costs would be.

The European cruises sound amazing, but they are outside of our reach with our current budget and life situation.

On the other hand, I think I will be calling next week to book one of those 5-night cruises with the dual stops at Castaway Cay...

I've never been the one booking or even researching any of our cruises, so I wouldn't even know where to find this kind of information-- so the Magic will be in Europe for summer 2010... what happens in summer 2011? Like, obviously, this announcement was a big deal because it's a special deviation from the usual Caribbean/LA/warm America-based itineraries, but like, how often do these European options occur? When do they release those kinds of dates-- is it always two years in advance?

Assuming Disney gets clearance from the National Park Service, 2011 will be Glacier Bay cruises to Alaska.

Typically, DCL has announced new itineraries like this 18-24 months out. However, with the third and fourth ships coming online beginning in 2011, and the consistent rumors that DCL will have a permanent presence on the West Coast, I don't know that that pattern will hold true.

I just wish they'd started the 5 night cruises earlier in May (like they did this last year with the 4 night double-dips).
