We're staying at FW for the first time and I thought I would get some thoughts on internal bus/bus to park system. Any other thoughts or advice on FW would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know about FW in particular with regard to the buses. But we stayed at the POFQ this last March and use the buses to get around. As I recall the longest we waited for a bus as about 30 minutes, but normally was about 10 to 15, and I don't remember it taking more that 20 to get to any one of the parks.
Hope this helps.

Fort Wilderness Resort? Or the Fort Wilderness Campground and Cabins? That makes a bit difference as far as the bus systems go.

pssst, mdrausch - "Fort Wilderness Resort" IS the Campground and Cabins, and Wilderness Lodge is the Deluxe resort (plus there's Wilderness Lodge Villas - the DVC side).

Hi!
My family loves FW and the Cabins and the bus system is really not too bad. . .it may take you a day to get it down pat but its not so bad.
There are 3 main routes, orange, purple and yellow.
Purple and yellow only go to the cabins and campgrounds . . . (purple does the cabins i believe and yellow the campgrounds) they start and finish at the two "ends" (the stops that you can pick up buses to the parks or go to the settlement where the hoop de doo is - or the ferry for MK)
the orange is the one that goes through the center of FW and stops at both bus stops as well as both "trading posts" where you can buy food and goodies.
just learn what color to take to your campsite, and youre really set. :)
i like it. they used to be chip and dale buses (instead of the colors) and i think that was harder to remember which went where (isn't it hard enough to remember which chipmunk is which sometimes? :P)
The other thing you should know is which end goes to which parks.
The Settlement Depot (where the Hoop de Doo is, one of the trading posts, crockets tavern and Trails End Buffet. . .) you can catch a bus (or a boat) to . . .
The MK,
a different boat to the contemporary or wilderness lodge resorts.
The Outpost Depot (on the same end where you check in) . . . you can take a bus to . . .
Epcot, Animal Kingdom/ Blizzard Beach, Disney Hollywood Studios (known as MGM), Typhoon Lagoon/ DTD

Thanks Doodle. Do you know how often the iternal buses run? I'm trying to get an idea of about how much time it will take to get to the parks.

pssst, mdrausch -
You're so polite in your corrections! I usually say something like "HEY BEETHEAD - YOU GOT THAT WRONG!!!" Actually, your way is much better. . .

Oh, if it was something that nobody else got confused on, I'm much more inclined to use your approach, Dan - but the resort names with Wilderness in them cause people a lot of confusion, so I figure I should be nicer then!

I've always thought it's kinda dumb the way Disney uses similar names for different properties, like Fort Wilderness / Wilderness Lodge. Seems like there are other examples, but I can't come up with them at the moment.

Oops. Sorry =).
When we stayed at the cabins, we rented a golf cart. They are quite pricey (and you need to reserve them pretty early) but we enjoyed the freedom they afforded us.
Just another option.

Animal Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom ;)
And the fact that DL for years was referred to as the Magic Kingdom. What do they call their very next park? Yup - the Magic Kingdom. Confusing!

ANYTIME :)
They tend to run fairly quickly, it depends on the day and how many people are at each area (clearly) i'd say every 5 minutes? Sometimes we walk to the bus stop (for the theme parks) its not that far (depending on where you are) and a nice stroll. . . .

Mark's blog reminded me of the big one that gets people - Disney Dining Experience, Disney Dining Plan. To solve that, Disney is changing the DDE to "Tables in Wonderland"

YES! That's the other big one I couldn't remember. I think it's just stupid that they bowed to a few whackos and dropped the charming Dixie Landings name. And even if they did have to do this, the whole concept of taking 2 separate properties and naming them the same but keeping them different while seeming to be two parts of one place --- it's simply mind boggling to me!

haha I concur! its always tough when we're picking a place to stay and we're looking at the options to remember they ARE separate properties!

nevermind that. . .when you first start posting on boards such as this one, and you are trying to learn all the acronyms and such, its a bit mind boggling since all these disney items have similiar names and THUS similair acronyms and nicknames!

DMB, it really bothers me when someone comes on and says that they're new to both the online world and to Disney World, and they need advice on where to stay, and someone will post "Hey, you could spend a lot and go to the CR or the GF or even the Y&B, but we like saving and staying at CSR or POR". I mean, how in the frak can a newbie sort through gibberish like that???

What's the story with the few whackos? I always wondered why they changed the name.....

Well, I don't have a documented story to tell. But from what I understand the term "dixie" has some negative connotations in the south, and some of them complained about the name Dixie Landings, saying it was racist or some such nonsense. And Disney caved to the pressure. At least that's what I heard.

Hmmm....Just like "Song of the South"? I can't find that flick anywhere! I'm sitting here humming "Dixie Land" and thinking of dixie land music. That's weird. Not that I'm discounting the story--it's probably accurate. They should've just renamed it completely and not attached it to Port Orleans.

Ok -- I'll just keep us all way off topic ;)
Tina sometimes you can find Song of the South on ebay. My sister got me a copy for my birthday. I think it actually came from China though, obviously a bootleg. Nobody needs to flame me, I know bootlegs are bad, but since Disney just won't release it I'm letting the guilt go and enjoying having a copy. She gave it to me along with a Splash Mountain ride poster :D My sister knows me well!
I miss Dixie Landings too, still have my old resort mug. I always assumed Dan's reasoning was also the culprit, though never heard anything official.
