we're still trying to get a good deal on a room for early aug. wondering if anyone has used priceline to get a room in the disneyland area I was going to bid on a 3* hotel but was wondering if anyone else had done the same, and what was the hotel you got?

I suggest you only bid on three star or above and wait until the week before you want to go. There is a list you can find is you search for "bidding for travel" that will give you their hotel lists and winning bids.

I've used it several times and I've always gotten the Hyatt Regency Orange County - except for our trip next week I used it again and we're staying at the DoubleTree Hotel - kind of far, but they have a free shuttle and it gets good reviews. I'll post when we get back to let everyone know how it was.

The bidding for travel website is a good one.
I actually bid on a 1* - got Extended stay on W. Katella - a bit far but there's a city bus to get down to Katella and Harbor (short bus ride too) - and it runs early and late - so even when the park is open until midnight, we can still get a bus there and back! For six nights - we paid right around $220 - with all the taxes - that's roughly $37/night! And this trip has to be CHEAP for us. We would have paid just about that $220 just for two nights right there on Harbor blvd.
Cool thing about this place - there's a full fridge/freezer, a stove, microwave, plus utensils! We are going toward the end of July, so the park will be open 8am-Midnight...we plan to come back to the hotel for lunch/nap time, then have dinner in the room before we go back to the park in the evening...having the kitchen is going to save a lot of money!!
The first four nights we got with bids of $30/night and the last two we got with bids of $28/night.
I am not a hotel snob at all - as long as I have a place to sleep, we're good to go. Others are and would probably be appalled to stay in a place like this...but it has fairly decent reviews on tripadvisor.
Hope that helps some.

I've used Priceline twice before. The first time we got the Doubletree in Orange, the second time we got the Hyatt.
We actually like the Doubletree better, even though it is further away, the shuttle service was good. Their is a Starbucks right across the street, and a good restaraunt in the hotel.
The only thing I didn't like about it was if the shuttle didn't come or was late, your we're stranded. I like being in walking distance in that case.
We got the room for $50.00 a night. I was well worth it, it also sits right in the parking lot of the Block at Orange. Lots of shops and restaraunts there.
Have Fun!

Make sure you bring dishwashing soap, TP, regular soap, etc... Extended Stays don't provide daily service, so if you need towels mid week, you will need to go to the front desk and ask (I think its a $5 charge.) They don't change TP, you need to bring it. Just a heads up.

I use Priceline frequently for last minute, spur of the moment trips. I never bid on anything less than 3 stars. I have stayed at the Hyatt, Crown Plaza, Marriott Suites and Doubletree.
I like all of the above hotels for what the trip is meant for--but my favorite is the Hyatt!

Those are the hotels I have always gotten, too. I have never paid more than 40 dollars a night, even the week after Christmas. The shuttles are all great, too! I know there is a site that tells which hotels are offered, and how much people are winning them for, but I can't remember the name (something about bidding).

Just remember--priceline is a gamble. I thought I'd get one of those mentioned in this thread, but the two times I've used it in the past year I ended up with the Hilton (Dec. 2007) and the Holiday Inn Anaheim Resort (Feb. 2008). That doesn't mean I wouldn't gamble for the right price, just remember it might not be the Hyatt, Crowne Plaza, or Doubletree.

Also remember, they only guarantee bedding for 2. If you are traveling with a family, there is a chance you will wind up with a king bed room, especially during a sold out time frame.

That is why I won't go below three stars and risk being somewhere my family would hate. I always request two rooms so we usually end up having enough beds.
The other thing to keep in mind when placing your bid is how much it is going to cost you for breakfast and parking. Hyatt Regency charges about $12 I think but has a free shuttle bus. The Anaheim Hilton charges $15 for parking and you are within walking distance or can buy ART tickets.
So I look at what it will cost me to stay somewhere nice like Homewood, usually around $170 a night and then deduct the cost of breakfast and parking from that amount. Then I divide that in two and bid less than fifty dollars a room. If I can get two rooms for that price then I am good.
This past spring break I got two rooms at the Anaheim Hilton and loved it. They put us in a King room with an adjoining suite with wetbar and Disney View. It was the nicest stay I have ever had in the DLR area. It is the only time we have ever had a view and that really made for a great stay. They sent up a rollaway and crib for free. The suite already had a sofa and murphy bed so we were good as far as beds and space go. The wetbar made up for not having a kitchenette.

Our stay at the DoubleTree was very good. The shuttles run every hour and then later at night they are every half hour. Cookies are yummy. Beds are yummy. The only real issue we had was that the room has no ventilation and no bathroom fan so it was really damp and humid. The windows have little venting strips in the window frame, but that was it - there were 4 of us, so after 4 showers a day (trying to remember to keep the bathroom door closed at all times to try to keep the dampness confined) and swimsuits hanging to dry I would wake up sweaty a few times a night even though we kept the room pretty cool. It wasn't bad enough that I'd avoid the place though, everything else was very nice.

I have stayed many times at the Crowne Plaza and always have enjoyed it. Great rooms and staff plus its just a couple of blocks from the main gate (about 2.6 miles). They have a free shuttle (but we usually drive over to Disneyland). Another great reason we also stay hear every time is a friend of ours has a cousin that works at the hotel at gets us a friends & family discount which can save a lot of cash over the course of a couple of days:D.
