View Full Version : How is it in the rain?
weimekela109 09-11-2008, 04:02 PM I am so excited I can hardly sleep! Leaving for WDW on Sunday morning:)
Well, I did a weather check for Orlando, and it looks like rain. No Hurricane, thank goodness, but it says;
Sun, Mon, Tues: Isolated t-storms
Weds, thurs: Scattered t-storms.
I cant recall the rest.
So, my question is..how many of you have done the "world" in the rain? Any tips? Will it be miserable?
Thanks in advance from a big ole' worrier!
GusMan 09-11-2008, 05:24 PM Here is my take.... be prepared for it to rain at least every day.
That is not too much of an exaggeration during some parts of the year.
(Really, its not all that bad, but there appears to be a lot of tropical activity which will impact the weather in central FL.)
The best thing to do is to have a poncho handy and just keep on touring. It may rain hard at times, but we never let it slow us down. The park will remain open but some outdoor attractions will close due to heavy rain and/or lightning.
Others may have some tips on how to weather the weather. :)
monoman 09-11-2008, 06:41 PM Well, isolated thunderstorms usually means 1 or 2 short storms in the afternoon. Do you go back to your resort in mid-afternoon to rest? If you do, you will probably be at the hotel during the thunderstorm.
Scattered can mean anything, so its hard to give any advise there. But either way, rain will not ruin your parade! Just be prepared for it and plan to do something indoors when you think rain is on the way.
No matter the rain, I know you will enjoy your trip! Have fun
Tinkermommy 09-11-2008, 07:27 PM I agree with everyone; prepare for rain, and be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't come.
We were there in late Sept. last year, and it rained nearly every day; some days, very hard. Although I don't care for rain ponchos, I ended up buying them at WDW and found them very useful. You can buy them for less someplace like WalMart before you go, and just throw them away at the end of your trip. I also used ziplock baggies for some things, like my camera, that I worried would get too wet through my bag.
We're from California, and found the humidity much more uncomfortable than the rain!
garethanders 09-12-2008, 04:26 AM As everyone has said do be prepared for the rain, have a poncho to hand, but from my experience of the world, you could practically predict the thunder storms. during our visit in 2004 2-3pm everyday, then in 2007 4-5pm everyday this was in august.
If you can see a pattern maybe an idea to do some indoor attrations like stitch, or laugh floor.
One thing is at least the rain is warm so can be nice to help you cool down a little.
danyoung 09-12-2008, 06:02 AM Florida rainstorms are almost always short in duration - like 20 to 30 minutes or so. If it starts to rain, find a nice covered place to hang out and wait it out. Most people run screaming for the exits when it starts to rain. If you can be patient, you'll find that you'll have the park all to yourself in a few minutes. And once the sun peeks out again you'll have pretty nice (albeit humid) weather to park storm in.
On those occasions when it really comes down hard, get a poncho or an umbrella - they're available at many stores in the parks - and keep on touring. Once you decide that you're not really going to stay dry anyway, all kinds of possibilities seem to open up for fun in the rain!
Drince88 09-12-2008, 06:07 AM If you can see a pattern maybe an idea to do some indoor attrations like stitch, or laugh floor.
Laugh Floor might be acceptable for a 'get out of rain' but I would recommend getting drenched to the skin and staying that way over going to Stitch!
Another thing to think about is having a second pair of 'walking in the park' shoes if you're going at a time where there are potentially daily thunderstorms/rain showers. Some shoes don't dry out too well over night, and the idea of putting my feet into wet shoes in the morning is almost as bad as sitting through Stitch again!
GusMan 09-12-2008, 06:15 AM But either way, rain will not ruin your parade! Although... it can cancel the parade, if the timing is right. :)

Very good advice to avoid wet feet - and Stitch! :)
Greg in TN 09-12-2008, 06:18 AM Last September, I was down there & went to the MK one morning when it was seriously raining--I'm not talking about scattered afternoon thundershowers, but a real front moving through. I just kept my poncho handy, and kept going. The Big Thunder Mtn CMs were telling people that in the rain, it was kinda like riding BTMRR & Splash all at the same time--not quite, but it did add a bit to the experience. The rain kept the crowds way down, and after the rain moved away (about noon), it was a BEAUTIFUL day. The folks who waited to come to the park until after the rain stopped had pretty long lines the rest of the day, but I'd already ridden all the headliners multiple times, and was able to really pick & choose what I did from then on. Everything considered, it was prob'ly one of the best times I've had at a park. :)
njtravelerof6 09-12-2008, 08:02 AM Also, "scattered" can mean literally "here and there". In early August, we had many times when driving when we came upon an area where it clearly had rained hard (portion of roadway was covered in puddles and still wet) or grass areas which were soaking wet. Or, when driving, we could see in the distance, areas which were getting drenched. Guess we were lucky because we kept "dodging" the raindrops. :)
tappenfeat 09-12-2008, 11:18 AM Here's a question:
Do you have small children where you will be bringing a stroller or renting one?
If you are...in that case...purchase some ponchos as mentioned above and when you go into a ride or show...raining or not, cover your stroller with a poncho.
You may come back and if it rained while you were on a ride/show...lil baby will have a dry stroller and all will be happy!
danyoung 09-14-2008, 04:58 AM Laugh Floor might be acceptable for a 'get out of rain' but I would recommend getting drenched to the skin and staying that way over going to Stitch!
Really? Why is Stitch that bad for you? It's not one of the greatest attractions ever, but it's not totally avoid-it-at-all-costs horrible for me.

I have to agree w/Drince. I can't think of ANYTHING that would drive me back into Stitch again. I just hope they put something decent in that location SOON ...
tappenfeat 09-14-2008, 01:24 PM Chiming in here: I've been on Stitch once and was not impressed with it. Haven't been back on it since...and that's saying a lot....since it doesn't take much to amuse me! LOL!!! :fez:
Drince88 09-15-2008, 05:06 AM Really? Why is Stitch that bad for you? It's not one of the greatest attractions ever, but it's not totally avoid-it-at-all-costs horrible for me.
About the only redeeming quality of the attraction to me is the Stitch AA, which IS great - and the pre-show is amusing. Part of my severe aversion is the way they 'sort of' replaced Alien Encounter to make it more 'friendly' to the kiddos - and yet it's not friendly enough for most of the kids that were too young enough for it before.
I REALLY liked Alien Encounter. If they'd totally replaced it (ala Pooh replacing Mr. Toad) I'd probably not have as severe a reaction.
And the Chilli Dog really bothers me.
danyoung 09-15-2008, 08:24 AM Cathy, I don't disagree with anything you said. I usually try to hit just about every attraction on every trip, but if I missed Stitch it'd be no big deal. I like it up to a point (those laser cannons are very cool technology!). But then it just becomes chaotic, with Stitch jumping around the room getting shot at, power going out, power coming back on and shots fired, power going off . . . it's simply a bad story from that point on.
Ohthatjeff 09-15-2008, 12:03 PM Um, wet?
Seriously, mid-day storms tend to be short. Just get in a covered line for an indoor ride or show. By the time the ride/show is over, it's likely stopped raining.
Re: Stich - Went into Alien Encounter once. I have no desire to go into anything that annoying ever again, no matter what the theming.
scoobydooby 09-15-2008, 02:52 PM Really good for touring if you still get to the gates before opening a couple of days into a very wet spell! (Honestly - bit miserable after 4 days but it took that long to get to us and then the sun came out) :)
Back home and now just a memory from 3+ weeks ago. The children remember riding Big Thunder Mountain 5 times in a loop with no line; they remember riding Toy Story Mania 4 times with no line.
At the time we were all drenched.
Now they just remember the fun, not that it was raining.
You won't melt. Storm the parks!
WDW heart 09-16-2008, 05:05 AM Please don't let the weather reports dictate your plans. I swear I think every day in Orlando is calling for isolated thunderstorms. We just packed our ponchos and went on with our day. A pair of water shoes would be handy too. Especially for some of the water rides.
