1. A REMARKABLE AMBASSADOR

The albatross is a legendary bird. Mariners believe it's a harbinger
of good luck. To harm or kill one brings certain misfortune.

Today, thousands of albatross die each year in longline fishing gear
and from plastics pollution on the high seas. We've found a way to
tell that story in a compelling fashion.

Makana (her name means "gift" in Hawaiian) is a Laysan albatross,
injured as a chick. Because she couldn't return to the wild, we gave
her a home and soon introduced her to visitors in a daily public
program. She puts a face on abstract threats facing albatross and
their kin. When visitors see a plastic tube of debris taken from the
carcass of a Laysan chick, the impact is powerful.

Learn Makana's story in our new online interactive. In it, you'll
find a special section where you can tell us what you're doing to
use less plastic. Please tell us your story so that we can share
your good ideas!
