We always have the kids' boarding passes though. candles71 09-04-2008, 08:34 PM We have not been asked for ID for our kids. That being said we always had their school id's or birth certificate just in case. tchatters 09-06-2008, 08:01 AM One note- if your kids are travelling with another family you may need ID if they are over 12! I fly with students all the time and we are told this every time we travel. Maybe once have they actually asket but it's good to know. You can use a school ID or in California, the DMV will issue a state ID card for kids as well. Gilesmt 09-07-2008, 08:47 AM Technically they do not have to have ID but they are suppose to have proof of age, so I always carry a birth certificate and when we went to WDW in Feb/Mar this year we were asked for proof of age/citizenship for both the girls, age 3 and 17. They wanted to know why the 17 year old did not have a drivers license or a permit and I had to explain that I would not let her have one until she was old enough to pay the insurance, which is a rule in our home. For the 3 year old, I had to also provide the note from mom that I grandma had permission to travel with her. The good part of having the birth certificate and the immunization records was that they did not question us at our home airport but at Orlando. If I had not had these I am not sure what would have happened, since we were returning from a 11 day trip. So as side, you can go into your State DOL and get a state ID card, from there birth certificate, which is what we now have, that way you are not carrying around a birth certificate. They cost from $3 to $10 here. Our state have them so we can cross into Canada with them which is great for us and the reason I got them. School ID's also work if your kids go to school and I am told that if your children are home schooled you can ask at the begining of a school year, right now at the district office and they will give you one, but the child has to have there picture taken when the rest of the pictures are being taken at that school. mom22gls 09-07-2008, 09:15 AM Assuming you are traveling domestically, there is no document or ID requirement. If I was traveling with someone else's child I would have some sort of permission from the parent. I have flown with my kids many times, sometimes without my husband, and have never been questioned, although they don't look at all like me. I have heard of rare instances when parents have been questioned, if their children are of a different race. This may be the case where children were adopted, or are biracial. It's never happened to me, but my kids are old enough to communicate for themselves, and they, obviously, act like we are all family. mkraemer 09-25-2008, 09:08 PM I always travel with my passport because I find it easier to use that when I need to produce identification than dig through my purse for my wallet. I also take my children's passports with me because, these days, you never know when the rules of travel might suddenly change...or we might win the lottery and decide to celebrate in London. :) If you travel outside the United States with your children, and the other parent is not traveling with you, you should have a notarized letter from that parent that indicates they know you are traveling with the children and you have their permission to do so. The last time I went to Canada with my children, the border guard required this letter (my husband was at home), even though I was driving my own minivan. |
