My Husband and I will be in New Orleans next Summer, early August, we are Disneyland people, we live 90 minutes a way, I have been to WDW once, my husband has never been.
Could we drive from NO? Any thoughts on if this is doable? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated...:)

Depending on what you want to do and how long you want to stay, sure it's do-able.
Mapquest shows it as around a 9.5 hr drive.

So, not exactly a day trip... but you would be much closer than me. :)

I used to have a co-worker that regularly drove with his family, but I never drive, and another co-worker who has gone multiple times always flies as well.

You can get a non-stop on Southwest, which for 2 people is probably going to be cheaper than driving. If you have your own car in New Orleans, just park at one of the long term lots at the airport and fly to and from. If you're in a rental and have flexibility in your flights, personally, I'd do a 3-legged trip, but you might run into flight issues if you can't fly Southwest from your home - Delta did have one non-stop a day (haven't looked with the recent airline cutbacks to see if they still have it) but it was at 'icky' times of the day, so any other airline you're going to have to stop between New Orleans and Orlando.

To get to Orlando from New Orleans, you have to drive through Mississippi and Alabama, which isn't too bad because both of those states are 'skinny' on I-10/on the Gulf, but then you have to go most of the length of the Florida panhandle, which is deceptively a long drive.

Check with whichever airline you will be using for a "triangle" fare. This way you will get San Diego - New Orleans - Orlando - San Diego at a reasonable price. If you go to Orbitz, for example, near the bottom of the flight informaiton block on the first page is a section to expand options, one of which is multiple destinations.

No, I'm sorry - it's now illegal to drive from New Orleans to Orlando.

OK, just being silly. I've driven many times from Dallas to Orlando, making a 2 day trip out of it (Dallas to Pensacola the first day, then on down to Orlando the 2nd day). It's freeway all the way, and a not unpleasant drive. If you have the time and enjoy driving, go for it, with the understanding that it'll take at least a day each way. Let us know what you decide!

Well, there was a day or so a couple of weeks ago that you couldn't do it all on I-10 - if you were on I-10 going East (towards Orlando) from New Orleans, you HAD to go on I-59 North.

;)Ok, this was during Contraflow, but it WAS illegal to go that way! If you wanted to go to Orlando from New Orleans, you had to get off the interstate at the right point and go 'back' roads or U.S. Highways.

I guess with the OP's trip happening next summer, I assumed that all the Ike stuff will have been worked out by then!

Well, it was Gustav, (we weren't under mandatory evac or Contraflow for Ike), but it's 'fixed' now!

So, after reading your replies, talking to a friend of mine in Orlando and talking it over with my Husband, we have decided WDW 2010!:D

We feel when we go to New Orleans, we want to focus on New Orleans, and since 10 hours is a pretty long drive, we really don't have the time to do it.

Instead we will look to the future, and plan a kick-butt family trip for 2010, so as it draws closer I will pay lots of attention to this side of the board and gather lots of hints, tips and suggestions...I would really like to incorporate the shorter Disney cruise into our trip...
